Why did Ira Shapira in today’s Washington Post, describing his reaction to Gawker’s write-up of his recent story on a consultant who explains Millennials to Gen-Xers and Boomers. At first he felt flattered; then, ripped off...not take it to the next level and be the first to use the new media to quote himself?

What prevents journalists from reaching out further.

I am not sure that the blogosphere has done something weird to the media industry...it might just have expanded their scope.

The difference as it see it is that bloggers are not paid to share if they are not linked up and leveraging their
blog.

Just read a couple of your articles. I love your perspective (no I'm not a comment bot). Are you on Twitter?

Poor Mr. Shapira can't even get his name spelled right when someone is backing him up.

"But there’s more to this than just a straight rip off – it’s about crediting and attribution, too." It's partly that those of us that don't live and die by page views are increasingly irritated that those that do are using less and less research and attribution.

I write tech journalism (for outlets as varied as TidBITS, a 19-year-old Mac publication, to the Economist), and it's just as galling to see several hours or even weeks of ferreting out facts and analyzing them turned into something that's read on Engadget or Gizmodo with a "READ" link at the bottom, the source barely or not mentioned, and my work more or less stolen, even when one could make a case that the attribution was barely good enough.

I don't need the accolades, but especially as a freelancer, I need the clarity that the interest in a given story comes from my reporting of it. That's how I continue to work. For staffers of a publication, the same is true, because impact is often measured in page views and other metrics.
