Fox News Briefly Airs Giffords Vigil, Mourner Says ‘And I Say to You, Sarah Palin…’

During a Fox News segment today, anchor Shep Smith tossed to a live shot of a vigil for critically wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, and several seconds into it, as one mourner said “…and I say to you, Sarah Palin…” then cut to a commercial. Sarah Palin, a Fox News contributor, has come under fire in the early aftermath of this mass shooting, as some are connecting it with her “crosshairs” ad from earlier this year.

With so little known at this time, cooler heads are resisting making political hay out of this shooting, but the coincidence of Giffords’ shooting, her placement on Palin’s “crosshairs” map, and Giffords’ own comments about that map have combined to make Palin an early scapegoat, particularly on the left.

Here’s the video, from Fox News:

I watched what the guy said on CSPAN and I was not exactly pleased by it. I commend FOX for cutting it out but I’m skeptical whether they would have done the same thing if it was someone saying something nasty about Obama. The jury’s still out on that.

  • http://TheDividedStatesBlog.com Publius219

lolololololololol. I say to you, Sarah Palin, that you are without doubt the dumbest person to ever be a supposedly serious candidate for national office. And everyone with a brain knows it.

A great litmus test of if a person is an idiot or not is if they’d vote for Sarah Palin for President. Because no matter how much you might dislike/disagree w/Obama, if you have a brain, you aren’t entrusting the United States to Sarah Palin under any circumstances. Which was part of the reason Obama won so many swing states in 08. She drove GOP turnout in Alabama but she turned the true independents, about 10% of the electorate, sharply to Obama. Because she’s an idiot. And true independents typically have brains, and therefore realize Sarah Palin is an idiot.

It snowed somewhere in the world today, hence global warming isn’t real.

Jury just got back! The verdict is: No, they absolutely would not have, and probably would have replayed it throughout the newsweek as part of their coverage of the tragedy.

Why… I don’t his thought’s run very deep. He jumped to the same conclusion as many on here did and Paul Krugman and too many on the left (MSNBC) have done. As the info on this nutjob comes out it appears he has some left sympathies. And I say “Who cares!!!” I don’t care if he turn out to be a liberal, MSNBC loving, Kos blogging, HuffPost hippie. That just means HE’S a nutjob… not ALL liberals. I will not hold all liberals to count for what this dbag did.

Once he got off the prompter and could really delve into the policy with some of these clowns. Not that they’re all clowns. They showed a cell phone video of someone just holding a gun, which happened to be the black man, while Brewer was talking about white people at the rally holding guns (which ther was). As much as that statement was ridiculous for her to make, THERE WAS NO VIDEO EDITED BY MSNBC. Period. There is no proof of that and there is no evidence of MSNBC deliberately editing anything to not show what it was showing. The only thing I fault them for is not knowing that the man was black, but the video was not theirs, and they clearly never took it because it was terrible grainy quality that a cell phone typically has. One former classmate can not serve as the end all be all of knowledge into whatever political leanings the assassin may or may not have. It doesn’t matter anyway. One lunatic does not define a way of thought in a nation unless he’s part of a dictatorship. In short, it doesn’t matter if he was a “liberal.” He’s not a representation of the progressive movement. Inside Cable News pokes holes in Tommy’s “theory.”

FNC Cuts Out on Sarah Palin Rant? Not so fast…
Posted in FNC on January 8, 2011 by icn2

Mediaite’s Tommy Christopher writes about FNC going to break when some guy at a demonstration starts to invoke Sarah Palin’s name. Christopher seems to believe, or at the very least infers the possibility, that FNC did it because Palin’s an FNC contributor.

During a Fox News segment today, anchor Shep Smith tossed to a live shot of a vigil for critically wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, and several seconds into it, as one mourner said “…and I say to you, Sarah Palin…” abruptly cut to a commercial.

At best, though, it’s an eery, unfortunate confluence.

Sounds ominously damning doesn’t it? Well, it does until you see the video clip Christopher has up there. It’s pretty obvious what’s going on. Shep was headed to a break, which he even announced, and teased about this vigil at the capitol which the control room then brought up on the screen. But since they were headed to commercial it was only going to be up a few seconds anyways. It was a tease. It just happened to be a freak coincidence that the person on the screen uttered Palin’s name just before the commercial started.

If it had been a real cutaway caused by the control room not wanting to show something it would have been more along the lines of what happened during Stewart and Colbert’s Rally for Sanity when Tamron Hall announced that they were going to switch to it for a bit…only they happened to be switching when Stewart was running that talking head montage which included clips of people on MSNBC like Ed Schultz and Keith Olbermann…and they quickly cut back to Hall who really hadn’t stopped talking the whole time. That’s a textbook case of control room evasion. Tonight was just a bizarro world coincidence.

Anyone who has lived overseas or spent long periods of time overseas will report the same thing. People around the world describe Americans as arrogant violent cowboys. This is an American blind spot. Loughner’s ties to conspiracy theory
    By: Carrie Budoff Brown

Jared Lee Loughner’s rants about grammar and mind control track closely to the writings of a conspiracy theorist who believes that is how the government controls the populace, one leading group says – and the man tells POLITICO he agrees with some of Loughner’s statements.

The far-right activist, David Wynn Miller, said in a telephone interview that he didn’t know Loughner, but agreed with his statement in a YouTube video that “the government is implying mind control and brainwash on the people by controlling grammar.”

“Absolutely I would agree with it,” said Miller, 62, a former tool-and-die maker from Milwaukee who claims 1 billion “students” worldwide.

But he said any suggestion that his writings influenced Loughner to go on a shooting rampage is “ridiculous.”

