When I read this I rushed to this site and was so relieved that you are not part of this group.
I have read the Washington Blade for some time and have been very disappointed in the way that they handled their “comments” section, allowing anti-gay voices to run or ruin the conversations repeatedly.
Thank you Dallas Voice for being such a quality publication and for indeed being the voice of the LGBT community.

Michael,

The overall point of your piece is spot on -- that the death of the legacy gay press means that there are fewer LGBT journalists chasing LGBT stories. That's the shame in the collapse of Window Media.

But there are alternatives -- I'm a former Southern Voice editor and launched ProjectQAtlanta.com a year ago, for example -- and I wanted to note that in the specific case of the Eagle raid in Atlanta that you referenced, it was not Southern Voice that was there first. They were third, after the Atlanta Progressive News, which broke the story, and us at Project Q Atlanta.

The point is that there are alternatives to the gay legacy press who regularly break LGBT stories that once were owned by the papers that closed. Are there fewer LGBT journalists now reporting? Yes, but there are outlets already stepping in to fill the void.

Craig,

You make a good point about the coverage of the Wone murder. I also think it's important to point out that the murder and investigation has also been covered by MetroWeekly, whose coverage may be more extensive than the Blade's. But the WP online three-parter was the first significant treatment by the WP and relied on the work of the Blade, MetroWeekly, and the Legal Times.

Michael - I'm one of the editors of the Robert Wone murder blog that you refer to above.

Your assertion that with "... the ongoing investigation of a D.C. murder in the home of a prominent gay activist, it was... the Washington Blade that was there first." This is mostly correct, but the story did not end there.

The Washington Post was there first, so was local DC TV, and so was the Blade. Lou Chibbaro has done good job with the crime and the follow up investigation and pending trial, but none of these outlets were able to sustain deep coverage, obsessive analysis and a heightned degree of advocacy.

We appreciate their past coverage and welcome what they can do as the May 2010 trial date looms. We recognize the MSM and gay media has reach and rescources that we don't; press tags most importantly.

Nonetheless, as four guys who make their living in and around the media, we felt that this crime, which happened only steps from where we live, deserved far more buzz, attention and scrutiny. We felt the victim deserved a loud and steady drumbeat for justice, which has been delayed for over three years.

And lastly, we felt the missteps of the investigation by both local and federal law enforcement agencies were long overdue for a spotlight. Thus, a year ago a blog was born. It takes a media village.

I think one of the problems with these niche markets is, they get so used to being the only paper that serves a particular community, and they let it go to their heads. They think, "We can do whatever we want, because it's not like we have any competition for you to switch over to if you don't like us"
The Blade went after HRC and the Equal Marriage activists visciously in 2004-2005. They gave a weekly column to Jeff Gannon of all people. The Blade has never hesitated to eat its own kind, attacking the very GLBT people it was supposed to represent, as well as any organized effort by GLBT people to assert our own equality.
The Advocate from the very start has made missteps. In the 1970's, they openly attacked Harvey Milk every chance they got. They dumbed down their content, replacing political news and journalism with gossip columns and fashion spreads, vapid interviews with celebrities and the like. For a while there, you couldn't find a GLBT person on the cover. Their service was awful, too. I bought a subscription along with a gay.com membership, and didn't get the first issue for 7 whole months (!).

The mainstream media used to completely ignore gay issues, which meant the gay press was the only way to find out what was happening in our community. Now, I can see stories about GLBT issues on MSNBC. There are millions of gay blogs, and some of them are far better than the Advocate or the Blade ever was (AmericaBlog, JoeMyGod, BlogActive). If the gay press doesn't start producing quality material that can compete with the mainstream media and blogs like the abovementioned ones, they stand no chance.

There is also a new source of LGBT news and commentary at Hearst Newspapers called "Focus On The Rainbow".

It was begun in July of this year and is written by an Associated Press award winning journalist.

You can find it at this link - http://blog.ctnews.com/evans

Nachi...what on Earth does the bad corporate management of these publications have to do with the former administration? It's unfortunate when any business fails, but it happens. Get a clue.

I could say something snarky but this actually is a sad story. However to blame bush for people not buying the publications is just wrong.
