Glenn Beck: Arianna Huffington Is “Media Matters After A Couple Of Drinks” (UPDATED)

your moment of glenn

Glenn Beck may want to consider some sort of future career as a professor…he’s very good with the pointer stick. Beck set aside a segment of tonight’s show to specifically address the remarks Arianna Huffington made to Roger Ailes on this Sunday’s This Week. (Actually he began with a fun lesson ratings: “how can you kill something [MSNBC] that’s already dead?” SNAP). During the panel segment of This Week Huffington decried the language Beck uses on his show and asked Ailes whether he isn’t “concerned about the language that Glenn Beck is using, which is, after all, inciting the American people?” (Short answer: no.) One of the phrases that particularly bothered Huffington — “slaughtered” which she seems to understand as the slaughtering of actual people — came from this quote from Beck from a show that aired back in November.

“We will thrive — as long as these people are not in control. They are taking you to a place to be slaughtered.”

Professor Beck took to the instant replay to explain to Arianna — whom he likes to describe as “Media Matters after a couple of drinks” — that what he was actually talking about was the economy, which is somewhat more evident if when read the entire quote below (though the video version is obviously far more entertaining). Two things here. One, I suspect Arianna doesn’t actually watch Beck; this may be an obvious observation, but for all his hyperbole Beck does not ever call for violence. Two, when it comes to hyperbolic statements HuffPo may not exactly be in the same league as Beck, but they are not pillars of objective journalism either…Arianna knows where her shocking headline bread is buttered for sure (also the reason I have no doubt Arianna did ask Beck to write for her…I wouldn’t be surprised if the offer still stands actually UPDATED: please see below). Anyway, full “slaughter” quote below and video lesson after that.

There is one thing you cannot call any of these plans. You can’t call it America. You can’t do it. I told you yesterday buckle up your seatbelt, America. Find the exit. There’s one here, here and here. Find the exit closest to you and prepare for a crash-landing because this plane is coming down because the pilot is intentionally steering it into the trees. Most likely, it will happen sometime after Christmas. You are going to see this economy come up — we’re already seeing it – - and now it’s going to start coming back down again. And when you see the effects of what they’re doing to the economy, remember these words: we will survive. We know we’ll do better than survive. We will thrive — as long as these people are not in control. They are taking you to a place to be slaughtered.

UPDATE: It has been pointed out to me that I entirely missed two posts on this matter by Arianna, herself, who confirms that she did issue the invitation to blog…and then proceeded to reissue it noting that Beck would have to follow the same rules as everyone else meaning, among other things, no conspiracy theories! Arianna also states that she never believed Beck was using the term “slaughter” literally (whether it be Barack Obama or Andy Stern who is metaphorically flying the plane) and that is the Beck’s language that is a concern:

The crux of the matter was never whether Glenn Beck really believes Barack Obama is planning to actually slaughter Americans. It’s the damage being done by the inflammatory rhetoric and imagery he constantly uses. The crux of the matter was never whether Glenn Beck really believes Barack Obama is planning to actually slaughter Americans. It’s the damage being done by the inflammatory rhetoric and imagery he constantly uses. The evoking of “slaughter” and “killing sprees” and a president who “has a deep-seated hatred for white people” is meant to play into the public’s legitimate anxiety over the economy — and fan the flames of fear.

And that brings us back to the question I originally asked Roger Ailes on This Week: “Aren’t you concerned about the language that Glenn Beck is using — which is, after all, inciting the American people?”

I’m going to hazard a guess that while Beck’s numbers and popularity remain as high as they currently are Ailes’ “concern” will remain muted. In the meantime, you can read both posts here.

I thought that was the tittle of the night. Good job!

A most entertaining take down of Ms. Arienna by Beck tonight. I especially like how he blew her kisses at the end of the segment.

It is quite humorous that Arienna goes on national tv to condemn Beck’s language and then has no problem appearing with a man who said this:

Olbermann: Without ‘Fascistic Hatred,’ Malkin Is Just a ‘Mashed-Up Bag of Meat with Lipstick’
Joseph Isadore Lieberman, Democrat Connecticut: “a Senatorial prostitute.”
    Of Roger Ailes, “fat ass.”
Chris Wallace, “a monkey posing as a newscaster.”
Rush Limbaugh, a “big bag of mashed up jack-ass.”
Scott Brown — well, you all remember that diatribe.

Oh the hypocrisy of it all.

  • TeaPartyAmerican

GREAT TITLE!!! And very non-biased take on the segment! Refreshing :-)

@Glynnis: In yesterday’s column, Arianna <reissued her invitation to Beck, though she wrapped it in a swat against him. Nonetheless, if he wanted to take it, she couldn’t refuse, especially when you consider the pageviews.

