Jake Tapper Calls Out RNC Chairman For Comparing Obama To Italian Ship Captain

video

Jake Tapper took RNC Chairman Reince Priebus to task on Twitter for comparing President Obama to Captain Francesco Schettino, the Italian captain of the Costa Concordia. “Help me out here,” Tapper tweeted. “It’s ok to make light of horrific ship crashes if the people who died weren’t Americans?” He added the hashtag, “#stayclassy”

Tapper quickly added, “And for the record, i questioned POTUS’s “drone” joke, too,”

He added that whether or not Priebus was joking or making a serious point, he felt the comparison was off-base:

Priebus originally made the remarks to Bob Schieffer on Face The Nation, “In a few months, this is all going to be ancient history, and we’re going to talk about our own little Captain Schettino, which is President Obama, who’s abandoning the ship here in the United States and is more interested in campaigning than doing his job as president.”

Preibus is a most unfortunate choice to lead any party into an election, and this vile statement underscores that. The man has no communication skills, none, and it appears has has little sense of decency.

‘U.S.S. Obamaboat’: Ad Paints Obama as Captain of Slave Ship

Republican Congressional candidate Mark Oxner’s new ad will certainly
have people talking. Set aboard a ship of fools, the ad almost seems as
if it could have been directed by the macabre Tim Burton and offers an
eccentric mix of just about everything — from a Cialis reference to a
cameo by the famed “Anonymous” masked-figure, from a jab at Obamacare to
a dig at the “99 percent.”

On this Alice in Wonderland-esque vessel, rafts full of enslaved
children row-away as Captain Barack Obama of the “U.S.S. Obamaboat”
recklessly steers the ship toward the edge of a waterfall, and, certain
    doom.

It comes as no surprise then, when Oxner closes the ad by asking voters to “turn this ship around” before it is too late.

Oh please Jake – get a grip.  He was making a point of the Captain abandoning the ship – just like Obama has done here — his wife is off buying thousands of dollars of fancy langerie, he is off golfing day in and day out.  HIs comment had nothing to do with the injured or missing or dead. Jake is making a mountain out of a molehill – no surprises, he is a member in good standing of the msm…campaigning for Obama.

What a stupid comment by Jake.  I guess Bob needed some help from some younger journo, so he called up Jake and asked him to help him out of his pickle, cuz he didn’t know what the Chairman was talking about and he looked lost, old, and foolish.  By getting a younger journo to look young, lost and foolish maybe makes Bob feel better, but makes Jake look like a clymer.

Evidently Reince Priebus is postulating the myth that the sitting President cannot campaign for re-election, while Priebus’ attack machine goes into overdrive between now and November.

Go pound sand, you peculiar little man.  I hope the Walker-associates scandal in Wisconsin drags you down and under, and the RNC dumps you like dog poop.

  • Anonymous

Seems to me if you going to make comparisons about presidents doing stupid things on boats, President Bush would be the first one to come to mind.

  • Anonymous

Obama hasn’t abandoned his job. That’s absurd. And what his wife may or may not be doing is irrelevant.

The comment was offensive and stupid. Tapper had it right.

And the notion that Scheifer, who works for CBS, would call Tapper, who works for ABC, and ask him to post somethig on Twitter is just….well….crazy.

Yeah, the fact that he is rescuing hostages in Somalia, killing off our terrorist foes, managing a horrible economy as best he can, and working to make sure folks have affordable health insurance are truly signs of a delinquent captain at the helm.

Was Sarah Palin or her family killed in a tragic accident?  Did RRE compare Palin to some tragic disaster where people died?  If so, I would love to see the link.  Also do you find it odd and ironic that Sarah “cries” out for decency after the fact that a congressional member of a district that was “targeted” by her super pac was shot point blank in the head?  I am not saying that this ad was the reason (it wasn’t) however you cannot get past the poor timing.  Also the “second amendment remedies” talking point was quickly abandoned after that.

    It’s gone beyond that.
It’s already formed a huge percentage of Romney’s language.  With each day, each hour of each day, the images & speech increase in ugliness, becoming more & more extreme, more intolerable. This is white supremacism at work. It’s toxic. It reeks of desperation. It’s been done, & will be done again tomorrow, & the next day, & the next, more & more offensive, more & more divisive – all in an effort to appease & animate the Bircher wing. Now we see it right from the top of the Republican establishment: the RNC chair. This isn’t going to stop. It’s going to get worse, far worse, all under the pretext of campaign speech.

