This video, released by both Alinea and Eleven Madison Park, is as mysterious and cello-filled as an art house psychological thriller, showing the brigades of both restaurants packing their entire services into boxes for no apparent reason. Actually, make that their entire restaurants: chairs, art, liquid nitrogen tanks; even Grant Achatz and his sous chef Matt Chasseur packed themselves up in shipping boxes.
We’re stumped as to what they’re doing. The Chicago Tribune notes that the title, “21st Century Limited,” refers to the passenger train that once ran between Chicago and New York City (there’s also that image of the brigades carrying their restaurants through Grand Central Station and Union Station). Adding to the mystery: Alinea is closed from October 10th through the 14th.
When asked for comment, both of the restaurants were equally mysterious. “We’ve spent the last two years thinking how we can collaborate with them,” said EMP’s Daniel Humm and Will Guidara. “We respect them so much. We’re so happy we’ve finally found a way.”
