The Day The Music Died
The plane crash that killed musicians Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens remains famous in the cultural zeitgeist for a number of reasons: Holly, who was only 21(!) at the time of his death, was preternaturally talented and his music remains popular still; La Bamba, the movie which launched Lou Diamond Phillips career was based on Valens’ life; and the now iconic song ‘American Pie’ by Don McLean was inspired by the plane crash. The reason for the crash itself was blamed on bad Midwestern winter weather, though for years strange rumors circulated that the pilot had actually been shot.