  • Hout Bosques

They won’t dump him. This is what the owners of the party want. This is the work product of the Republican establishment. This is the talk of bullies & thugs, & were going to see more & more of it, until the violence starts – & it won’t stop there.

Liberals are sensitive and not prone to harsh or edgy criticism.

With their progressive sensibilities, they would never attack anyone’s children or spouse or say anything untoward or unkind. They prefer to walk among the flowers as they ponder deep thoughts and smile at the forest animals.

  • bsorin1

Hmmm. I don’t remember Schettino taking out Osama Bin Laden, giving the order to rescue hostages, getting free trade tresties passed, or a strategic arems treaty passed, or eliminating Don;t Ask, Don’t Tell, or restructuring student deblt, or, or, or…The Republicans seem to be having a contest to see who gets first prize for offensiveness. Nice to know they have one strength. Of course that is what people do when they do not have any new ideas…

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

It was perhaps an ill conceived spur of the moment comment, but I don’t think it was that bad. Priebus said he thought of it because he saw the ships in the background, behind Schaeffer. Maybe he planned on using the sinking ship metaphor, and
Schettino’s name popped into his head.

People use metaphors all the time. Obama used the driving the car into a ditch for two years… Do you know how many people died in car crashes during that time?  I guess he shouldn’t have used that metaphor because people were losing loved ones in car accidents, every single day…?

Maybe next time Priebus should just say Obama is throwing the economy off a cliff, with Grandma.

Or perhaps people should stay away from metaphors, altogether.

    Obama’s war metaphor a misfirehttp://www.bostonherald.com/news/opinion/op_ed/view/20220129obamas_war_metaphor_a_misfire/

Of course our the RNC chair should not be expected to act better than random bloggers on the internet. Its not like Republicans are any classier than trolls you would find on omegle or 4chan(or mediaite). The difference is that those are random internet a-holes while these jokers are supposed to be elected representatives of the people.

With people like you the GOP won’t be around too much longer in its current form; the Republican’s system of spinning reality is reaching the RPM and pressure limit before it just bursts into a hot mess. Conservative extremists can only get so angry before they act too stupidly for their own good. The mess in the republican primary is just a symptom of this larger problem with the anti-intellectualism of Modern Conservativism in America.

Did he add the “stayclassy” hashtag to the Obama comment? NO! So that’s all you need to know about this DNC tool.

Priebus and his DNC counterpart are freakin idiots. I don’t buy either of their crap. If you believe what either is saying, you know nothing about what’s going on. We need a third party. Both are just pandering and not addressing the complex issues and what it’ll take to get this country back on track.

So you felt the same about Obama’s drone joke?

Funny thing about Jake’s defence…. he didn’t add the “styclassy” hashtag to his Obama comment? Interesting double standard on his part? Not a very balanced jurno if he has 2 different responses to 2 comments he feels are out of line and HE is comparing them as being equal to defend himself.

Remember Jake is the one comparing the 2 comments he called out to say he’s balanced… right? Then why 2 very different responces?

  • The Real Royal Emperor

I’m not sure your view of American television journalists is that valuable, but I would like to know who you deem to the fairest Italian journalist.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

There are some pretty grave institutional problems with a third party. The cards are most assuredly stacked against it becoming viable. If it became viable, how would that affect elections in which we have no clear majority? Might a third party simply be a second fracture? Ideologically, I tend to agree with you. A party which is both fiscally responsible and socially “hands off” could well win hearts and minds. Our problem now is that neither party is fiscally responsible. The Republicans face the additional hurdle of being wholly dedicated to a bard of Fundamentalist conservatism that simply doesn’t reflect wider American values. I do have a difficult time getting excited about either party.

  • Gloves Angus Donahue

“… the imminently fair and objective Jake Tapper…”

    Jake’s about to be fair?

Tapper is eminently fair, compared to the rest of the lefty horde, but he ain’t perfect.

