Paul Krugman Calls For A More Partisan Obama: ‘Let’s Not Be Civil’

Liberal columnist for The New York Times and persistent critic of President Obama, Paul Krugman, liked the passion he saw in Obama last week on the deficit battle and wants the rhetoric flame turned up even higher. In a column titled “Let’s Not Be Civil,” Krugman unapologetically lays out the case why Obama should not seek consensus with Republicans and should instead vigorously defend his vision for America while attacking the Republican proposal without restraint.

Krugman argues:

The point is that the two parties don’t just live in different moral universes, they also live in different intellectual universes, with Republicans in particular having a stable of supposed experts who reliably endorse whatever they propose. . . . So let’s not be civil. Instead, let’s have a frank discussion of our differences. In particular, if Democrats believe that Republicans are talking cruel nonsense, they should say so — and take their case to the voters.

Krugman believes it’s a bad and “undemocratic idea” if Obama chooses to treat his opponents with respect by restraining his criticism and attempting to work out a bipartisan compromise. Instead, he wants the election of 2012 to be a clear choice between completely different visions. It seems Krugman is eager and ready for a heated debate, and with an invitation for all parties to take the gloves off, this political fight over the budget which just got started is likely to get ugly.

Is this the same Paul Krugman who said that Sarah Palin may be responsible for Jared Loughner’s rampage even if he wasn’t directly inspired by her words by virtue of the fact that she created a “toxic atmosphere” or some such nonsense? By his own logic (I use the word loosely), does this mean he is now stealthily calling for the assassination of Republican politicians?

    Paul Krugman says:
“The point is that the two parties don’t just live in different moral universes, they also live in different intellectual universes, with Republicans in particular having a stable of supposed experts who reliably endorse whatever they propose.”

If this is true Paul, then why has Obama signed the tax extensions he said he never would, Patriot Act, More war, Debt, Deficits, bailout of Wall Street, Debt Ceiling………

  • tgk

why Obama should not seek consensus with Republicans and should instead vigorously defend his vision for America while attacking the Republican proposal without restraint.

So far it seems that the result has been a 41% approval rating Paul. Because this president has not adopted a civil tone yet as far as addressing republicans goes.

This is the same @SS that along with his friends blamed mass murder and the shooting of a house member on Sarah Palin and others on the right. Shows what we all knew at the time… it was a lie, they knew it was a lie, and it was pure naked politics at it’s worst. Paul saw a political opportunity to score partisan points and he sold his soul and took it. Now we have the proof.

  • skyfet

Too late, the GOP never accepted that message. Others said it’s against the st, they want any rhetorics, violent or coarse, because the 1st covered it.

  • perceptorii

But wait a minute. Didn’t Krugman call for Republicans to be more civil back in January? And now he says that Democrats should not be civil. So Republicans need to be civil and Democrats should not be civil. Doesn’t this suggest that Krugman is an unprincipled partisan hack? I know, that revelation is so very SHOCKING.

  • The Lantern of Truth

King Barry ( I Won ) could never be partisan .

  • Jax_n_Jill

When did civility start? I must of missed that minute….hmmm

  • greg454

I call for KKKrugman to be KKKilled or for him to get fired.

KKKrugman is a partisan hack, everytime I see his ugly face I feel like pukkking.

Screw you, KKKrugman! May you rot in hell for all you’ve done!

Let’s all play a game of “Who Wrote This?”

    January 8, 2011, 3:22 PM
    Assassination Attempt In Arizona
A Democratic Congresswoman has been shot in the head; another dozen were also shot.

We don’t have proof yet that this was political, but the odds are that it was. She’s been the target of violence before. And for those wondering why a Blue Dog Democrat, the kind Republicans might be able to work with, might be a target, the answer is that she’s a Democrat who survived what was otherwise a GOP sweep in Arizona, precisely because the Republicans nominated a Tea Party activist. (Her father says that “the whole Tea Party” was her enemy.) And yes, she was on Sarah Palin’s infamous “crosshairs” list.

Just yesterday, Ezra Klein remarked that opposition to health reform was getting scary. Actually, it’s been scary for quite a while, in a way that already reminded many of us of the climate that preceded the Oklahoma City bombing.

