This "man" is a trans gender person. "He" is a she and it's shameful that the newspaper she gave her career to prints this article without referring to her as the female she was. Tea Bags

I am so sorry to hear this sad news. This is a beautiful piece that you write. The end of your second to last paragraph, “…we all have to take some responsibility for that, by fighting a little harder for the kind of world that would have made it a little easier for him, and for her,” is something we should all think about. No one should suffer while simply living out there lives the way they are. We need to be a more accepting society. May Mike Penner/Christine Daniels rest in peace.

Very sad indeed, Penner/Daniels was an exceptional writer. As a former sportswriter in a small town, I always liked reading his stuff on the wire, and I marveled at his courage in facing this aspect of his personality with grace and dignity. God bless him and his family.