  • http://twitter.com/mattparkerfl Matt Parker

This comment is totally offensive, idiotic, wrongheaded, out of bounds, and an insult to this President. Forget an apology; this “Preibus” character needs to either be fired by the last remaining competent people in the GOP or else resign for his own good. This is indicative of the vile hate and mindless venom that are all that the Republican Party has left to campaign on. The issues are not on their side this year, so they personally attack Obama with disgusting tactics. The GOP is dying as a reasonable political alternative…   http://www.sunstateactivist.org

That is an astute point and a factor in the debate about a third party. It is not at all clear that the Republican party remains the Republican party in anything but name. The problem is not electoral in the short term, it’s demographic. The most significant change is, of course, the swelling Hispanic population throughout the entire nation, and in immediate terms in the Southwest. But, the demographic changes are beyond just the Hispanic factor. In key Southern and Southwestern states, there is a demographic change in education as well. The more educated populace in Virginia and North Carolina and Colorado are already making these states less reliably Republican. A similar change is under way in Texas. There are signs change is in the air in Georgia, Florida and Louisiana, even Tennessee. A Southern Strategy dependent upon Kentucky, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas is a failed strategy. The impulse will be for the Republican Party to reach out to the Northeast and the Midwest. But, this will necessarily have a liberalizing effect upon the Party, no doubt to be strongly resisted by the remnants of the Southern Strategy states. We may well end up with a Third Party within the existing Republican Party. Odder things have happened. The Whigs have come and gone. On issues of race, the two existing parties completely flipped in the 1960′s. It should be interesting.

People are most likely forgetting that Obama has called himself the Captain of the Ship, and has used Righting the Ship metaphors for a while. Something I’m sure Priebus was aware of…
PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: Sometimes when I’m talking to my team, I- describe us…as…I’m the captain and they’re the crew on a ship, going through really bad storms. And no matter how well we’re steering the ship, if the boat’s rocking back and forth and people are getting sick and…they’re being buffeted by the winds and the rain and…at a certain point– if you’re asking, “Are you enjoying the ride right now?” Folks are going to say, “No.” And are they going to say, “Do you think the captain’s good—doing a good job?” People are going say, “You know what? A good captain would have had us in some smooth waters and sunny skies, at this point.” And I don’t control the weather. What I can control are the policies we’re putting in place to make a difference in people’s lives.

The real point here is whether Preibus is an adequate spokesperson for a party in a bit of a mess. The difference is the past Republican Presidents you could reference were governing at the same time as campaigning.  Obama has been like a bully/spoiled child on the playground that when his playmates stop wanting to play with him he takes all the balls and goes home.  He was barely engaged with Congress when Reid/Pelosi were in charge (insisting on bills being passed without members reading them) and has bypassed Congress ever since the American people voted his party out of the house majority.

I actually believe that there’s an excess of sensitivity to the use of this analogy. The Titanic has been a widely used metaphor for decades — and that cost many hundreds of lives — so I’m not sure why this one is off limits.

Nevertheless, to suggest that Obama has abandoned a sinking ship is beyond absurd. He’s worked tirelessly to get this wreck afloat and seaworthy, notwithstanding three years of Republicans spitefully sitting in the lifeboats with their arms crossed.

You mean the boy of your dreams.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

Given the terrible weakness of the Republican field, certainly, I will be voting for President Obama. And, I will likely contribute and support, as well. It will not be with great enthusiasm, however. President Obama has always been a  bit too far right for me.

  • Cecelia

What it would take for him not to attempt to marginalize you by insinuating that you’re an Italian outsider to the discussion of US domestic matters (while he simultaneously calls other people “xenophobes”), is a sense of basic decency.

Hence you’re SOL there, I’m afraid.

  • Cecelia

You’ve hit upon a correct summation simply by being a stopped clock, Valk, but it’s still a correct one.

  • Pablo

Was Francesco Schettino killed in some tragic accident?

Also the “second amendment remedies” talking point was quickly abandoned after that.

That was only a talking point on the left. On the right, it was part of an answer to a direct question that Sharron Angle was asked.

The Dems are fiscally responsible. Pay attention. don’t listen to GOP rhetoric exclusively.

  • Pablo

“We came, we saw, he died!” Hahahaha!