You know that Republicans will yell about the evils of partisanship whenever anyone tries to make a connection between the rhetoric of Beck, Limbaugh, etc. and the violence I fear we’re going to see in the months and years ahead. But violent acts are what happen when you create a climate of hate. And it’s long past time for the GOP’s leaders to take a stand against the hate-mongers.

Update: I see that Sarah Palin has called the shooting “tragic”. OK, a bit of history: right-wingers went wild over anyone who called 9/11 a tragedy, insisting that it wasn’t a tragedy, it was an atrocity.

Update: I’m going to take down comments on this one; they would need a lot of moderating, because the crazies are coming out in force, and it’s all too likely to turn into a flame war.

Krugman is cracking up. All his hopes and dreams in Obama’s Keynesian economics are being mugged by reality, and it ain’t pretty.

    Just wait until 2012….

“Seriously, dude? Way over the line.”

—Yeah, it was a little bit over the line. I agree. So let me correct the statement:

I call for KKKrugman to KKKrap his pants by accident in front of his boss.

There, now it’s a nicer statement.

Look, we’re dealing with liberals here. You can’t expect them to remember what they said. And even if you can get them to acknowledge it, they will say the circumstances changed.

This liberalism is both toxic and unsustainable. (I love using a variant of the word “sustainable”, because the liberals are always telling us that their ideas are sustainable – which is a lie of course.)

  • Davo

Krugman is bad…….but he’s not THAT bad. Krugman, Weiner, Schumer, and the rest of the anti-Americans must act like absurd extremists so as to make Hussein look reasonable. Hussein needs to hide his radical position and appear as a fair-minded centerist by comparison in attempt to fake out the independents.

I agree. Many of them are cracking up. We’re making it harder and harder for them to keep their “Liberal Courage.”

“Liberal Courage” is knowingly doing the wrong thing. It takes a certain courage to keep doing things that end up hurting people.

What is happening is we keep pointing out how their ideas hurt people and, at some level, it does get to some of them.

Don’t expect them to reverse course, however. This pain is part of process of forcing everything to be “equal”. In other words, when the middle class is destroyed and most people are truly poor, the liberals will be able to cam down a bit.

It also dovetails into when Obama talks about “sacrifice” and “hope”. We are all to sacrifice our wealth, assets, part of our salaries, happiness, etc. so we all can be “equal.”

And when Obama talks about hope, what he means is that we are to hope that things don’t get too bad.

SO Krugman is cracking up because he’s smart enough to see the hopelessness and despair that liberalism creates and fosters, but he can’t do anything about it because it would mean going against the liberal belief system.

  • joe7

I kind of liked Paul. But he has gradually plummeted off the deep end

You might be giving the anti-Americans too much credit. Maybe they’re just evil lunkheads missing part of their brains. I find it hard to salute torture as “courage.” “Gall” might be a better term.

Left wingers see themselves as above the standards they set for everyone else, so this is not at all surprising. Krugman knows Democrats can be “uncivil” and the media will cover for them like they always have. The idea that Democrats have EVER been civil is laughable in itself.

What a dumb comment. You obviously did not read Krugman’s column before you posted. How pathetic!

No. There is a difference between a dumb comment and one that makes you sad and/or angry because it hits too close to home. A dumb comment is saying that white Americans don’t deserve what they have. Paul Krugman blamed the shooting of Gabby Giffords on incivility by conservatives, and now he champions incivility by progressives. If my pointing this out makes him look like a hypocrite, well, that’s only because he is a huge one.

I’ve noticed that Paul krugman is hated by the rightwingers as much, if not even more than they hate Obama. very interesting… Krugman is a world class economist and winner of a Nobel Prize which, of course, makes him a jerk in rightwinger’s eyes. However, if he had been Bush’s economic advisor (an absurd thought!) we would never have had this recession.
My Dr.Freud head is beginning to realize why there’s so much hatred generated to these two liberal. In Obama’s case, it’s not just racism that’s in operation, it’s just that Obama is really a very bright guy who has our best interests at heart more than any rightwinger can understand. His intellect and grasp of reality makes it very difficult for you to support some of the very stupid and foolish things the right is putting forth as remedies for our ailing economy. Yes, jealousy and envy are at work here, too.
Krugman isn’t always right, but he’s more on the money than most any economist I can think of. He won his Nobel prize for work he did to make global capitalism more efficient. You should read more rather than letting other people cherry pick his more controversial, but always interesting opinions. I’m always hoping that some of the rightwingers on this website could open their eyes and smell the roses, but all I’ll get is your hatred, hostility and thumbs down!

