MTV And The Curated ME: What’s Changing For ‘Millennials’ Is Changing For All Of Us

Girls playing with cell phones Original Filename: kids texting.jpg video

Well, kids these days. It’s easy to write of the changes in the digital world as the result of behavior that is relegated to the age of adolescents and young adulthood.

But that’s wrong – very wrong.

What’s changing for young people is changing for all of us. How we connect, how we share. How we present our digital selves.

NBC’s Wayback Machine is Broken

Today Show

It was one of those moments that made you smile.

Last week, a piece of footage arrived on the net. It could only be described as nostalgic. It was an episode of the Today Show from 1994 – with hosts Bryant Gumble and Katie Couric puzzeling over this thing called – ‘internet’.

It was – without a doubt – charming.

King George VI Vs. Mark Zuckerberg

George Zuck

For months it seemed as if The Social Network was the odds on favorite to win an Oscar for Best Picture this year. The buzz was great, Facebook is the meme of the moment and ticket sales were staggering. Then, something changed. Now it’s a horse race with The King’s Speech now neck in neck with The Social Network to nab this years biggest prize in filmmaking.

How did that happen, and why?

Why The Mainstream Media Gets the WTC Project Wrong

PastedGraphic-1

Last February, 60 Minutes broadcast a story which was certain to make any American angry. They said that almost 9 years after the attacks on the World Trade Center, the site was still an empty pit. They showed video of a massive, empty construction site. A huge gaping wound in lower Manhattan. There was only one problem with the story. It wasn’t true.

Sharon Waxman Explains Her Problem With Michael Wolff’s Newser

wolfe_waxman video

Michael Wolff’s Newser.com is an aggregator of news from around the web. Sharon Waxman is the Founder and Editor of The Wrap. In an interview with CurationNation.org, Wolff responded to the then rhetorical question about what he’d do if Rupert Murdoch sent a cease and desist letter regarding content from the NY Post or the WSJ. Wolff’s response was that Murdoch would be on shaky legal ground. Well, now he may get his chance to find that out – as yesterday Waxman sent a cease and desist to Newser regarding content from The Wrap. In the following interview Waxman explains her take on the line between curation and plagiarism and why she feels Newser crosses the line.

Who’s Embedded With Whom? Videos Will Be Everywhere – or Invisible

SteveRosenbaum_web

Embedding videos on sites other than the ones where they’re initially posted is a widespread – and still growing – Internet trend, so much so that at least one person in the know predicts 2010 will be “The Year of the Video Embed.” Still, some content providers (especially record labels) are resisting the trend – and if they keep it up, they’ll get left behind by those who embrace it.

Why Critics Of NBC Have It All Wrong

nbc-logo

The New York Times, in its cover story, has a hell of a good time painting Jeff Zucker into a corner. But even if Zucker is wearing the black hat in all this, the blame for NBC’s predicament goes back to the GE management, and a fundamental lack of understanding of the evolution of the media business. For NBC, a little thing called cable may have played a part.

Reality TV Goes Too Far: WH Gate Crashers’ Unnamed Co-Conspirators

I’ve been reading and re-reading the story of the “crashers” and all of the related stories about Reality TV, and something just isn’t right. While the couple is described as auditioning for a Bravo TV series, and Bravo goes out of their way to say that, there won’t be final casting decision for “months”. But in my experience, t Shat just isn’t how Reality TV works.

First, a bit of history.

Curation. Crowd Sourcing. And Sexy Aliens.

You may have noticed that lots of the folks that make media for a living are pretty unhappy these days.

If you listen to Craig Newmark, the king of digital classifieds and the namesake of the now ubiquitous Craigs List – the newspaper folks he’s talked to don’t blame him for the demise of the newspaper business. It’s cool.
