Prez and the Evolution: President Obama Comes Out For Gay Marriage To Robin Roberts

obama video

On the heels of Vice President Joe Biden‘s alleged rogue-going on gay marriage, and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan‘s actual expression of support for marriage equality, President Obama has completed his long-awaited “evolution” on gay marriage by expressing support for marriage equality in an interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts. Although the apparent result of intense media pressure, marriage equality advocates likely don’t care how he got here, just that he got here.

Former MI Gov. Blasts Romney Who ‘Knifed Us In The Back’ For Taking Auto Rescue Credit

jen video

Former Massachusetts Governor and presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney touched off a firestorm of derision when he said he would “take a lot of credit” for the rescue of the auto industry, which he famously opposed. While much of the reaction has been a mixture of amazement and amusement, former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, who was in office when Romney said “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt,” was decidedly not amused.

RNC Furiously Walks Back Romney ‘Still Deciding What His Position On Immigration Is’

inclan

The Republican National Committee is trying to erase a gaffe, by one of its spokespersons, that highlights former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney’s famous hardness-to-pin-down. Asked a question about alienated Hispanic voters, RNC Hispanic Outreach Director Bettina Inclán told reporters that “As a candidate, to my understanding, he’s still deciding what his position on immigration is.”

RNC spokeswoman Kirsten Kukowski walked that back quicker than a meth-addicted mime doing a tribute to Michael Jackson, telling reporters “We never said the governor is still deciding on immigration. I want to make sure we are exponentially clear.”

Fox News’ Eric Bolling Credits President Obama With Lowering Gas Prices!

bolling_board_3.16.12

Recently, I’ve done some reporting on an apparent correlation between President Obama‘s speech about oil speculators and a now-sixteen cent per gallon drop in gas prices. Eric Bolling, host of Fox News’ The Five and not the biggest fan of the Whizzite Hizzouse’s current occupant, shockingly has gone farther than I did, actually drawing a causal link between the President’s actions and the falling price of gas.

Did Jake Tapper Get Jay Carney To ‘Make News’ On Gay Marriage?

carney video

On the heels of Vice President Joe Biden‘s alleged rogue-going on gay marriage, and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan‘s actual expression of support for marriage equality, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney parried another round of heated questioning on the President’s “evolution.”

Carney and his predecessor have consistently expressed a reluctance to “make news” on the subject, but ABC News’ Jake Tapper may have shaken something loose.

Writer Of Nixed Obama SNL Sketch: ‘I Don’t Have A Hard-On For Obama!’

downey Exclusive

Earlier today, we reported on The Daily Caller‘s publication of a script for a Saturday Night Live sketch that was scratched from this weekend’s show, a post that carried the heavy implication that the decision was politically motivated. Since then, we’ve contacted the writer of that sketch, Jim Downey, who tells us that he actually sent the script to Daily Caller publisher Tucker Carlson prior to Saturday’s show, and insists there were no politics behind the decision to scratch the bit.

Mitt Romney Stands Mute As Supporter Says Obama Should Be Tried For Treason

treason Video

In yet another example of his inability to show some spine where the extreme elements of his supporters are concerned, presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney said nothing today when a supporter at an Ohio campaign event suggested that President Obama should be put on trial for his life. According to Buzzfeed‘s Zeke Miller, Romney completely glossed over a supporter who said “”I do believe (President Obama) should be tried for treason.”

The Young Turks’ Ana Kasparian ‘Distracted’ By Fox News Host’s Legs

ana video

Ana Kasparian, co-host of The Young Turks, apparently suffers from an all-too-common malady: Fox News Legs Syndrome. During a segment on Friday’s web-0nly portion of the Current TV hit featuring Bob Beckel playing pot/kettle with Joy Behar‘s looks, Kasparian confessed that The Five co-host Kimberly Guilfoyle‘s legs were “distracting” to her, a condition which host Cenk Uygur noted is common among Fox News viewers.

Buzzfeed Dredges Up Mitt Romney’s 1981 Disorderly Persons Arrest

boat

Buzzfeed‘s Andrew Kaczynski continued his site’s curation of the Mitt Romney Awkward Moment Museum today by posting an account of the presumptive GOP nominee’s  ”little reported” disorderly persons arrest from 1981. We actually did report on that incident in November, but Kaczynski is right, the mainstream media has so far ignored that arrest, as well as the other incident we reported on then: Romney’s altercation with a volunteer traffic cop at the Winter Olympics.

