The day after President Obama announced the capture and killing of Osama bin Laden news broke that the lifeless body of the al Qaeda leader was buried at sea in a manner that was consistent with Islamic tradition. Yesterday, the president sat down with 60 Minutes correspondent Steve Kroft for an exclusive and one time discussion of the bin Laden affair, and a new segment has been released by CBS in which Obama discusses the burial at sea.

President Obama taped an interview yesterday to air on 60 Minutes Sunday, but a preview of his exchange with Steve Kroft demonstrates a confident President who is certain about his decision not to release the photos of Osama bin Laden‘s dead body.

CBS News is reporting that during a sit down interview for 60 Minutes, President Barack Obama revealed to Steve Kroft his decision to not release photos of a dead Osama bin Laden. Republican House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers reportedly said “the risk of release outweigh the benefits” before adding that there was concern over how the image would be viewed as a “trophy” and inflame public opinion in the Middle East.

CBS News has announced President Obama will give his “first and only” interview about the capture and killing of Osama bin Laden to Steve Kroft of 60 Minutes. Kroft has interviewed Mr. Obama ten times in the past, most recently last November.

CBS says the interview will be conducted tomorrow at the White House, and aired this Sunday, one week after the dramatic raid that sent U.S. forces into Pakistan and into a dramatic firefight inside bin Laden’s compound, where the al Qaeda leader was shot twice and killed:

In a deeply personal and moving segment that aired on 60 Minutes Sunday night, CBS News correspondent Lara Logan claimed that she thought she was going to die that night in Tahrir Square. “For an extended period of time, they raped me with their hands,” Logan showed great personal courage in sharing specific details, and recovering from an attack that she claims lasted 40 minutes and involved 200 to 300 men.

After the recent investigation by 60 Minutes potentially exposed many fabrications made by Greg Mortenson in the book he co-authored Three Cups of Tea, the embattled author also now faces a health scare. Mortenson was hospitalized for heart surgery and canceled a scheduled speaking appearance in Massachusetts.

Greg Mortenson is now discussing the recen, scathingt 60 Minutes report on him with none other than Outside magazine (one of only two publications Mortenson has elected to speak with in the wake of the 60 Minutes piece – the other being his local newspaper), and is essentially blaming David Oliver Relin, who co-authored and has joint copyright of , for any inconsistencies or embellishments in his books.

“You seem to be saying that most of it is BS,” says 60 Minutes’ Steve Kroft towards the end of a report on Greg Mortenson, summarizing the comments of one of the man’s critics. Mortenson is the writer and humanitarian whose inspirational books like the bestselling Three Cups of Coffee tell the story of his attempt to build schools in wartorn Pakistan and Afghanistan. The scathing segment begins with accusations that some of the books’ most heartwarming stories are made up and ends with a look at the schools that Mortenson’s Central Asia Institute non-profit claims to have made, finding many half-built, abandoned, or completely nonexistent.

CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric, whose contract is set to expire in June, may stay at the network as a correspondent for 60 Minutes, according to a report in the New York Post. The paper’s Michael Shain cites “network insiders” saying “an offer to become a regular correspondent for the prestigious Sunday night TV magazine is part of the package being offered Couric–if she’ll stay and do a projected daytime talk show for CBS.”

60 Minutes decided to have a little fun and show several “walk-offs” the show’s correspondents have had to deal with over the past 40 years.

Republican Senator Scott Brown revealed to 60 Minutes that he was the victim of sexual abuse as a child. In the extended interview last night with Lesley Stahl, Brown was asked whether he believes these revelations will be politically harmful to him in the future, to which he responded “whatever happens, happens.”

Sen. Scott Brown has a new book coming out soon entitled “Against All Odds.” In it, he will show a new side to a public persona mostly made up of “out of nowhere” victories and hunky magazine pictorials. This new side will include him delving into a challenging childhood that, he now explains, included horrendous abuse at the hands of stepfathers as well as a camp counselor. Brown will give details of this in an upcoming 60 Minutes interview, some of which is now available online.

