David Vitter: Obama Is ‘Politically Motivated’ To Sweep Oil Disaster Under The Rug

video

Louisiana Senator David Vitter appeared yesterday on Fox News Sunday and made the rather striking claim that President Obama is effectively trying to conceal the BP Oil Disaster rather than focus on cleaning it up. When asked by host Chris Wallace if the White House was trying to “sweep it under the rug,” agreed that he believed that was Obama’s “political motivation.”

During the interview yesterday, Vitter claimed “I’m afraid he’s decided to deal with this issue, at least politically, by not coming back here at all and trying to move it off the front page rather than dealing with the situation forcefully,” Vitter later pointed out that that President Obama has not been to visit his state of Louisiana since the first week in June. Vitter added “It’s already been a huge job killer and if it continues six months or more it will kill more jobs here than the oil itself.”

The President returned yesterday from a weekend vacation in Maine, and the White House is likely to address new developments in the BP Oil Disaster, namely that the spill now appears to be capped, but that there many be other problems looming, in addition to the massive clean-up effort that awaits.

Politically motivated talking head offers an anecdote: is this news?

In any event, the idea that this catastrophe could be “swept under the rug” is humorous. This has been cultivated by decades of careless deregulation – yes, Democratic and Republican rules within the house and presidency alike. We should be adults as a nation and try to fix it, regardless of party, because at this point pretty much everyone is to blame.

Cathouse Vitter would have had more impact had he given this interview whislt wearing a diaper.

What an idiot!! David Vitter is politically motivated to make this Republican disaster Obama’s disaster. If shit for brains goes for $70 a barrel I want drilling rights to David Vitter’s head.

    Oh, hell – make it $10 a barrel – I’d still be a multi-billionaire.

No, this happened because of ineffective regulation enforcement, not a lack of regulation.

Whether you choose to pay attention to Vitter or not, it’s obvious the spill fits nicely into Der Leaders master plan.

  • MichelleF

Well this claim wouldn’t be so “shocking” to you libs if Mediaite had actually reported that the regime was blocking the media from the spill. It was one of those “tip’s” Colby told me to stop sending.

Oh Colby, I’ve thought about your latest email to me and decided against it, so consider me checked!!

Now they’re detaining photographers reporting on the BP-Obama oil spill disaster.
    MSNBC reported:

A photographer taking pictures of a BP refinery in Texas was detained by a BP security official, local police and a man who said he was from the Department of Homeland Security, according to ProPublica, a non-profit news organization in the U.S.
The photographer, Lance Rosenfield, said he was confronted by the officials shortly after arriving in Texas City, Texas, to work on a story that is part of an ongoing collaboration between PBS and ProPublica.
Rosenfield was released after officials looked through the pictures he had taken and took down his date of birth, Social Security number and other personal information, the photographer said. The information was turned over to the BP security guard who said this was standard procedure, ProPublica quoted Rosenfield as saying.
Rosenfield, a Texas-based freelance photographer, said he was followed by a BP employee after taking a picture on a public road near the refinery, and then cornered by two police cars at a gas station. The officials told Rosenfield they had the right to look at the pictures taken near the refinery and if he did not comply he would be “taken in,” the photographer said according to ProPublica.

    Via the Washington Examiner:

    Obama’s ‘Command-and-Control’ An Illusion: Who’s In Charge?
“Parish officials maintain that the federal government has not been in control since day one. In four separate interviews, senior-ranking Parish officials described how, until the President’s visit on May 28, 2010, BP was in charge. According to one official, “until two weeks ago [after the President’s May 28, 2010, visit], BP was in charge and the Coast Guard looked to them for direction.” Furthermore, “Coast Guard asks BP,” not vice-versa. When specifically asked to agree or disagree with the assertion that the federal government had been in control since day one, another official firmly disagreed. Mr. Nungesser told staff that “today, I can’t tell you who is in control,” and invited committee investigators to visit the command center to see for themselves.”
Resources Used as Bargaining Chip to Mute Criticism
“In some instances, it appears that equipment is provided simply to quiet public criticism. Mr. Nungesser, who has frequently appeared on local and national television, was apparently visited by two White House officials at his office on Fathers’ Day. According to Mr. Nungesser, the purpose of their visit was to find a way to keep him from calling attention to the lack of equipment. Specifically, they asked him, “What do we have to do to keep you off tv?” He simply replied, “give me what I need.” On another occasion, Placquemines Parish officials requested 20 skimmers at a town hall meeting held by the Coast Guard. According to Mr. Nungesser, “They gave us two skimmers to shut us up.” These accounts raise serious questions about whether the Administration is more concerned with fighting a public relations battle than combating the oil

So you dismiss the info Michelle posted?

