Wow, I have to disagree with you, too, Mr. Drapeau. Not only does this piece update Hirschorn's (as Rachel points out), it also fleshes much out. How many other pieces do you see out here on the Interwebs these days with such richly rendered quotes and arguments? It's a lesson for all those (especially recently) who have forgotten how to give attribution and oh yeah, ADD to it.

I totally disagree! My favorite thing about Jim's piece is how he brings Fallows' piece from 1991 back to the present - with the Stengel quote, no less. It also makes that great byline point, as well as notes how it uses stringers. Hirschorn's piece makes its own points, and Jim credits and attributes as such, but it's old - it went to press before the new redesigned version of Newsweek even came out. I've read both of them; I prefer Jim's.

Anyone who read Michael Hirschorn's piece did not need to read this one.

And in the months to come, many of these same magazines will not just envy the Economist's cache' and style, but they will seek to replicate the Economist Intelligence Unit -- essentially the Economist consulting firm -- which serves as a huge source of revenue for the Economist.
