EXPLAIN YOURSELF MR. MEYER.
…Uhh, he’s trying, Charlie. Danny Meyer stopped by CBS This Morning today to discuss the lasting effects of Hurricane Sandy on the restaurant industry in New York, and explain precisely why the storm was so devastating to the restaurant industry in particular.
Unfortunately, in the middle of Danny bemoaning how he was forced to throw away ten tons of food in total across his Union Square Hospitality Group restaurants, anchor Charlie Rose demanded to know why he didn’t donate that food to the homeless.
Well, first of all, Charlie, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is banning food donations to homeless shelters during Sandy relief efforts to begin with, because there’s no efficient way to track salt, fat, and fiber levels in donated foods, and everyone knows it’s better to have starving homeless people in natural disasters than hypertensive ones, right? Right.
But Danny patiently explained that the reason his food couldn’t be donated was because it had been sitting at improper temperatures for too long during the power outages, and there was no way to access the food in the midst of a storm, let alone distribute it.
