15-year-old Tareq Abu Khudair, an American who was allegedly beaten by Israeli border patrol this weekend described the attack to NBC News on Monday, and mourned his cousin, who was found burned alive last week after an apparent abduction.
Khudair said he remembered being punched by the officers before going unconscious; he awoke later in the hospital. He also said he had seen the video that has emerged of the beating. “I was like — there’s just a kid watching what’s going on,” he said. “How can you just go over there and brutally beat him like that?”
The beating took place amid clashes between protestors and police, though the boy and his family said he was merely observing the protests.
Khudair is the second cousin of a Palestinian teen who was burned to death in what is believed to be a revenge killing for the abduction and murder of three Israeli teens. Khudair said he had been with his cousin the day he was abducted.
“I was just with my cousin and I still remember his voice,” Khudair said. “I still can’t believe he’s dead. I feel like he just went somewhere and he’s still going to come back. I don’t know what to say…I feel some part was taken away from my life.”
