very good article, i was researching this subject and your article is prob the best i found on it

but as a new Twitter user, i can tell you that it’s very jarring to see what is in the Trending Topics and the 1000s and 1000s of responses that are under each one

i guess it’s a feeling of “otherness” that we in the majority don’t always have, and it makes us feel uncomfortable

there also is the fact that the responses themselves, while often very funny do totally perpetuate “ghetto” stereotypes …

The post just struck me as classic Choire verbal masturbation. He can be a surpassingly good writer. But like many surpassingly good writers, he likes the sound of the words buzzing about in his brain a little too much, and reveals it with semi-stoned dumbassery like the post in question.

And I keep telling myself that one day I’ll understand why anyone other than Nick Douglas thinks Nick Douglas is funny. So far, I’m up against a wall, though. Still, he is a helluva huckster – would that I could earn all that scratch from cutting and pasting tweets that actually are funny by other people into a book. He may be perplexingly unfunny for someone who seems to define himself in part as a humorist, but Nick is damn sure a good salesman.

I hope you can see that there is a big difference between your example of a joke about a “black person,” and theawl’s post that dissects the Twitter feeds of “black people.”

What is offensive is the idea that a person can’t make observations about what they see around them if the people involved are a “minority.” Talk about fetishistic and othering. “You can’t make *that* joke! It’s about a (whisper) black person!”

I’m really honored to have my theory on race and technology quoted from my personal blog, but I stress that this is a blog where I write *half-baked scraps of ideas*.