  • Agent X

Poor Paul…doesn’t he know it’s a fine line between being a brown-noser and a chithead? Unfortunately, he crossed that line years ago. Forget about it Paulie….there is no job for you in the Obama administration. You can stop carrying water for OweBama now. It’s rather embarassing to read your drivel these days. Well at least both of you still have nobel prizes you don’t deserve…so you’ll always have that in common.

  • greg454

“Krugman is a world class economist and winner of a Nobel Prize which, of course, makes him a jerk in rightwinger’s eyes”

The Nobel prize means nothing anymore, Obama got one, remember? As for “world class economist,” well, I happen to like Milton Friedman and even Keyes way better than KKKrugman.

Besides, world-class economist generally understand that Marxism is bad, yet what is Krugman? A Marxist in liberal clothing. Well, I don’t buy it, neither should you.

Mr. Krugman is a blithering crass idiot, and those who applaud this hypocritical myopic spoiled panderer of the left wing., needs to get their head examined.

His face, words and style are repugnant, uncivil, arrogant, biased and generally devoid of balanced perspectives.

Obviously he fits right in with the New York Slimes.

  • mediadoubt

Notwithstanding a few glossolalic posters above, Krugman is articulate, measured, thoughtful, and — most importantly — correct. (As well as being a damn sight smarter than the babblers.)

Many supporters of our President have wanted him to take a tougher stand. He came into office apparently committed to forging bipartisan consensus. Unfortunately, the right rejects consensus as if it were plague spores. The time has passed to attempt forging agreement with cynical, hypocritical zealots who are totally in the pockets of their plutocratic and christianist masters.

The rest of us — the majority — want Obama to (firmly and in an adult manner) hold his ground. It’s what we elected him to do and it’s what majorities on every major policy area want him to do.

  • BOMBSHELL

Krugman is a Keynesian Kommunist. Me and my Daddy LIKE Kommunists. I just want someone to buy me a kitten.

Wow! I just can’t get enough of super educated liberal enlightenment… glad I found this Krugmen article. I just wish that Mr. Krugman would help me understand just a little more about the things that concern me regarding what is happening in our country. Maybe Mr. Krugman will soon address the Fascist State developing before my eyes. Don’t be confused, fascism is not a product of the far right, rather it is the state control of private enterprise, far from a conservative value. So please help me here, Obamacare, hmmm stare control of private hospitals and insurance companies, not to mention the wavier system which allows the chosen few to not be burdened by the additional expenses that all other corporations have to bear. The Chrysler and GM bailouts, keeping the unions whole while devastating non union workers and stockholders. Allowing GM and Chrysler to pass prior losses through the bankruptcies to the tune of 25 to 30 billion dollars, something never before allowed in bankruptcy law… but again, this is for the unions.. so when they repay their debt, don’t be fooled they repaid us with our own tax dollars that we should have collected had this not been done. The Swiss cheese that we call our tax codes that allows companies of favor such as GE to pay $9 in taxes… as long as their corporation proceeds in the direction that our government has charted for them. It is so ridiculous that the Dems and Republicans argue over tax breaks for the oil companies… the truth of the matter is that the oil company tax breaks are nothing other than the same tax breaks that any other manufacturer receives, Calling out the Oil companies does however make for a better battle cry come election time. If you want to see an end to special interest as our president promised, then get rid of the special tax considerations for all businesses, give the lobbyist nothing to lobby for! Stop all the grant funding whose aim it is to develop areas of our economy that has not developed because it is not economical to do so! Lastly put a stop to the unholy alliance between the government and the banks… Honestly, if you take off the blinders and really look around it is hard to not see that Fascism here and doing quite well.. Maybe Mr. Krugman might spend some time on this.