Gas Prices Fall 14 Cents Per Gallon Since President Obama Announced Speculation Crackdown

gas-pump11-316x252

On Friday, we reported that gas prices had tumbled from an early-April peak of $3.93 per gallon to a $3.80 per gallon national average. Since then, the national average has fallen another few cents, but the media who happily bantered about the political consequences of rising gas prices on President Obama‘s reelection prospects have, thus far, remained silent about this drop, which coincides exactly with the President’s remarks about reining in oil speculators.

Yanked Obama-Slamming SNL Script Leaked To Conservative Daily Caller

fred video

This week’s Saturday Night Live cold-open featured a parody of Fox News’ morning infotainment offering Fox and Friends, but according to Tucker Carlson‘s Daily Caller, that wasn’t always the plan. Someone leaked a script for an alternate opener, in which Fred Armisen‘s President Obama addresses the nation about the anniversary of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. Although The DC says it’s “unclear” why the sketch was cut, leaking it to an anti-Obama website sends a pretty clear message: time for another round of election-year fine whine about the long-running comedy show.

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes Describes His ‘Unease’ With Celebrating Osama Bin Laden Killing

up video

On Saturday’s Up with Chris Hayes, eponymous host Chris Hayes discussed the “parfait of frustration” at this week’s discussion of the “politicization” of the Osama bin Laden killing. While he and his panel made proper mockery of Republican outrage (you only do a victory dance when you haven’t won, duh.), Hayes expressed a difficult-to-articulate “unease” with celebrating the terrorist leader’s killing, one which he eventually articulated very well.

Brass Ones: Romney Camp Brags About Denouncing Intolerance, But Not Of Gay Former Advisor

fehrnstrom-316x238 video

Presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney has taken a lot of criticism for failing to denounce the anti-gay voices that ostensibly drove openly gay advisor Richard Grenell to quit quit the campaign, Romney senior advisor Eric Fehrnstrom, appearing on Chuck Todd‘s The Daily Rundown, made a hilarious attempt to turn those lemons into lemonade by casting Romney as a warrior against intolerance.

White House Reporter Mark Knoller Gets Call From Starbucks VP After $50-Gate Tweets

Mark

If you need any more evidence of the power of social media, look no further than this. CBS Radio White House Correspondent Mark Knoller got a call from a Starbucks VP after a series of tweets in which he complained about a barrista who wouldn’t accept his fifty-dollar bill. According to Knoller, the executive offered an apology, but nothing much else. If Starbucks knows what’s good for them, they’ll shoot Knoller out some gift cards, or a couple pounds of Colombian Delight, or whatever they call their best coffee.

May The 4th Be With You: How To Celebrate Star Wars Day

swday

On CNN’s Starting Point this morning, I learned something incredibly important: Star Wars fans can, in fact, be bigger dorks. In a brief bit of headline fluff, anchor Christine Romans pointed out that today is International Star Wars Day, by virtue of the date’s pun-tasticness: May the 4th Be With You. Since I missed International Put Penicillin In Your Mayonnaise Day (or Dos de Mayo), I’m going to make the most of my newly-discovered holiday by advising my fellow padawons how to mark the occasion.

Gas Prices Fall 12 Cents Per Gallon Since President Obama Announced Speculation Crackdown

gas-pump1-316x252

The national media, especially Fox News, were quick to report that the sky was falling when Republicans tried to make rising gasoline prices a political liability for President Obama. The conversation dominated political news for weeks, as the national average gasoline price peaked at about $3.93 per gallon. Since President Obama “waved the tar baby” of oil speculation on April 17, though, gas prices have fallen from a national average of about $3.92 on April 16, to about $3.80 per gallon today, and are expected to plunge below $3.50 by July.

Jennifer Granholm Blasts ‘Hollow Man’ Mitt Romney Over Failure To Stand Up For Gay Advisor

jen' video

On Thursday night’s edition of Current TV’s The War Room, host and former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm slammed presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney for failing to stand up to anti-gay conservatives who she says “bullied” openly gay Richard Grenell into resigning as a Romney foreign policy advisor. Granholm cast Romney’s silence as the latest in a series of missed opportunities to show leadership, and to stand up for his principles in spite of the potential political cost.

