Why did the administration release inaccurate info in the first place? Why not just wait until it could be completely reviewed and double-checked? The White House response takes nothing away from the very good reporting by the AP. In fact, it gives the AP and other media an additional story to report regarding the incompetence of those responsible for accounting for the billions of taxpayer dollars being handed out as part of the stimulus.

I agree AP's reporting on this is solid. It's exactly the type of information the public should expect from our media watchdogs.

On the other hand, I don't fault the administration for responding promptly to offer their take. The reporting of the last two administrations was typified by salacious, misleading and inaccurate reporting of claims made by partisan sources; whether giving voice to daily attacks against Clinton or giving a pass to Bush so as not make Rove's enemies list.

The media in general has much to account for and much improvement to make. Even if this case isn't an example of it, it doesn't mean Obama and the public needn't be vigilant
