Kevin Eubanks Leaving Tonight Show (Eventually); John Melendez Out As Announcer

Jay Leno‘s longtime bandleader and sidekick Kevin Eubanks will be leaving the Tonight Show, but will still be with the show when it returns March 1.

This story went through several incarnations over the past 24 hours – but it now appears more changes are on the way.

The article that got the most attention was EXTRA‘s, which confirmed a report from K-EARTH101.com. But in the 2pmET hour on MSNBC, entertainment reporter Courtney Hazlett shot the story down, saying, “Kevin is happy, Jay is happy. They’ll be working together.”

And since it’s all under the NBCU umbrella, it sounded like the story was over. But later that day the story reemerged in several outlets, including the New York Times:

Mr. Eubanks has told colleagues on the show that he will definitely leave his post as leader of what will be a reconstituted “Tonight Show” band (after its brief run as the “Prime Time Band” on Mr. Leno’s 10 p.m. weeknight show) after an interim transition period starting March 1.

And there was a new NBC statement:

Kevin has expressed interest in pursuing personal touring and recording opportunities; however, he will be with the show when it returns.

While EXTRA floated Darius Rucker as a replacement (“Hootie” of Hootie and the Blowfish), while EW.com’s Ken Tucker is endorsing Randy Newman.

But that’s not all! James Hibberd is reporting John Melendez is ending his run as announcer, although staying on as writer. So pretty soon, there will be two new job openings. The new Tonight Show is shaping up to be more different from the old Tonight Show than The Jay Leno Show was.

And on that note – here’s the new Tonight Show logo circulating around the web today (one size fits all unfortunately so far). It’s dark, like the clouds above the new incarnation:

> Update: Variety’s Michael Schneider has more background on the logo.

Am I dreaming or is this a post on Mediate that actually doesn’t specifically aim to bash conservatives? How did this slip through? No editing today?

I know, right Tim? How the hell did this one slip through last week?

Come on Steve… don’t take it personally. You do a pretty fair job around here, and undoubtedly have noticed the plethora of left-wing Mediaite writers, who wear their bias on their sleeve, but then pretend like it doesn’t exist. Ready any Glynnis post on Beck… even when she says flat out that Beck’s point was stronger, she’ll still attack him with sarcasm and snark. And then take a look at how many, “This is what Maddow said last night,” posts there are, and try to find the significant media content… rather than just blatant show promotion.

Oh, and I think you’re spinning a bit about Glenn’s comments towards Mediaite. Undoubtedly other sites like Media Matters, KOS, etc. are also favorites of many right-wing commentators. They show where the attack is coming from, the spin put by “influential” (and I use that word loosely) liberal commentators. Proof? Take a look at how many left-wing commenters around here reference “Johnny Dollar’s Place.” They all snarl and throw venomous attacks that way, yet apparently they read it minute-by-minute. I have no doubt that the pendulum swings both ways.

Beck said sometimes Mediaite is fair… sometimes it’s not. I’d agree with that, although as someone who reads the site perhaps more frequently than Beck, I wouldn’t say the scales are exactly level either. There are far more anti-Beck posts, than pro- or non-descript posts… conversely, there are more pro-Maddow posts, than anti- or non-descript. It is what it is.

Not true – he said we’re fair, and sometimes we give him a hard time and sometimes we don’t.

And take a look at the whole Huffington/Beck back-and-forth, which Glynnis wrote. It’s not universal, that’s the point. We take it on a case-by-case basis.

Steve, can you honestly tell me that you believe Mediaite publishes the same number of kind or fair articles about Beck, as they do about Maddow?

I forget the subject of the OP, but…
@ImNotBlue: Why would one have to bash someone to be fair to another?

Yeah, we got a little tangential… but it started with the response/comment of one of the site’s editors, so it follows a bit.

@ImNotBlue: Why would one have to bash someone to be fair to another?

Good question. That’s why when I was stating my criticism, I didn’t say “bash versus praise,” I said “bash versus praise, or neutral.” You don’t have to bash someone else to show fairness, but consistent and frequent praise for one, with consistent and frequent attacks for the other, doesn’t represent fairness either.

Maddow is often talked about in glowing terms… her words are highlighted even when they contain nothing more than her political opinion, and aren’t particularly important or relevant to the news media landscape. Beck, on the other hand, is highlighted for doing something goofy… his words are ignored (unless they’re silly in some respect), and then mocked both by the editors, and then by so many of the posters. That’s not fairness… that advocacy and ideology masquerading as “unbiased” journalism. My point: we’re not falling for it.

@ImNotBlue: Of course, if one of the purposes of this site is to fill out their remaining blog quotas with show promotion, then they’re doing a good job on both counts.

I’m not one who would ordinarily watch Beck and I’m likely to agree with Maddow on far more issues, but due to the Beck clips here, I’m familiar with his work, I’ve seen segments on an almost daily basis and I’ll occasionally stop for a few minutes, if I flip by his television show. (I’ve yet to listen to his radio gig beyond the clips, though I have noticed the ads in the local paper. But it’s on AM, I’m never on AM and I like my community station)

While, let’s say that if this site were to hire a Rachel basher… Do you think those who rail against her in the comments would be more likely to watch her, if there were more negative Maddow posts, or do you think that her show might be better promoted by showing clips which might appeal to her natural audience involved?
