President Trump met today with North Korean envoy Kim Yong Chol, who delivered a letter from Kim Jong Un himself.
The President spoke to reporters after the meeting ended (video above, via ABC), and said it was nice and “very interesting.”
He also remarked, “Oh, would you like to see what’s in that letter… At some point, it may be appropriate––I’ll be able to give it to you maybe.”
But minutes later, when asked about the letter again, the President said he hasn’t read it yet (video via C-SPAN):

“I haven’t seen the letter yet. I purposely didn’t open the letter. I haven’t opened it. I didn’t open it in front of the director. I said, ‘Would you want me to open it?’ He said, ‘You can read it later.’ I may be in for a big surprise, folks.”
Needless to say, people were a little taken aback by that:

Trump calls Kim Jong Un’s letter to him a “very interesting letter.” Then, after a few minutes, says he hasn’t opened it yet, and that he could be in for a “big surprise.”

Trump hasn’t read the letter from Kim. Reports indicate that Kim’s letter was “fairly basic” and contained no promises. https://t.co/4XibLgV86g Pyongyang just wants the summit. And Trump, sight unseen, has agreed. https://t.co/Fk1Q7wzWR0

Wait a second — Trump says he hasn’t opened or read the letter yet from Kim Jong Un, adding that he may be in for a surprise when he does in fact read it. He said moments ago that the letter “was a very nice letter.”

The letter intrigued him–the heavy bond of the envelope, the quality of the hand lettered address, a heft that bespoke several pages–but not so much that he wanted to open and read it. First, let’s go talk to reporters about its characteristics as a thing, he thought. https://t.co/ABUdkOb3Sq

President Trump one minute: “This was a meeting where a letter was given to me by Kim Jong Un, and that letter was a very nice letter.”
President Trump a few minutes later: I haven’t read the letter yet.
