Dodge Jumps On The Anti-British Bandwagon With Ridiculous New Challenger Commercial

So, if anyone wasn’t clear that England, once our greatest new ally, is now our enemy, the brave men and women of Dodge and Madison Avenue have revved up their engines, honked their horns, pounded a sixer, and made it abundantly clear. A new commercial, posted on YouTube last week and steadily gaining traction, features George Washington gunning his Dodge Challenger towards a bunch of Red Coats as they cower in terror. I’m not sure, but I believe the moral of the clip is, “Trucks are awesome and, also, f**k you, England! Whoo!”

That’s right, Brits! You think you can dump oil in our Gulf, play us in soccer, and not get run over by a truck! You were wrong! The minute-long piece of insanity ends with the tagline, “America got two things right; Cars and freedom.” That is so true! If I had to though, I’d add “getting pandered to by smug ad agencies” to the list.

So, what do you think? Stupid fun or stupid insulting?

UPDATE: As pointed out in the comments, the ad premiered during the USA/England World Cup match. For more on its history, check out this article whose author finds the whole thing a little dumb too.

anti British? or just pro American to sell American cars? and who declared England our enemy besides you Bershad? This is a great commercial. It’s nice to see some pride for what we went through to be a free country.
way to reach! I’m sure this commercial was in the can before the oil spill even happened.

  • Jon Bershad

I know people are going to disagree with me on this one, but all I see when I watch it is a bunch of guys in suits, sitting in an office saying, “Gee, heartland Americans sure hate British people right now. Quick, grab a camera!”

It may be goofy and funny, but it just comes off as pandering to me. You’re free to feel differently.

  • RazorsEdge

I think Colby allows you to be too MTVish and gossipy. You should also noted the commercial was in honor of the England vs. USA World Cup match. It also debuted on ESPN opening day of the world cup. Feel free to tie it to the oil spill, but at least mention Dodge’s intentions

  • Jon Bershad

Not to mention the fact that many in England are feeling vilified by the comments coming from Obama and Congress, I think this commercial, silly as it is, is also going to fuel anti-American sentiment over the pond.
At the very least, it will perpetuate the stereotype that we’re all a bunch of stupid rednecks.

I think the commercial was made with tongue in cheek as a parody of over-the-top “rah rah” nationalism, but I still feel talked down to when I watch it.

That’s the best car commercial I’ve ever seen. USA USA USA!!!!!!!!!!!

I would be willing to bet those “heartland Americans” have a little more hate for our own impotent, corrupt government than British people (who no one is blaming btw)

I Love it! Suck my tailpipe you British Bastards. HA HA HA HA HA HA…

    Washington should be wearing sunglasses.

  • germ

Talk about trying to make something out of nothing.

I got out of it that the Dodge Charger is embedded in American history, like George Washington and the Revolution.

NOTHING in the commercial made me think “anti-England” besides the Revolution.

I bet Bershad thinks we should still be under British rule (like Canada) because we were anti-England during the Revolution.

  • Jon Bershad

You got me, Germ. I’m currently draped in a Union Jack, sipping tea, and comparing the stand up of Ricky Gervais and Eddie Izzard whilst I listen to my favoUrite Robbie Williams album.

  • Puter Boi

    Jon?
You are over thinking stuff again.
    Seriously.
    Over thinking stuff.
You would be no fun at a comedy club.
    Now stop it.

  • Puter Boi

Whilst<—-the one word I would hope never to see again whilst reading Mediaite……DOH!

  • writer

I think it’s both. Pandering and funny.

Anti-British? Give me a break. Mediaite looks way too desperate here trying to link this to the BP spill backlash. Did it occur to you that this ad took a month or more to put together from ad idea to finished product? That would well predate the alleged “backlash” which only manifested itself isn’t even a backlash on Britain but an uproar over BP.

Other than that, yeah it’s a stupid ad. Really stupid.

Hey, Jonny? How about, instead of allegedly hopping on the “anti-British” vibe–which I ain’t seeing anywhere other than the White House–how about the notion that the Mad Ave. folks were trying to tap into the Tea Party meme that actually does exist?

  • WilsonTheHeretic

    So stupid.

Put the Challenger up against an Aston Martin V-12 Vantage. And then check the price versus performance.
For that matter, put a Cadillac CTS-V against the Aston Martin V-12 Vantage. Then just talk which car is more “badass”!

I like fast cars but I prefer fast American cars…and since we are talking about oil…kinda, sorta!

“The CTS-V Coupe employs the LSA 6.2L supercharged V-8 engine also found on the CTS-V Sport Sedan. Rated at 556 horsepower (415 kW) and 551 lb.-ft. of torque (747 Nm), it is the most powerful engine offered in Cadillac’s history and propels the CTS-V Coupe from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds.”

    http://www.luxist.com/2010/01/06/detroit-2010-cadillac-cts-v-coupe-serious-speed-and-style/

“Aston Martin’s most exhilarating sports car

Based on the hugely successful V8 Vantage, the V12 Vantage features a 6.0-litre V12 engine producing 510 bhp (380 kW / 517 PS), and 570 Nm (420 lb ft) of torque with a top speed of 190 mph (305 km/h) and 0-62 mph (0-100 kp/h) time of 4.2 seconds.” http://www.astonmartin.com/thecars/v12vantage

I have to admit, Cadillac will not post their speeds or specs on their website the way Aston Martin does.

Hat’s off to all the fans of Top Gear! That show forever ruined me in a positive way for cool cars!

I just want to try ‘paddle” shifting once.

  • lazzzlo

Also, Jon, personally, it’s a family thing; we’re Scots/Irish, we’ve always said also, f**k you, England! Whoo!”

  • Nachi

This is the kinda stuff that has made Chrysler so successful in recent decades. Drive them trucks! Yup.

  • da-wdc

it’s ridiculous, but watching this thing air on ESPN right before the USA-England match at a packed bar.. I appreciated it.

  • lazzzlo

Gawd, I want a Mustang right now!

  • http://none pyrope

Dodge–a lousy product from a twice bailed out automaker–has embarrassed itself even further.

  • bartmg

    Hi Jon Bershad.
A few point I would like to make.

    1. Not a truck as the article says.

    2. Looking at the location and stage of growth on the trees, grass, etc, this was filmed prior to the end of April. Thus not hate propaganda after the oil spill.

    3. How quick do you think something like this gets approved, produced, scheduled? I question your basic understand of media process.

    4. I for one know that tons of rednecks exist outside of the “heartland”. You sound like a person that lacks tolerance of others. Great thing about America is that we can all be here and do what we want. I am a strong progressive and far from being among the group you are attempting to disparage. I don’t like hateful grumpy pricks like you no matter what side they come from. You are obviously a poser intellect and act like you support progressive ideals of inclusion and anti-hate….but hate pours from between the words in your print. But Jon you know that hate sells so I hope you enjoy your buck made on it.

    5. The last thing I thought was hate to hate the British. What sad minding person jumps to think of that as their primary complaint.

    6. Over the top nationalism??? What do you call July 4th. I guess you expect I should feel guilty celebrating the 4th especially since I am proud of my background …being English. I say Go USA, Go England, and Go Challenger. “rah rah”

    7. Let people have some fun with this creative, goofy add and go piss off.

    8. Ever see Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure?…Maybe they brought the Challenger’s to George’s Army to help them out a little. It wasn’t an easy war for Americans if you study your history. Every little bit helps.

    9. Why hate the “heartland”….what did it ever do do you?

  • Max_Headroom1

I don’t care what anyone says, I loved snubbing the Brits a second time.
