Texas Governor Rick Perry Assays Weak GOP Candidates, Thinks ‘I Can Do This’

Add Texas governor Rick Perry‘s name to the growing list of potential GOP candidates. Perry, who recently shared his views regarding the Obama administration’s take on border security, had previously insisted he had no interest in running for president, but, evidently, political associates have begun testing the waters and gauging interest on his behalf now that he’s noted a “vacuum” in the race. Either way, Perry’s aides insist that he would not throw his hat into the race until after the state’s legislative session comes to an end at the end of this month.

But, if his intent is there, he’s yet to make it widely known. In an email to RealClearPolitics, Dave Carney, a political strategist who is currently working on Newt Gingrich’s presidential bid, said this is all news to him:

The Governor has not called anyone about running for POTUS. I’d like to know of one person who says they received such a call. He is calling raising funds for the Republican Governors Association, of which he currently serves as chair.

Perry could very well appear to Tea Party voters and the Republican base with his signature “tough talking”and general wariness where DC is concerned, but – as RCP notes – Perry could see competition in a similar charismatic, “larger than life” political figure: his former supporter, Sarah Palin.

538′s Nate Silver, for one, thinks Perry would at least have an advantage in the South:

Now. Will New Jersey’s Chris Christie also change his mind after taking a closer look at the playing field?

So the guy who talked about seceding from the Union now wants to run it? Good luck with that Perry.

As with ALL of the GOP perspectives, he’d be tons better than Obama.

Agreed. But I’d vote for Elmer Fudd over 0bama at this point.

    Because you are dumb…that’s why.

I got inside word at Easter that Perry was extremely motivated to run. After seeing Barbour, Huckabee, and Trump decide not to run because they didn’t feel it I could see Perry running because he did feel he could win it… in his “gut”, ‘heart”, and “head”.

BobbiThe RoyalVanRealKing , happily ! Tollhouse Cookie Perry will never run . He hasn’ t completed the standard 14 year term here in el estado de Texas .

  • Arch

I’m gonna go ahead and call this Not Real. Perry is just raising his profile. It worked so well for Trump (if you don’t count, you know… viewers.)

  • Bill Huggins

Stay in Texas, leave us Americans alone.

“Perry would at least have an advantage in the South”

Wow, if a GOP candidate carried the South, there’s no way they could lose.

  • Rescuedog

Oh God, no. No no no no no. No.

Governor Goodhair is a joke. And I say this as a lifelong Republican who voted for him twice. It’s not his politics or his policies, most of which I (and most Texas voters) generally agree with. It’s that he’s icky, smarmy, phony, robotic and gross. He’s a conservative version of John Edwards or John Kerry, at least in terms of his smarminess. And he signed a bill forcing students to recite something called the Texas Pledge of Allegiance (complete with some sort of weird mandatory salute), which a few clowns in the Legislature invented and then dared their colleagues to vote against.

No one in this state really likes or respects him, but we keep voting for him because he’s the only Republican on the ballot. He is terrible. Trust me.

Something tells me America is not ready for another governor from Texas. Just a thought.

  • Zandandido

I really, really hope he runs. Him and Mitch Daniels of Indiana. Perfectly match. Daniels/Perry or Perry/Daniels. Only thing better would be Chris Christie.

How awesome would it be to see The Real Royal King in Austin ‘s face , if Obama was beat by his own Conservative Texas Guv ?

    F*cking Awesome .

  • mediadoubt

Here’s the sad thing. Tailor’s dummy Perry makes GWB look like a frakkin’ genius, but he’d *still* elevate the quality of the current ‘Lican field if he entered the race.

And he’d still get his ass handed to him by Obama.