  • sarainitaly

i’m sure Arianna just gets all of her talking points from Olby…

    Great post Glynnis!

It just kills me that she appears on Olbermann, to complain about Beck using inciteful language. It’s like, are you KIDDING me??? LOL!

  • Ted

The teabaggers have their panties in a bunch tonight. Huffington took their Dear Leader to the woodshed and exposed him for the fraud that he is (and gave him a damn good spanking on top of it). Teabaggers…tonight you may want to sleep with mommy and daddy – yes, that means you sarainitally!! I’m trying to be helpful here.

Ted, do you ever actually read the post before you comment? Seriously, how can you read that and come away with “exposed him for the fraud that he is” when the exact opposite is clear as hell as he is on video, explaining it in clear concise language. Seriously, are you that stupid? Or just that rabid?

  • TeaPartyAmerican

He showed it! Black & White… Huffington lied about his comment. End of story.

  • Ted

Now that Beck has been exposed by Arianna Huffington as a liar and a fraud (that was basically a good old fashioned bitch slapping don’t you think?) what will you do? Whine, bitch, moan, wet your pants, seek comfort in the arms of fellow teabaggers? Yes, without a doubt. But beyond having the IQ of a fur ball you are human beings…as far as I know. So, you will need some support. So I am offering to facilitate a Glenn Beck is a Fraud and a Liar Support Group. Look up timzank, located in Glenn Becks ass for details. Might I suggest the meetings be held there…for the sake of convenience. I will pray for you!!

JimW, you are a Glenn Beck fan. That lumps you in with the lowest form of scum there is in this country. I mean that with all sincerity.

Good decision enrolling at the Koldys Kiddie message board. Mark will delete or edit all comments that are unfavorable towards Fox News or the least bit rude to his kiddies. Simultaneously you will be allowed to be rude to the “Fox haters” without fear of reprisal. It will be much more to your liking and nature.

Good job on the article, and good job with calling out the trolls. I might start visiting here more often if you keep this up! =)

This was Beck at his best. Funny, on point, and you could see he was having a good time. You can always tell when someone is feeling insecure about their status, they attack Beck or Palin! It’s guaranteed to get attention, and in the end that’s all they crave. Say what you will about Glenn Beck, his ratings are through the roof, and his message is getting out there. If you don’t like what he says, don’t watch his show or listen to his radio program, it’s as simple as that. Rush shot to superstardom via Clinton, Stewart had Bush, now it’s Beck’s turn with Obama. Newsertainment can be fun, but as most of us know, it’s not the only game in town….

  • m

So Glenn Beck think its okay to use any word, as long as he’s not being literal? Would he have used “raped”? Cause just because you’re not literal doesn’t mean it’s proper to use any type of word.

  • http://silentmajority09.com Southernman

I love how context doesn’t seem to matter unless it involves a comment made by someone on the left. The leftist media loves to pull little bits and pieces out and imply that they mean something that they clearly do not. Beck and others like him go out of their way to provide the context of statements made by Obama and his sycophants. He does this because the context is the point. If the left want to take down conservative hosts they are going to have to do better than Huffington and Olberman.

    Steve,
How on Earth did my 2 rather “innocuous” comments on this thread get me tossed in with these guys?

  • The Real Royal King

It seems to me that much of the foregoing is an excellent example of the damage to civil discourse Beck and Beck-like media creatures cause. The wink-wink, nod-nod approach to “journalism” is puerile and ugly. It masks and therefor gives license to incendiary, inciteful speech, it destroys accountability. We see this with Beck, but we also see it with Olbermann and others. It is an attack under cover of darkness upon the First Amendment, for it elevates the glancing blow, the disingenuous syllogism, the veiled deception over the truth and understanding the First Amendment is suppose to allow us to achieve. Even attacks upon the President are glossed over, as long as they were made on a moronic morning show, because it lacks substance, instead of a show supposedly of content. Yet, as we see truth, understanding and the First Amendment itself fall victim to these self-serving, self-promoting men as out of place in our democracy as fish on bicycles, our thoughts are drowned out by the rousing cheers of the subsequent generation Couglin fans, idiots cheering on demagogues. If there is good news in this threat to our democracy, it is that so very few Americans actually watch or listen to Beck, and fewer still to Olbermann. Nations of lesser substance than ours have faded into oblivion by the course we see taken here. While the very good sense of ordinary Americans may not be heard over the din of the demagogues and their zealots, America and Americans will prevail notwithstanding this old and tiresome threat. And, can there be any doubt that the bloated egos of the Beck’s and Olbermann’s of the world will at last explode in a feast of hubris and ego. Their gases are inherently unstable as all but the most frenzied fans can readily see.

