Pam Stout Appears On Letterman: Becomes New Face Of Tea Party Movement?

video

There’s no arguing that the grassroots Tea Party movement hasn’t been portrayed in a very positive light recently. After the P.R. debacle on Capital Hill during the passing of the Health Care bill, when members of the party were accused of shouting slurs at Democratic Congressmen and and throwing money at a sick man, the campaign needed a new face if it was ever going stop being so easily demonized by the left. And last night, a new candidate emerged from the most unlikely of places in the form of the well-spoken middle-aged Pam Stout from Idaho, appearing as a guest on CBS’s Late Show with David Letterman.

While some may be scratching their heads to why Letterman would have chosen Stout as a guest (it’s no secret that David’s had some bad run-ins with the GOP, most notably when John McCain canceled on him during the 2008 elections) the decision was actually brilliant. Not only as ratings gold, but a chance for the late night host to insert himself back into the news cycle. As Entertainment Weekly noted:

Stout was the mildest of souls, calm and remarkably composed for someone probably not used to the glare of network TV cameras. And Letterman loves this sort of person — a Midwestern citizen, a non-celeb; while raising serious points, he made a point of keeping things light .

Stout may have voted herself into a prime position in the Tea Party, but now that’s she had a platform to show herself as the more genial and articulate version of some in the movement, it will be Letterman she can thank when she’s put on the 2012 ballot.

And Breitbart still has his 10K because there is NO proof any racial slurs were ever thrown at congressmen. Just more trashing of the right by the left. Pathetic.

  • valkyrie101

Well, according to the congressman there were racial slurs being thrown, and the possibility of that would be reinforced by several racist signs that showed up at the tea parties. The tea party is a mixed bag. Lot’s of excellent, sincere people, and quite a few bad apples. By defending the bad apples you do your movement a disservice, because then it seems that these people represent the tea party, when in reality they don’t. Sounds like the guest on Letterman did a good job. It is important for the tea party to get some good leadership to guide the movement in the right direction. Cutting the wacko element out would be a good idea.

Here you go TfT, go watch a Congressman being spit on.

    @ SWWT

So Fox News (the one that supports the Teabaggers) is the gospel truth huh?

  • rmbltmbl

There are so many things backwards with this I will not even begin to start.

    valkyrie101 says:

Tell that to the DNC and their wacko elements.

How about all those Repub wackos spending that money at a strip joint and staying in luxurious spa hotels. They really know the meaning of conservative don’t they.

Hey Drew. Before you start throwing around words such as “grassroots,” you might want to spend 30 seconds looking at the “about us” section of the “Tea Party Express” webpage.

There you will see that the page is hosted by and paid for by the “Our County Deserves Better” PAC.

Great Job Pam! Letterman was just waiting for a slip up!

I am glad he had her on maybe people who have been calling all the tea party racist will think different after seeing this interview.

  • The Real Royal King

I don’t think so. We were already pretty sure that there were a small minority of (White) Tea Partiers who weren’t racist.

  • m

    Letterman is an incredible interviewer.

Love the fact that this old woman didn’t believe Obama was born in the United States. Then “I’d rather fight them overseas than at home” – echoing Bush’s retarded argument that the Iraqis would invade the United States. She’s fringe. A complete nut.

  • http://www.anonymousfinch.com AnonymousFinch

    m:

She didn’t say she doesn’t believe that Obama was born in the US. She said some people believe that (true); it’s irrelevant (true); he’s covering up some of his “documentation” like “school records” (true); and, when Letterman says “I think he was born in this country” she says “I don’t have a problem with that.”

Rather than trying to marginalize her by creating a strawman, why don’t you actually take on the arguments that she actually made?

Also, I must have missed it when Bush said Iraq was going to invade the United States, but I’m sure you can enlighten me on that one.