April Jobs Report: Unemployment Inches Down But Fewer Jobs Added Than Expected

help_wanted_AJ_050312

The White House released a statement on April’s jobs report, which shows that the economy created 115,000 jobs in April, significantly less than the 165,000 that were estimated by economists, but which also showed the unemployment rate falling to 8.1% from 8.2%, and an upward revision of 35,000 to March’s jobs report. While the administration is putting the best possible face on these numbers, they failed to highlight the 12,000 public sector jobs lost, the continuing result of Republican spending cuts that have purged over 600,000 jobs.

Blogger R.S. McCain Burns Mitt Romney And About 30 Other Bloggers From Secret Meeting

rsm

This is why we can’t have nice things. Well, why you can’t have nice things, and by “you,” I mean the conservative blogosphere. Following the Mitt Romney campaign’s first-ever off-the-record meeting with about 60 conservative bloggers, mainly so they could complain about not being fed “scoops” by the campaign, that meeting’s attendees set about making sure it would be the last. The latest is Robert Stacy McCain, who has cleverly posted the names of every attendee the bourbon didn’t erase from his memory.

Politico Hypes ‘Dangerous New Obama Book’ While Decrying ‘Overheated And Overhyped’ Election

obama

Pioneering website Politico.com‘s propensity for self-propelled political news hype has become something of a running joke in the media the past few years, and their coverage of David Maraness‘ upcoming biography Barack Obama: The Story is a great example of their artistry. Yesterday, they caused a Drudge-fueled maelstrom with an “admission” that turned out to be old non-news, and today, they’re  eating themselves over the “dangerous” book that even they say “seems to be a nuanced, even sympathetic portrayal culled from people who still admire Obama.”

What’s the danger? Apparently, it’s that “it remains to be seen how his work will be received in an overheated, overhyped election year.”

Obama ‘Truth Team’ Calls Out Republican SuperPac ‘BS’

cutter video

In an email to supporters, Barack Obama‘s reelection campaign is pushing back against a huge ad buy by Koch-funded Americans for Prosperity with a video response from Deputy Campaign Manager Stephanie Cutter that adopts the informal presidential-campaign-next-door ethos that has become its hallmark. In the video, Cutter blasts the distortions and lies in the pro-Romney SuperPAC’s ad, and promises to “call their BS when we see it,” which is probably the first time I’ve heard those initials used in an official campaign communication.

NBC News Correspondent Fired Over A Second George Zimmerman 911 Tape Edit

lilialuciano

Last week, we reported that NBC Miami reporter Jeff Burnside became the second NBC producer to be fired over a misleading edit to Trayvon Martin killer George Zimmerman‘s 911 call that made it into several Today Show broadcasts. According to TV Newser, the internal NBC News investigation that resultd in Burnside’s dismissal also uncovered another edited Zimmerman tape, which hs resulted in the firing of Miami-based correspondent Lilia Luciano from the network.

Why, Lawrence, Why? Lawrence O’Donnell Attacks Ann Romney’s Expensive T-Shirt

lawrence video

In the final segment of Wednesday night’s The Last Word, host Lawrence O’Donnell bought himself a headache the size of a four-car elevator when he attacked the $990 t-shirt that presumptive Republican nominee for First Lady Ann Romney wore during an appearance with husband Mitt Romney on CBS This Morning. O’Donnell called the shirt “yet another example of how out of touch the Romney family can be with how 99% of Americans live,” adding, “it’s a really ugly t-shirt.”

Opposition To Marriage Equality Does Equal Bigotry

Will video

During a discussion of departed Mitt Romney campaign foreign policy advisor Richard Grenell on CNN’s Starting Point Wednesday morning, contributor and columnist for The Blaze Will Cain said something that got my attention. “For the sake of accuracy, let’s make clear,” he said, “this is not about Republicans or Mitt Romney’s campaign being unaccepting of gay people,” but rather, that vocal opponents of Grenell’s hiring “were opposed to his advocacy for same-sex marriage.”

New Scott Brown Ad Touts ‘Standing Next To President Obama’ To Pass Veterans Bill

brown video

Republican Senator Scott Brown (R-MA) has apparently joined his opponent Elizabeth Warren by featuring President Obama in a campaign ad, albeit not quite as prominently. NBC’s Kelly O’Donnell noticed this new Scott Brown radio ad in which he burnishes his bipartisan credentials, and calls “Standing with President Obama on the day he signed (Brown’s Veterans Jobs Bill) into law” as one of many “great experiences” he’s had as a freshman Senator.
