I like the idea of hiring Taibbi, simply because he has a muckracking style that would stand out on the pages of The Times. I don't expect to see "fuck" in a Sunday Times issue any time soon, but the attitude that inspires him to use it would be welcome. This isn't to suggest he's perfect, but he seems right more often than not and, because he isn't as subdued as the other writers (and I don't mean that as a criticism either way), he'd have people talking. At the very least, that's half the battle in gaining readers.

I'm not sure if any of the others are tied up for the time being, but they are all interesting suggestions. For a few more, why not look at some of the columnists for the Financial Times? Who knows if they'd leave, but the paper would gain instant credibility with a lot of people (Brad DeLong comes to mind, among others) by hiring someone like Gillian Tett or Christia Freeland (sp?).

Or, for a more unusual strategy, depending on how big his salary was, why not divide it up, hire a few unknowns, and get more coverage for a smaller price? I'm not suggesting that they hire people off the street, but if there are a few people who have demonstrated smarts and talent but are writing for lesser known venues, why not try them out? Most of them would be thrilled to write for a big time publication like The Times.
