San Francisco Mayor Warns Chick-fil-A To Stay Away

Have you had enough Chick-fil-A news yet? Too bad, because there’s more. San Francisco mayor Edwin Lee tweeted a warning to the chain to rethink any plans to open a location in the city.

Closest #ChickFilA to San Francisco is 40 miles away & I strongly recommend that they not try to come any closer

His statement comes on the heels of both Boston and Chicago‘s announcements that they do not want the chain in their cities, and will do all they can to prevent any more Chick-fil-A openings. It’s not known whether there were any San Fran plans in the works, but Lee seems ready to stop them if there are.

Lee’s tweet is also timely for another reason: Protesters showed up at the grand opening of a new location in Lauguna Hills, California yesterday to demonstrate against CEO Dan Cathy’s recent comments. The restaurant’s staff was aware of the group gathering outside and so decided to hand out their grand opening prizes early, in order to prevent an altercation between customers and protesters. Even though most of the 250 customers who showed up for the celebration were simply chicken sandwich fans, some were making a statement of their own. Several people told reporters that they were going out of their way to eat at Chick-fil-A and show their support.

They aren’t alone in standing up for the chain: other recent supporters include Internet sensation Antione Dodson and both Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee. Santorum is promoting a protest of his own, on August 1, where he has urged everyone in favor of Chick-fil-A to buy some of the restaurant’s chicken. The eat-in was a response to another planned protest on August 3, where same-sex couples are planning to kiss in front of their local Chick-fil-A in celebration of National Same Sex Kiss Day.

Looks like this debate is still far from over.
