Erykah Badu’s Politically-Charged “Window Seat” Taken Off Of YouTube

Singer/songwriter Erykah Badu has come under fire recently for her latest music video “Window Seat,” which shows the African-American songstress stripping down around the site of JFK‘s assassination. Along with being charged by the Dallas police for a misdemeanor in public nudity, “Window Seat” has also been pulled off of YouTube, despite the fact that all the R-rated portions were blurred out in the video. We can understand the legality of charging Badu (which our sister site Gossip Cop reported on yesterday): after all, there were public complaints that she exposed herself to children during the taping of the video, but why is YouTube taking such a hard stance on one of the more innocuous displays of nakedness on their site?

One can’t help but be reminded of Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” controversy several weeks ago, where CNN reported that MTV had pulled the video from its channel due to its graphic nature (though that rumor was later revealed to be false), and yet that video remained on Youtube, and was far more sexual than the statement Badu was making with her “Window Seat” politics.

Badu claimed that the video – which was all done in one take – represented the power of “group think” and as of Thursday said on her Twitter that no one has pressed charges. So far, YouTube has refused to comment on why it has pulled even the censored version of the video.

I saw an interview this week when asked why it caused so much controversey and she actually condemned the tabloid media for making a big deal out of the salacious elements for publicity.

I guess turning herself into a martyr at the very scene of a major historical event and stripping naked in front of tourists in the downtown area in order to sell an album no one knew about prior was not a slacious attempt at promotion.

Seriously, Drew….you can’t possibly be that obtuse.

Perhaps there are even people at youtube who remember that day in Dallas in 1963. Perhaps they pulled the video out of respect.

Oh, and she wasn’t just “stripping down around the site of JFK’s assassination”….a fake gunshot rang out and she fell on the very spot in the street where Kennedy was struck. Yes…she is quite the artist.

Drew Grant: Erykah Badu DID NOT claim that the video “represented group think” – she did however STATE CLEARLY that the video is a PROTEST against “group think”. It’s important to get your facts straight – even as a blogger, don’t ya think?

The few comments on this post thus far either prove that art education is seriously lacking or amateur comedians will seek out an audience no matter how small.

I’d be happy to share one person’s interpretation of Ms. Badu’s performance piece, but it would be lost on the simple pop culture minded.

Regardless she has people talking about “group think”. FYI, one very extreme abhorrent example of group think happened in Trenton, New Jersey this week when a 7-year old girl was pimped by her 15 year old sister to an apartment of teenagers and young adults who then engaged in a gang rape of the little girl. NO ONE attempted to stop it or report it.