Debbie Downer is out there still blaming the Tea Party for the Gifford shooting and the deaths of those attending the event.  That was on January 12th, this year.

    http://news.investors.com/Article/597682/201201121844/wasserman-schultz-gabrielle-giffords-tea-party-WEBHED-DNC-Chair-Says-Giffords-Shooting-Tea-Partys-Fault.htm

She also stupidly claimed that Paul Ryan’s plan to cut government spending would cause deaths to senior citizens, she then complains about rhetoric.  You people have no room to complain.

  • Pablo

Hey, so why is health insurance getting more expensive for everyone? I can see how Obama might not have complete control over that while he’s parachuting into Somalia, but it still doesn’t seem to add up.

  • Pablo

Yeah, he’s only played about a hundred rounds.

  • Pablo

Well, we have this little thing called the Constitution and it requires annual budgets.

  • Pablo

Who said anything about dead people?

  • The Real Royal Emperor

Illogical. Mr. Christopher is not in the Tapper crucifixion party now forming.

  • Pablo

Did someone say vile hate and mindless venom? Here’s some now!

  • Anonymous

No. If you break my window, you’ll end up in jail like the OWSers !! HA !

He’s also spending like a drunken sailor, made a mess of the economic recovery, not managed it; by November every citizen in this country will owe over $50,000.  By this time next year it will be worse should the unpopular Obamacare not be overturned by
    SCOTUS.

  • Anonymous

But flogging the “Fox NEWS” tripe should be considered, pfft!

  • Anonymous

No he didn’t.  He said the President has ‘abandoned ship’ to go campaigning.  That is untrue.  The President is taking steps to get re-elected as part and parcel of what he needs to do.  The effect of that comment is to draw comparisons between the qualities of the Italian Captain and President Obama, and there is no comparison.

  • Anonymous

Link?  The only budget Obama has signed into law came in the form of a pork laden omnibus two months after he took office.  It included across the board spending increases and over 8000 earmarks.  This country has existed on continuing resolutions and built in spending increases since.

Of course he doesn’t want a budget because he doesn’t want to lose the yearly spending increases by battlling with the House over spending cuts to get a new, lawfully required, budget passed.

Tacky Republican/ Tea Party. Not only are they becoming an enemy of the state they are showing the rest of the World just how Classless they really are.

  • Anonymous

I would be more receptive to Tapper’s argument if he or any of his colleagues in the media called out the DNC chair for saying that the Tea Party caused the Giffords shooting in Arizona.

  • Anonymous

In other words, your big bad al Qeada slayer can’t take election politics like every other president has had to.  Doesn’t he own the bully pulpit with most of the press in his back pocket?  I believe he does,  there is really no need to inflict the expense of his fundraising onto the people in this down economy.

The Republican candidates are pointing out his failures and what they would do differently which is what normally happens with both parties during an election year.

  • Anonymous

Are you Debbie Wasserman Schultz?  Accusing the opposition of using the tactics you have perfected?

  • Anonymous

Dream on.  BTW, what do you know about that Obama staffer in Iowa that was just arrested for identity theft that was attempting to take out Iowa’s Secretary of State?  Know anything about that national Sec of State project the dems embarked on?

  • Anonymous

No, that’s a Republican thing. Is that you, Mark Foley? You should know that I’m hetero and over 18, if so.

  • Anonymous

I’m frequently wrong, Ceceila, so its OK to have hope in a republican win. But right now it does not look that promising.

  • WiddleBabyDanielson

Thank you for proving his point.

  • Cecelia

I know (and you’re not THAT frequently wrong).

  • Cecelia

I know (and you’re not THAT frequently wrong).

Actually, your screed is the most toxic rant I’ve seen for quite some time.  And, it appears to take on that DWS hypocrisy by accusing others of the type of hyperbolie you are using only, make sure what you toss out there is first and worse.  Pretty discusting assumptions.

  • WiddleBabyDanielson

But we do not see you pointing this out to the likes of Hannity, Limbaugh etc.

Have you ever said the words RNC tool?

  • WiddleBabyDanielson

    Finally you said it.

    They can’t control themselves, pity.

Have you called for Wasserman-Schultz to resign for continuously accusing the tea partiers of being the cause of the Gifford shooting and the deaths of her constiuents?  She’s still making that accusation a year after the event:

Funny.  Meanwhile those from your end of the political spectrum are breaking in to city hall to trash the place and burn flags.  Conservatives make their points with arguments based on logic, when liberals can’t win the arguments they first turn to demonizing then to violence.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08S4poMGvwA George Clueless

As campaign season approaches, Jake Tapper is coming home to team Obama.

