But is he presidential? This is a question that has been on the minds of the nation’s top political analysts and commentators since Cain’s surprising rise to the top of the GOP polls. Recent comments made by the former Godfather’s CEO have appeared to raise some collective eyebrows, in particular his recent claim that he’s a “leader not a reader.” Filling in as host of Daily Rundown, WaPo columnnist Chris Cillizza noticed how, intentionally or not, it seems like Cain’s comment was a reference to The Simpsons.

Cillizza’s core question to his panel was whether or not punchlines can ever be elected president (they can’t.) And while MSNBC detractors might see the following segment as just another example of a progressive cable news outlet hitting a conservative candidate, the issues raised by Cillizza and his panel, are completely and totally legit. The reference of Cain’s oversimplified rhetoric to a Simpsons parody is at once a great pull, and a horrifying comment on the state of today’s political discourse. Yesteryear’s satire is today’s reality?

Sidenote: it’s time to include Chris Cillizza in the list of growing talent at MSNBC. His interim hosting of Chuck Todd show is a pitch perfect example of how a print columnist can make a seamless transition to television. Cillizza exhibits smarts, humor and a relaxed nature that makes one think that he could/should have his own show on MSNBC in the next year.

The poll suggests that that less than 6 off 10 “Republicans and GOP-leaning independents see Palin in a favorable light,” throwing cold water on any speculation that Palin is the presumptive GOP nominee (though there is certainly plenty of time for public opinion to change.)

Palin has been somewhat coy about a potential bid for president in 2012, though many political analysts view her rather enormous media and publicity footprint — which has included speaking tours, a reality show, and tours to promote her best-selling books — as evidence of her aspirations to move into the White House.

It is true that Palin gets more buzz than nearly any other Republican political figure right now (evidenced by her position as the most powerful TV Pundit on Mediaite’s Power Grid) but not all of the buzz she has received has been positive. As the old Native American saying goes “the wind at the top of the totem pole blows a little harder,” and not all of Palin’s buzz has been good buzz. Which, it appears, may have be taking a toll on her political standing.

Writing for the Washington Post, Chris Cillizza and Jon Cohen report:

For the first time in Post-ABC News polling, fewer than six in 10 Republicans and GOP-leaning independents see Palin in a favorable light, down from a stratospheric 88 percent in the days after the 2008 Republican National Convention and 70 percent as recently as October.

In one sense, the poll still finds Palin near the top of a list of eight potential contenders for the GOP nomination. The former vice presidential candidate scores a 58 percent favorable rating, close to the 61 percent for former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee and 60 percent for former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, and better than the 55 percent that onetime House speaker Newt Gingrich (Ga.) received.

But Palin’s unfavorable numbers are significantly higher than they are for any of these possible competitors. Fully 37 percent of all Republicans and GOP-leaning independents now hold a negative view of her, a new high.

In another first, fewer than 50 percent of Republican-leaning independents — 47 percent — hold favorable views of Palin.

Palin hasn’t spoken about a possible presidential bid recently, but she has made the year 2012 a focus of her anti-Obama rhetoric, posting on her Facebook page that “it can’t come soon enough,” focusing on the White House’ “war on domestic oil and gas exploration and production.”

As long as Palin continues to participate in the political dialogue of the day, she will be likely be considered a presidential candidate. Though as these poll results show, her chances of getting elected (as of now) appear to be getting dimmer, not brighter.

While the segment airs in full this coming Sunday, Brown was lauded by many inside the beltway for bravely sharing this dark secret. This morning’s version of Washington Post‘s political blog The Fix led with that news, but seemed to want to score some juvenile humor points with what some will surely see as a remarkably insensitive headline.

The post, co-authored by Aaron Blake and Chris Cillizza, leads with yesterday’s report of Brown’s sexual abuse:

Massachusetts Republican Sen. Scott Brown’s new book is set to release on Monday, and in it are details of sexual abuse a young Brown suffered at the hands of camp counselor.

The bombshell revelation — combined with a “60 Minutes” profile set to air Sunday — reinsert Brown into the national political dialogue at a key juncture for him and will undoubtedly add to the political intrigue surrounding the senator.

The book is titled “Against All Odds.” But with Brown riding high in his home state and nary a Democrat yet running against him in 2012, you’ve got to wonder: is Brown an odds-on favorite for reelection?

See what they did there? They pegged a story on Brown’s reelection chances to his soon to be released book that just so happens to discuss how he was was abused as a kid. Its certainly possible that this was an inadvertent choice of words, but it seems more likely to be a tone deaf choice of words at best, particularly in light of Nir Rosen‘s recent fall from grace for his inappropriate “jokes” about the sexual abuse of Lara Logan at the hands of Egyptian demonstrators.

RNC Chief Administrative Officer Boyd Rutherford is quoted as telling Derek Flowers, a member of the RNC’s political team by email “We will not be able to pay off the vendors this week.”

Cillizza reports Flowers, who had previously told vendors he would stay on the job until every bill was paid, will instead be leaving his post at the RNC today.

Capitol Hill paper The Hill has previously written about the RNC’s spending problems, suggesting that so much money was spent in 2009 that the RNC was left “with its worst election-year cash flow this decade.”

The spending has played a key role in the future of RNC chair Michael Steele:

The RNC had $22.8 million in cash and no debt when Michael Steele was elected chairman at the end of January, but has since seen its cash on hand drop to less than $9 million at the end of November.

Over the previous five months, while governors’ battles were being waged in New Jersey and Virginia, the committee saw its cash reserves drop by a full $15 million. Through November, the committee spent more than $90 million last year, which is nearly $20 million more than the Democratic National Committee (DNC).