  • Sean68

This couldn’t help but be a tad bit condescending on Letterman’s part. Though perhaps, being a midwesterner himself, felt a bit uneasy about the media’s synchronized mischaracterization of a segment of our society in whom he probably sees a lot of himself, his family, and the people whom he grew up around. He can rightfully assess that Sarah Palin is a self-promoting phony, but there doesn’t seem to be anything phony in this woman and Letterman knows it.

  • marcus.lewis

She isn’t the new face in the Tea Party crowd….she represents the face of the Tea Party. WASP and over 50.

I don’t have any problems with WASP +50 in general, but there is a generational gap, in general, between older voters and younger voters. I have no problem with grammie, but i think her and my differences are much more a product of generational differences than it is ideological; the same is true for this tea partite (BTW–she said she moved when she was 9, she really had no choice in coming to the USA). I, personally, found that the government worked for me and allowed me to get out of the inner-city and helped me escape the streets. That’s most likely why I am a democrat, republicans on the other hand most likely would believe that we could have picked ourselves up from the bootstraps and made it out of there without help from the government. I have first hand recall that says it wouldn’t of happened, but they think differently.

This is from Fox “News” pre-Iraq invasion so who can say for sure but…

“We’ve also discovered through intelligence that Iraq has a growing fleet of manned and unmanned aerial vehicles that could be used to disperse chemical and biological weapons across broad areas,” Bush said in preparation for a congressional vote authorizing the use of force against Iraq. “We’re concerned that Iraq is exploring ways of using these UAVs for missions targeting the United States.”

Sounds like the Admin back then thought they were planning an invasion of the US. And of course, who can ever forget the “smoking gun in the shape of a mushroom cloud” business.

Riiiight…because these types of questions are ALWAYS asked about White Presidents, especially Republicans.

    –Cobra

  • The Real Royal King

Yes, Cobra, but do you have a video showing Republicans not asking these questions about White presidents? If not, we can’t accept what you say.

  • TylerDurdin

You left out the part where Letterman calls her a racist, sexist, homophobe, etc.

Cobra, all white presidents WERE born true Americans .

  • TylerDurdin

The real john t: if he had spit on him, why didn’t the policewoman arrest him? Oh I forgot. In your world she was also a racist.

The video showed no spit, you must acquit.

  • TylerDurdin

Dave brought up the birther question. Sounds like he doesn’t believe BHO was born in the USA.

Why thank you, Marcus. I consider you an honorable opponent too.

You are somewhat mistaken though on the average Repub’s background and motivations for their politics.

I grew up middle middle class but my dear departed husband of forty years grew up literally hungry (by the method used to ascertain hunger in the US now) and barefoot (by anyone’s standards) poor and he and I were political soul mates.

Repubs and Dems, conservatives and liberals don’t have different goals at all. We differ on the best ways to ahieve those goals.

You are, IMO, a rare Lib b/c you obviously don’t consider yourself morally and intellectually superior to those who don’t agree with you.

  • http://www.anonymousfinch.com AnonymousFinch

    Cobra:

Letterman is the one who asked those questions. She didn’t bring it up. She was just responding to him.

And, yes, the media certainly looked into George W. Bush’s background throughly. And when they couldn’t find what they were looking for, they just forged documents to make their point. When they got caught doing it, they fell back on the “fake but true” defense.

  • http://www.anonymousfinch.com AnonymousFinch

    Ted:

There’s a difference between a terrorist attack and an invasion. The claim was that Bush said Iraq was going to invade the US. He said no such thing.

Actually, questions about birth and citizenship were asked about John McCain.

The only/BIGGEST problem: They ALL want to be CHIEFS/CHEFS – NOT indians! That “other” ‘bunch’ has them “splintered” and lacking “direction”! I would donate (again), but to WHOM?

Produce all the birth certificates. Start with George Washington from 1732.

Authentic, diligent Journalists SHOULD look thoroughly into the background of ANYBODY who seriously has a chance of being President of the United States. Birthers are NOT “authentic, diligent journalists.” Neither are crackpot conspiracy theorists and hate radio personalities.

If the “Tea” Party/ies can’t get their ACT TOGETHER – it’ll make NO difference!
