Killer Mike: ‘I’m Sorry’ My NRA Interview ‘Was Used as a Weapon’ Against Parkland Student Activists

Rapper and activist Killer Mike posted two videos on Twitter apologizing for an interview he did with the NRA, lamenting that it was used “as a weapon against” the Parkland, Florida students protesting gun violence.

The Run The Jewels rapper, real name Michael Render, faced some backlash for an interview he did with NRA TV that was released the day of the March For Our Lives — in which he criticized the school walk out held to protest gun violence.

Render has long been an outspoken political activist — he was a prominent Bernie Sanders surrogate during the 2016 election — and said in two videos posted Sunday night that he did the interview with NRA TV a week ago in order to start a conversation about black gun ownership.

“That interview was used a week later by NRA TV to disparage a very noble campaign that I actually support,” Render said, referring to the March For Our Lives.

“I’m sorry that an interview I did about a minority, black people in this country, and gun rights was used as a weapon against you guys,” he said to the Parkland students. “That was unfair to you and it was wrong, and it disparaged some very noble work you’re doing.”

In a second video, Render explained that his interview with the NRA “was supposed to be something that continued a conversation” about “African American gun ownership”:

“That’s all my interview was about. It was not in contrast to your march. It was done well a week before your march, it should never have been used in contrast to your march, and I think it’s wrong.”

“Keep organizing,” Render concluded. “I do support the march. And I support black people owning guns. It’s possible to do both.”