  • The Real Royal King

I only question how appropriate it is to continuously copy and paste volumes of tangentially relevant new pieces on a site the purpose of which is to share commentary and reaction to media pieces. I don’t believe this is suppose to be some daily World News Wrap in the Compound W Gazette.

  • MichelleF

I find it funny Royal Race-Baiter, that you think we should only comment on what Mediaite deems to be an important story (ones that fit the liberal template) and not the ones it blatantly ignores.

  • BowenIsland

TRRK are you really any different, or is there really anything that seperates or distinguishes you from ,say , Iris ?

  • The Real Royal King

I’m sure Iris is far more attractive.

I wouldn’t begin to guess about ideology. We liberals tend not to be easily characterized or classified, as it the nature of liberalism. Among us, there is probably a greater divergence of views than there is between classic liberalism and classic conservatism.

I have a theory as to pathology, and you are not as far apart as you may think.

  • Iris

You RW’ers just love these sick perverted hypocrites and this now has the nerve to say someone else is sweeping something under the rug, If he was so open and honest maybe he wouldn’t have to use prostitutes to change his diaper.

At issue was the 2005 Energy Policy Act — the largest energy bill in years. The committee chairman, Rep. Joe L. Barton (R- Texas), a friend of the industry, had saved some big issues for the end: billions of dollars in tax and royalty relief to encourage drilling for oil and gas in the Gulf of Mexico and other offshore areas. There was even a $50-million annual earmark to support technical research for the industry.

    ***
The royalty waiver program was established by Congress in 1995, when oil was selling for about $18 a barrel and drilling in deep water was seen as unprofitable without a subsidy. Today, oil sells for about $70 a barrel, but the subsidy continues.
The Government Accountability Office estimates that the deep-water waiver program could cost the Treasury $55 billion or more in lost revenue over the life of the leases, depending on the price of oil and gas and the performances of the wells.
    ***
Oil companies won a lawsuit last year requiring the government to pay back $2.1 billion in royalties from previous years, including about $240 million to BP.

  • jimw1016

Please allow me to also cut and paste. Also please notice the name Senator and ever so apologizing Joe Barton. Also notice the year 2005. Please notice Barton was instrumental in introducing legislation that allowed big oil, who happen to have boasted record revenues recently, to sue the US for $2.1 billion in back royalties, of which $241 million went to BP. Try explaining that away? And finally, the subsidy continues??? WTF?

  • jimw1016

Vitter? Who truly wants to hear what this piece of crap has to say?

  • murphy0071

Obama has no reason to sweep BP disaster under the rug. The right wing who said he took money from BP are liars and themselves support every type of lack of regulation in the world and called Obama’s set aside of 20 B$ a “slush fund.” Listen to Palin and the other ditzes tell us lie after lie. The right wing of American Politics is the most vicious, pitiful, and painful part of American Politics. They would lie about the time of day with an atomic clock standing in front of them.

  • jrcmi

They should put Vitter’s mug shot next to the dictionary entry for “oily.”

Obama had the misfortune to enter the White House immediately after what was arguably the most corrupt administration in history. His guys knew this and should have tried harder to weed out the leftover crooks in the Interior Dept. He tried to appease the dimbulb drill-baby-drill contingent by partially lifting the offshore drilling moratorium – originally imposed by “St. Ronald” Reagan.

The right rewarded his efforts by blaming HIM for the BP disaster, even though it was a direct result of Darth Cheney’s collusion with his all-too-close friends in Big Oil. They had a cozy little secret meeting mere days into Bush’s first term, during which they apparently divvied up the oil fields in Iraq. Bush hadn’t started the war yet, but hoped to HAVE one, as he told his autobiographer.

Big Oil’s and Boss Cheney’s lust for Iraqi oil provided more than enough incentive to invade Iraq – even thought that country had nothing to do with 9/11.

Cheney had been CEO of Halliburton, in which he continued to own stock and from which he received millions in dividends while in office – a clear conflict of interest. Halliburton was working on the BP rig at the time of the disaster and was directly involved in it.

Q: “What comes between David Vitter and his prostitutes?”

    A: “Depends.”