Governor Ed Rendell was interviewed by Lesley Stahl on 60 Minutes and he demonstrated his apparently “infamous temper” over a harmless question about casino gambling. Stahl asked whether it was a good idea for Pennsylvania to legalize gambling and promote it, yet Rendell tried to argue gamblers will find a way to gamble no matter what.

On today’s Morning Joe, host Joe Scarborough revealed he’s not the only MSNBC host who can no longer hide his emotions about a politician. After playing a clip of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s interview on 60 Minutes, Scarborough unabashedly declared that Christie “reduces me to a 14-year-old girl at a Beatles concert. He is so great!”

Newly-elected House Speaker John Boehner gave an extensive interview to CBS News’ 60 Minutes, and the way they teased the thing in promos, I’m surprised they didn’t do a mock-up of a Crying Game poster. In a 13 minute interview, was the crying the real takeaway? Sure, the guy has been known to squirt a few in the past (and been mercilessly mocked for it), but surely, there were more noteworthy things to focus on.

In a preview video of this Sunday’s 60 Minutes, Lesley Stahl asks Facebook wunderkind Mark Zuckerberg for his thoughts on The Social Network. Zuckerberg, who once told the media that he wouldn’t even bother watching Aaron Sorkin‘s depiction of Facebook’s inception, ended up taking all of his employees to see it with him. “I actually thought it was pretty fun,” he told Stahl. Yet he added, “There were hugely basic things that they got wrong too.” Girls, he claimed, were not his motivation for starting Facebook, citing that he already had a girlfriend at that point.

President Obama taped an interview with Steve Kroft for tonight’s 60 Minutes before departing for India. In it he tells Kroft that one of the reasons the voters have responded they way they they did on Tuesday was because his administration didn’t properly communicate (over about a gazillion interviews) what they were doing and that “leadership isn’t just legislation.”

Anderson Cooper returned to his slot as occasional 60 Minutes contributor this week, gaining rare access to award-winning rapper Eminem.

The Detroit native brought the CNN host around his former neighborhood, and taught him the proper way a person can in fact find a rhyme for “orange.”

Anderson Cooper is not a good rapper. He can’t even find a word that rhymes with “orange.” This the latest from his upcoming 60 Minutes interview with popular early-aughts rapper Eminem, who appears to be staging a comeback of sorts whereby he brags about reading the dictionary and mispronouncing words to fit them into his rhyme scheme.

The calendar may say the summer’s over, but that doesn’t mean we can’t all try to hold on to those lovely warm months. In Los Angeles, for instance, people are pretending it’s still July by suffering through a terrible heat wave. Meanwhile, the guests on Money Rocks are helping out by continuing to shriek at each other over that whole “Ground Zero Mosque” thing in a segment that got downright ugly.

It’s hard not to conclude that as far as forming opinions on the proposed Lower Manhattan mosque the horse has left the barn. Nevertheless, 60 Minutes waded in last night and attempted to explain that the so-called Ground Zero Mosque was actually going to be a multi-dimensional community center and noted something which has been lost in the subsequent din: the center was endorsed not only by the mayor and the borough president but the local community board who thought it would be a nice addition to a “seedy” part of town.

In 2008, an ailing Senator Ted Kennedy gave a speech at the Democratic National Convention that focused, in part, on the political issue closest to his heart: health care. “This is the cause of my life,” he said, adding that he hoped one day soon, “will break the old gridlock and guarantee that every American—north, south, east, west, young, old—will have decent, quality health care as a fundamental right and not a privilege.”

But according to former President Jimmy Carter, Kennedy himself is to blame for Americans’ lack of coverage.

Last February, 60 Minutes broadcast a story which was certain to make any American angry. They said that almost 9 years after the attacks on the World Trade Center, the site was still an empty pit. They showed video of a massive, empty construction site. A huge gaping wound in lower Manhattan. There was only one problem with the story. It wasn’t true.

BP Oil managing director Robert Dudley was making the Sunday rounds this morning attempting to explain what it is exactly that BP is doing to contain the oil spill now that the ‘top kill’ has ostensibly failed. Truth be told, watching Dudley during his various appearances one got the sense his role was less spokesperson than official punching bag: he took a lot of hits and offered very little in terms of response.
