The real star of Yankees baseball this season? New York City congressman Anthony Weiner. When ESPN tried to switch the start time of a nationally televised September 27th Yankees match-up with the Boston Red Sox, Weiner sent a letter to baseball commissioner Bud Selig requesting the game be moved to avoid conflicting with the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.

Never mind having the best record in baseball, Derek Jeter‘s .333 average or newbie Mark Teixeira‘s 101 RBIs — the real star of Yankees baseball this season is New York City congressman Anthony Weiner. When ESPN tried to switch the start time of a nationally televised September 27th Yankees match-up with the Boston Red Sox, Weiner sent a letter to baseball commissioner Bud Selig requesting the game be moved to avoid conflicting with the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.

The game was scheduled to start at 8pmET, but because the Day of Atonement begins that night at sundown, observant Jews would be forced to forfeit their tickets and miss ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball. Thanks to Weiner’s foresight the game will be reverted to a 1pmET first pitch, and those practicing Jews planning to attend the rivalry game can enjoy, as can those who root from home.

“Practicing your religion shouldn’t conflict with rooting for your home team,” Weiner said in a statement, probably knowing full well that this game has the potential to decide the division champion. And when the holiday begins that night, Yankees fans can repent for ever doubting the signings of free agents Teixeira and C.C. Sabathia.
