The Way We Live Now? Woman Live Tweets Her Abortion
Angie Jackson, known online as Angie the Anti-theist, pushed the abortion debate–and Twitter–to a new level of transparency when she live-tweeted her abortion earlier this week.
Citing a desire to “demystify abortions for other women,” the 27-year-old created a YouTube video right after she took the RU-486 pill. That’s right. She started her abortion on YouTube and continued live-tweeting as the pill did its business.
Time Out New York Pits Brooklyn Against Manhattan. Wut, Wut!!
Inspired by legions of letters from angry Manhattanites who felt the mag was going too Brooklyn, Time Out New York has addressed the Brooklyn vs. Manhattan debate head-on, with a series of 11 articles pitting the boroughs against one another. There’s a quiz, an editor debate, a hypothetical tome on what would happen if every bridge was destroyed, highlights from each hood, statistics and even a slide-show that lets you judge where people are from based on the way they look. Judgers unite!
Tim Geithner the Man, the Mystery, the Secretary of the Treasury
In the March issue of Vogue, contributing editor Rebecca Johnson snagged an interview with Timothy Geithner, Secretary of Treasury. Perhaps it seems ironic–even wrong–to place “the man responsible for crafting much of the bailout” next to a $5,000 Prada bag, but Johnson’s article provides a refreshing, humanizing peek into Geithner’s life. Not just his closet.
NYU Partners With NY Times for Hyperlocal East Village Blog
Earlier this month, Gothamist founder Jake Dobkin went nuclear on the New York Times for its lack of innovation and abominable failure in the Metro space, calling Cityroom “a fairly lazy and sleep-inducing ripoff of Gothamist.”
How ironic, then, that just yesterday, the Times announced that it has partnered with NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute to create The Local: East Village, a hyperlocal blog that will be produced by NYU and published on the Times’ site. It’s like they could tell the future!
Spankin’ New HuffPo College Offers a Peek at Journalism’s Rising Stars
Today, the Huffington Post welcomed the newest member of their family, HuffPo College. Lead by Jose Antonio Vargas and Leah Finnigan, HuffPo College pulls its content from 62 student publications around the country and cross-posts from other articles on the site. A bit obvious, but it serves the section well; drawing from student papers offers an almost-exclusive peek into our nation’s universities, informing us, for example, that UC Berkley has a Quidditch league.

Citizen Journalists Win Polk Award for Footage of Neda Agha-Soltan
Yesterday, Long Island University announced the winners of the 2009 George Polk Award, an annual honor for excellence in journalism. And in addition to the regular heavy-hitters, they also recognized the anonymous men and women that filmed the death of Iranian protester Neda Agha-Soltan. This marks the first time that citizen journalists have received such a traditional, industry-recognized honor. And as a result, it’s a really freaking big deal.

Who’s More Powerful: Glenn Beck or Bill O’Reilly?
We here at Mediaite spend our days wondering about life’s greatest mysteries. But much more importantly, we wonder which of our beloved media personalities wields the most power. Our Power Grid does an excellent job of ranking, cataloging and categorizing the personalities, but sometimes, the finer nuances of influence and change need a human touch.
Jersey Shore Girls Get a Makeunder on Rachael Ray
The fashion rules at the Jersey Shore are scant and easy: leopard, leather, rips and studs are always in vogue. Bigger poufs are better poufs. Skirts and shorts must be small enough to display the lower curve of the derriere, push-up bras are mandatory (plus five if it has a matching g-string from Frederick’s of Hollywood), and if boobs and/or vagina do not escape at some point during the night, then we have a major fashion situation.

Interview Magazine’s iPad App Would Make Warhol Proud
Though digital magazines were conspicuously missing at the iPad’s debut, Interview, according to the HuffPo, previewed its digital brethren last night at its 40th anniversary party at the Hudson Hotel’s Good Units. The Factory would be proud on so many levels, except that the video was not made available in any viral form. Ew.
Demand Studios Produces Millions of Articles, Thousands of Poor Writers
In today’s Media Equation column in the New York Times, David Carr tackles Demand Studios, the content creation behemoth behind sites like eHow, Livestrong, and a hefty chunk of the videos on YouTube. They are a new breed of media company, a self-identified “Social Publishing Ecosystem for leading digital brands.” And they’re swiftly dominating the Internet.

Vanity Fair Hollywood Issue Lacks Both Color And Newness
In case you haven’t heard, this year’s Vanity Fair Hollywood issue is extremely monochromatic; nary one person of color made the cover. But something else VF staffers failed to note? Two of the actresses in their “New Decade: New Holly” article were featured in 2008 as “Hollywood’s New Wave.” Guess they are still up-and-coming?
Is Conde Nast Pitting Its Employees Against One Another?
Last fall, a hacker broke into Conde Nast’s computer system, flinging early copies of GQ, Vogue and other publications all over the Internet. To prevent further breaches of trust and budget, Conde set up the Fraud Reporting Hotline. According to the memo sent by Chief Financial Officer John Bellando, employees are encouraged to turn in anyone guilty of “release of proprietary information, accounting/audit irregularities, falsification of company records, theft of goods/services/cash,” and “unauthorized discounts/payoffs.”

Is Norm Pearlstine Poaching Staffers From Former Employer, Time Inc.?
Since Norman Pearlstine, former Editor-in-Chief of Time Inc., joined Bloomberg as Chief Content Officer, many of the staffers at Timehave slowly been trickling over to join him. First, it was Josh Tyrangiel, who now serves as BusinessWeek’s Editor in Chief. Then, it was Arthur Hochstein, Time’s “legendary” art director, who stepped down in 2009 and will now be consulting for both BusinessWeek and Time. Who else is planning to “reunite” with Pearlstine?

NPR President Vivian Schiller Responds To NYT Paywall Announcement
Last week, Vivian Schiller, CEO and President of NPR, offered the Daily Beast her opinion on the New York Times’ recently announced pay wall. Basically, she applauds their efforts and really isn’t sure whether or not it will work.