  • Dee Smith

calling teaparty racist, terriorist, over and over by congressmen.congresswoman, and VP did we forget that. NOBODY in the media defended them.

You know, just when you think the gop have sunk as low in the cesspool as they can get, reince, or whatever his name is, that insipid, shallow little mindless wonder compares Obama to the captain that abandoned ship and let his passengers die. You can’t talk about facts, or give the benefits of the accomplishments, just hate, hate, and more hate.  It is beneath even the gop to have a little elf like reince denigrate the office of the president with his low-life comparisons.  If that is the best man you got to lead the party, I actually feel sorry for you.  What a mess this gop party is in. And don’t deny he did it, like you do about most things. . I was watching and I know what he said.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Theresa-Darklady-Reed/581698361 Theresa ‘Darklady’ Reed

Oh, those poor Republicans! Why wasn’t I thinking about them when I was wasting all that mental energy on some stupid Democrat who’d been shot in the brain by a crazy guy who also killed 6 other people?

You’re right. No one deserves pity so much as a member of the GOP.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Theresa-Darklady-Reed/581698361 Theresa ‘Darklady’ Reed

And it’s not like the President isn’t in constant and easy contact with DC. We have these things called telephones, cell phones, computers, automobiles, airplanes, trains… all kinds of ways for the president to stay on top of the situation… like he did when all the flooding hit the east coast.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Theresa-Darklady-Reed/581698361 Theresa ‘Darklady’ Reed

I don’t remember President Obama saying any of those things, so why is it ok to say things about him?

  • Anonymous

Then you certainly must be appalled by the members of your party that were able to collect themselves in order to point fingers and accuse innocent people of causing the carnage to happen.

No one deserves to be scorned more than the DNC.

  • Just some Blow Hard…

No but his actions and non actions lead to the death of (so-far) 17 people. No one (to my knowledge) has ever equated the Former Gov (Not sitting as WCinWI once said) the same way.

Also, it was, especially after in the Tea Party. It was championed by such people as Alan West.

  • Mari Johnson

I never thought I could find anyone who makes Steele look good but you are so correct.  Frankly with this chairman and Steele, whoever is our nominee, we need to warm them that they should watch out because little hope that the party establishment (establishment, hehehehe- a stretch there I know) could be counted on not to undo whatever the nominee says or does.  I mean if their lips are moving, better BEWARE!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_34VQ3NDNOFFUF6R7ALXY6O33S4 Cal

And the president serves no role in that. It’s up to Congress to pass budgets.

  • Anonymous

That’s because people with higher IQ’s support the policies of the democrats.

  • Anonymous

Your hatred messaging is what brings out the worst in people who are already a bit deranged.   Don’t deny that Gabby Gifford had been on tv prior to the incident asking that the rhetoric of the republicans be toned down.  It was at that time that Gabby pointed out Sarah Palin’s crosshairs and shooting language – reload and aim.  I can understand why her good friend would continue to blame the hatred coming from the “so-called” christians who are nothing but hypocrites.

  • Anonymous

So you’re comparing Jake to those 2??? I’ll agree. :)

  • Anonymous

I have no doubt in your voting. As for me… I don’t know if there is someone from either party I can stand. But back to my point.

    1. Do you feel Obama is a classless fool for his equal statement?

    2. Is Jake showing which party he favors with the addition of the hashtag?

  • AliveStillKickin

Liberals are such thin-skinned human debris.
I can just picture Cap’n Obammy and his crew of Occupier misfits sailing on the Jolly Reggie  and flying under the Oakland Raiders flag.
And Obammy locking his cabin boy, in his closet for some late night “partying”.
    OH, GOODY!!!!!

  • :)

Your nominee is Obama, Mari, so you need not worry what goes on with the primaries within the GOP….

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Claude-P-Antoine/1833259971 Claude P. Antoine

i agree with Maggy it was offensive…..come to think of it,  for the 4 years of his term has been nothing but disrespect coming from the republicans and i really would like to know if it was even possible for Obama to fix this country from the damage that was left by the Bush administration in 4 years?
