An Oldie But A Goodie: Anthony Bourdain Eats His Way Through Foie Gras Farm
Last week, the foie gras ban took effect in California, and it’s safe to say that it’s caused a bit of a stir. As a result of the ban, a clip from Anthony Bourdain’s A Cook’s Tour has resurfaced on the internet in which Anthony and his brother Chris visit a French foie gras farm.
The video is making the rounds primarily because it features the controversial “gavage” process, in which ducks are force fed to fatten up their livers. Chris notes that the ducks are “not miserable being fed this way, but it’s not like they’re lining up at the chow line.” In fact, the ducks featured in the clip seem to be, as Jose Andres would say “very happy ducks”, running around the farm and generally being well looked after by the farmer, who Tony describes as being “a true craftsman”.
Will passing the clip around have an influence on the foie gras ban? Hard to say. But if nothing else, it’s a convenient excuse to stare at a younger Anthony Bourdain in the name of politics.