These professional observers/critics NOT WATCHING the people they actually cover is something so prevalent that it’s scary.

Whether its Olbermann or Beck, it fairly obvious that they don’t watch at all, or don’t watch much and/or they depend on minute long clips linked at opposition sites.

  • The Real Royal King

That’s why I like Newshounds, Cecelia. They obviously watch the FOX programs they so aptly critique.

  • Cecelia

    TRFRK,

If energy were bs, you’d be a nuclear power plant.

  • timzank

In response to TRRK, That’s a magnificient soliquoy you posted at 7:39…However, let me point out a few things: The damage to civil discourse is no worse now than it was in the 1700′s you just have “instant” access to lying reporters and bloviating pundits. (both have been around since time began)

You wax on about how even attacks on the President are “glossed over”. Read a little history, Presidents since George Washington have been called every nasty name in the book by the press, the public, the pontificaters, by everyone. It’s part of the gig. There really is nothing new here, we’re just arguing over “who we like better”…

There is no “threat to our Democracy” either, for two reasons, one, we are a republic, and two, the very right of Beck, Olby, Etc to blather on is what keeps our republic free, you just don’t like what they say and believe. It’s call disagreement, simple.

You say “Nations of lesser substance than ours have faded into oblivion by the course we see taken here”. Ya wanna name a couple?? Any that were even “comparable” to the USA? There has never been a form of govt on the face of the Earth like this one, it’s simply one of a kind.

Use a little common sense, there have ALWAYS BEEN Becks and Olbys, (albeit with ink, then microphones, then cameras, now internet) and there always will be.

  • The Real Royal King

I did say, Tim Z. Ank, that the Republic would survive the Beck’s and Olbermann’s.

I also agree about vicious attacks. Certainly, some of the political cartoons of the past make our present satire seem tame.

Let me be very clear. I have no problem with content, of any sort. I wish our content were broader and deeper. Similarly, I have problem with bias. That FOX is a voice for the right troubles me not in the least. That MSNBC is emerging as a voice for moderates, progressives and liberals bothers me not. I have problems with demagogues. Pure and simple. We must be vigilant in our attacks upon them. There value of a Mediaite or a Huffington Post is that they call out demagogues.

  • writer

MSNBC is emerging as a voice for moderates? As Greg Gutfeld might say, if by moderate you mean Bill Ayers. And if Huff Post really points out demagogues, they must be looking in a mirror. It’s really unfathomable how Huffington could sit there with a straight face complaining about name calling, then appear regularly on Olbermann.

  • TfT

That part really amazes me too writer — Huffington has the audacity to complain about language on FNC and then appears with Olbermann who is clearly the most sexist man on television. His treatment of women and women minorities is way over the top. His general hate speech is bad enough, but he is particularly harsh when talking about women.

I have seen at least three articles today on various sites discussing the end of countdown. Olbermann jumped the shark a long time ago, but his recent diatribes have even his lefty friends questioning his sanity and stability.

  • writer

Olbermann and women. Sort of a macabre, Norman Bates thing going on there, I think.

  • m

Well, the difference between Beck and Olbermann is that Olbermann doesn’t advance conspiracy theories, revolutionary sentiment and essentially condone violent behavior and bloodshed on his show. Olbermann call people baby names while Beck call for people to murder. Beck even instructed his own audience to not kill anyone. You ever think Olbermann have had the need to do that?

  • timzank

Don’t just do the “drive-by” attack on people you don’t like, back it up with the facts. It does your credibility no good whatsoever to come off sounding like a lying 5th grader talking about another kid in class.

  • timzank

As an afterthought, let me ask you this M, when a news reporter says “The star of such and such show came out of the theater and was “mugged” by reporters, do you (personally) think the reporters actually, physically, “mugged” him? As in beat him up and stole his watch and wallet? Or do you understand what the news reporter meant by that use of hyperbole?

  • J Baustian

When one enters the arena of political invective, it should not be a surprise when when your targets strike back. If your criticism is gentle and amusing, then the response may come back in like manner. If it is nasty and vicious, then the gloves come off and there are no rules limiting what responses are legitimate.

Beck is amusing, usually factual, and always entertaining. Olbermann is loathsome and odious. Huffington is pleasant and attractive. Siding with Olbermann against Beck is not a good move for Huffington; associating herself with Olbermann will result in some of his dirt rubbing off on her.