This is an American blind spot. The Second Amendment was put in place to protect the states right to maintain their states militias which were made up of citizen soldiers, Those were different times.

Inside Cable News: FNC Cuts Out on Sarah Palin Rant? Not so fast…

Palin was created by the desperation of John McCain (from Arizona, of course). She should never have been elevated to the position she’s in. Palin’s values probably don’t reflect much about Alaska and they certainly have nothing to do with the lives of 90% of Americans. Most American are not against guns, but I’m certainly against the stranglehold of the NRA which condones and encourages the use of AK-47′s and the virtually unrestricted sale of guns in most parts of the country as well as allowing people to carry concealed weapons wherever they want. We must be crazy and the craziness has to end. What will it take to understand that the language of violence does lead to violence. Also, the anti Obama, the anti-immigrant and anti Muslim bigots should stop being in denial about their prejudices. We have big probems but the right is basically part of the problem and I wish this weren’t the case. The left has a lot to answer for but, in reality, more of the answers are coming from the left. Wake up Americans. We have a great heritage and we don’t have to go down as most corrupt empires have, but we will unless we wake up out of our stupor.

Just play the whole damn clip and let us decide for ourselves.

That IS the whole damn clip, at least as the viewers saw it.

While the exact procedure varies from one TV station to another, the director usually calls for the “break” sequence to start and a countdown begins. Other personnel follow the count and perform the actual video roll, switching, etc.

There are only a few reasons why such an abrupt “cut” as this one would occur: operator or equipment error, for instance. “Breakaways” to local cable systems for local commercial insertions are usually pretty smooth, though the “return cut” may be awkward.

This looked like a deliberate “crash cut” to the break – meaning they were in a hurry to cut the guy off. I cannot swear to this, of course, because I wasn’t in the control room – but SOMEBODY was.

I agree with the sentiment that politics of any sort were inappropriate in this setting. Nevertheless, if they had a choice Fox would’ve been better off letting the guy “talk into black,” regardless of what he said. After the break, they could have noted the inappropriateness or simply continued the show rather than drawing attention to the situation.

Having worked in TV for many years, I know – painfully well – that “flubs” do happen. I could tell heartbreaking/hilarious tales of such travails from a first-person perspective. Ahem.

The best way to deal with an awkward on-air situation is to maneuver out of it as gracefully as the situation permits. As we see here, crash cuts only serve to draw unwanted attention.

Again; I cannot say with ontological certitude that this was the case in this instance.

“Go watch MSNBC… it will tell you what you want to hear.”

Fox Propaganda and MSNBC will tell right wingers and liberals respectively what they want to hear most times. The difference that hosts and guests on Fox lie through their teeth and rarely if ever correct themselves. MSNBC gets the facts right and make corrections when they get the facts wrong. The difference is not just bias, it’s credibility. The Fox Propaganda Channel has none and cannot attain it so long as Beck is employed there.

Well, I knew I could count on that little bitch Tommy to hype anything that was anti-Palin.
Since Tommy is the George Soros paid Palin hater on this site, just another hateful liberal post followed by comments by the liberal wack jobs.

I wonder why it is always left wing wackos that revel in this stuff. Barack Obama tells his people to bring guns to the fight and none of the liberals care that he says that. The next night Kenneth Gladney is beat up by SEIU goons at a rally and no liberals care. Obama tells Latinos to keep in mind who their enemies are and the liberals think that is just fine.
Then a wack job who is more anarchist than anything else… and aren’t anarchists just far far left liberals? he kills Giffords and others and someone liberal twisted minds say it is Sarah Palin’s fault.

Liberals have no moral compass because they basically have no moral base so they can have no shame which allows them to think they are always on the right side of the argument even while they are on all sides of the argument at the same time. Isn’t the twisted hateful liberal mind wonderful?

Put the dress back in the closet Tommy. It does not fie. Too tight in the butt.

If Beck makes any common sense to you – it’s you that is the idiot. A failed student and self-proclaimed “opinionator” whom only just realized the communist artwork that shrouds 30 Rock – can’t be that bright. He lacks any real history outside of his alcholic and drug binged youth, then the indoctrination into Mormonism and his selective choice of history to create a hate and fear Armageddon that the religious fanatics in the right wing pray for, smearing any and everyone that calls him out on his lies. His flock is too innocent or ignorant to know any better or question him – and Beck becomes, like Jim Jones and David Koresch, echoed here. This is his job for the Republicans. Distort and lie – call the opposition socialists, communists, liberals, progressives, fascists – anything to stir the hate and fear crowd that is the GOP and Teabaggers they created from the disenfranchised cults hiding in the woods and under rocks of America. The Republicans are doing Bin Laden’s work – destroying America from within.

Perhaps you’re being satirical, it’s hard to tell sometimes. No, the left does not support assassination.

What Backus commented about Beck and Fox is spot on. It’s nice to see someone else who can tell what that liar and charlatan is up to.

    James Gregory Backus says:
“If Beck makes any common sense to you – it’s you that is the idiot.”

I would not say “idiot” though; I would argue that people who think that Beck makes common sense are ignorant, gullible fools. They may be smart at their profession but ignorant ab out political discourse and the Constitution which Beck absurdly claims is supported by “faith, hope and charity.” This is just uncommon nonsense, and any high school graduate with common knowledge in civics should know this.

Sarah Palin is furious right now. She’s not furious over the tragedy that killed 6 people and wounded 14 others. She’s furious that she has been connected to this tragedy. If you look at her initial statement to Glenn Beck she is acting completely defensive. There was no outpouring of contrition. She has no class or character. All she cares about is greed and power. We do not need more people like her in politics.

  • Tedderman
