Who is Kanellos, the Amazing Greek Protesting Dog?

As the riots in Greece over the government’s austerity plan rage on, some news outlets our reporting a surprisingly light side to the violent proceedings. Apparently, a dog named Kanellos has somehow managed to show up in the middle of a number of protests right as reporters were taking pictures. The Guardian noticed the phenomenon and posted a pretty amazing collection of Kanellos photos.

In The Guardian photo collection, they claim that Kanellos has shown up at “nearly every” political demonstration in the past two years. Clearly, Kanellos (or his owners) hold firm in their ideals. This Greek piece discusses the amazing dog but seems a little more surprised that western news outlets are that impressed with a canine’s exploits when there is serious political strife going on. As media watch dogs we have to agree. This is a serious news story that has repercussions for the entire planet and it’s silly to be focussing on someone’s pet. However, as human beings, we have to say, “OMG! LOOK AT THE ADORABLE DOG!”

Here are a few photos of Kanellos. Check out The Guardian for the rest.

this is the greatest story of recent history. Kanellos the anarchist hero dog! I have already joined his facebook page and have sent out his youtube tribute videos to my truest friends.

i would proudly man the barricades with a brave pooch like him. Kanellos has no fear, he ignoresd the water cannons and stares down the riot police with a dignigied, furry stoicism. If I lived in Greece i would be right with him.

If anything happens to this dog, if he gets killed or injured by the government forces – Id bet the Prime Minister and his cabinet would have to resign or they would be burned out of office. Hell, if the government hurt Kanellos – I met feel driven to set their embassy here in DC on fire myself.

Long Live Kanellos the Greek protest dog!
