Ashton Kutcher Invites American Airlines To Join His Feud Against The Village Voice

Actor Ashton Kutcher recently decided that it was best to go after The Village Voice in 140-character increments, blasting the publication for its less-than-glowing post on PSAs for Kutcher’s anti-sex trafficking initiative as well as for (as Kutcher phrased it) “selling girls” through its backpage ads.

Now, he’s taken to Twitter once again, this time involving American Airlines in his war against the Voice. “Hey @AmericanAir,” he Tweeted Friday afternoon, “are you aware that you are advertising on a site that supports the Sale of Human Beings (slavery)?” Uh oh. Selling people is Really Bad (negative).

American Airlines promptly responded:

@aplusk We will address this IMMEDIATELY. Can you please DM us detail of the site, including a link?

In fact, Kutcher is going through several, if not all, of the Voice‘s advertisers, alerting everyone from Disney to Columbia University that they are contributing to a “digital brothel.”

The Voice, for its part, has yet to respond to Kutcher’s latest tactic. We wonder, though: Does this rivalry successfully draw attention to human trafficking, or does Kutcher’s charitable work end up taking a back seat as the public sits back to watch the online drama unfold?

Kucher is making a serious ass out of himself here. I understand he’s not accustomed to being fact-checked because he doesn’t often deal in what we would call “facts,” but this is overreaction makes him look small and petty.

I honestly don’t know enough about it to comment on Kucher’s stand. I do object to the way he’s going about it. Boycotting is going down a slippery slope and I’m not in favor.

If he’s wrong, then the Voice should clearly and logically illustrate how and why he’s wrong. Put the issue away for good. If they can, that is.

If he’s right, and so far he’s illustrating his point without any kind of clear challenge, then that rag needs to go out of business for good.

    Pretty simple, really.

Kutcher so knows whereof he speaks. Backpage.com is a major trafficker of illegal sex — prostitution, in other words. And a lot of it involves children. It’s also a major money maker for the financially challenged Village Voice Media Company, which will fight to the death to keep this disgusting site alive. When I was an executive at Creative Loafing Inc. (owner of the Chicago Reader, Washington City Paper, CL Atlanta, etc.) we ended our Backpage.com relationship because of this. While we were Backpage.com partners I found myself confronted with horrible ads promoting sex with children, an ad by a woman trying to sell her baby, etc. If Kutcher reads this and wants help, I can be reached at hankscott@mac.com. Backpage.com is evil

If he’s shining a light on sex slavery, I applaud him. Sex slavery is a huge and hidden problem. Shine the light.

It’s not a boycott, though, he’s raising awareness. Good for him, if it’s substantive.