Tonight, while reflecting on the head-stomping incident at the Rand Paul event, Matthews said that “this is the kind of stuff we saw from hoodlums in the thirties in another country I will not mention.” Three guesses history buffs!

The head-stomping people also remind Matthews of Joe Miller‘s private security team up in Alaska who handcuffed the reporter to the chair. What is the deal with these people who are “supposed to be good old American Tea Partiers?” Morever: “When are these people going to start wearing uniforms…I mean it isn’t far from what we saw in the thirties where political parties started showing up in uniforms.”

Actually, I think we are still pretty far from the Tea Party (or any other political group in this country) doing anything to justify a Nazi comparison, how about, people in large crowds frequently act like idiots. Or as Chris Cillizza calmly notes, “at the end of campaigns passions get very inflamed and sometimes people act inappropriately.” Matthews remains unconvinced. Watch below.

Fortunately Colorado’s Democratic candidate for Governor, John Hickenlooper, is here to show us there’s an alternative. That alternative, it just so happens, is watching a middle-aged man take a shower. Don’t worry, it’s much better than it sounds.

The ad is, in fact, downright charming. In it, Hickenlooper muses that he must not be “a very good politician because [he] can’t stand negative ads.” He then claims that every time he sees one he feels like he needs to take a shower and, unfortunately, he sees them a lot. This is, of course, all played over footage of Hickenlooper, fully dressed, stepping in and out of the shower. The whole thing is kind of adorable, like watching Mr. Smith Goes to Washington right after a screening of In the Loop.

Still though, Chris Cillizza over at The Fix points out that one of the only reasons Hickenlooper was able to stick so closely to the high road was that he doesn’t have much of a chance of losing:

“While the ad is creative and effective, there are a few mitigating factors that suggest it may be tough for other ‘outsider’ candidates to copy it in their own races.

First and most importantly, the Colorado Republican Party has imploded in recent weeks.
Former Rep. Scott McInnis, long touted as the party’s strongest nominee, watched his political stock plummet in the wake of plagiarism charges. That left room for little known Dan Maes, himself struggling under campaign finance fine, to oust McInnis in the Aug. 10 primary.

With Maes as the nominee, it’s hard to imagine the Republican Governors Association spending any money on the race and it’s equally difficult to see Maes raising the sort of money on his own to compete with Hickenlooper.

That financial mismatch means that the race isn’t much of a race and Hickenlooper’s pledge of no negative ads is somewhat penalty-free. He gets the benefit of looking like a different sort of politician without running the risk of losing the race to a better funded — and better known — Republican who goes negative.”

Aw man, so Hickenlooper might not just be a really nice guy? Oh well. It’s still a pretty darn entertaining ad, even if it does give us concern that Hickenlooper may, in fact, be a never nude. Remember, there are dozens of them.

Yes, Axelrod is important, but let’s focus for a moment on Cox, who has indelibly made a mark on the White House Correspondents Dinner in one crucial way: It was she who dubbed it “NerdProm.” The WHCD was once jokingly referred to as “Prom” (a term I first heard from Politico’s Patrick Gavin, then at FishbowlDC)*, but last year on Twitter, Cox used the term and it caught on amongst members of the WH press corps (including, as I recall, well-read people like Jake Tapper, John Dickerson and Olivier Knox). Others outside the D.C. sphere soon picked it up (including me). 2009 was the first year that the WHCD had been properly Twittered (look at the adorable teensy showing in 2008!) – which meant that Twitter was the first place people were looking for their real-time WHCD news. Which meant that Twitter was leading the charge in setting tone and pushing mems. Which meant that those who were leaders on Twitter were the leaders in pushing those memes. Which brings us back to Ana Marie Cox, in whom resided a perfect storm of both Washington cool-kid cred and critical mass of Twitter followers.

While the #nerdprom hashtag was out in full force last year, it actually did not cross over into mainstream coverage all that much. I used it in the headline for my coverage at the Daily Beast (“Why The Nerd Prom Matters“) and Chris Cillizza used it on his WaPo blog, The Fix (“Twittering Nerd Prom“), but it was largely the province of the online-and-Twitter-savvy. Cut to this year, where there are now 33,800 Google hits for “nerdprom” and 17,500 for “Nerd Prom” – plus all sorts of headlines: “Real Nerds Skip Nerdprom‎” (New Republic); “Kim Kardashian plays chess at DC’s annual ‘nerd prom’‎” (Telegraph UK); “Rate The Celebrities from Nerd Prom!” (HuffPo) and, my personal favorite, this from the venerable WaPo “Reliable Source” column, veteran of many a WHCD: ““Nerd Prom” no longer: Celebrities steal spotlight from press, president, politicians, at White House Correspondents’ Dinner and after-parties.” From zero to being a “no longer” of a years-long tradition in 365 days flat. That’s quick work for a meme.

I can only find two places confirming that Cox started the #nerdprom meme: Dylan Stableford at The Wrap this year and Cillizza last year. I’m sure there are more, but it seemed worthwhile to get this important piece of WHCD history officially on the books.

It should be noted, btw, that Cox did not coin the actual phrase “Nerd Prom,” just applied it to the WHCD. “I think ‘nerdprom’ was coined to describe Comicon,” Cox wrote me in an email. “But I think I helped make WHCD into nerdprom east.”

Indeed it was, and indeed she did.

*A clarification on the usage of the term “Prom” for the WHCD: According to Washingtonian Magazine editor Garrett Graff,
Anne Schroeder was the first to
usen “prom” in reference to the WHCD, in the “Names & Faces” column in the Washington Post. Graff, who was then writing FishbowlDC, used it for the WHCD cateogory (see the exhaustive “Prom” list), first using it in April 2005.

**It must be noted: the phrase gained its own version of immortality a solid two decades before any of this, on Saturday Night Live with nerds-in-love Todd and Lisa, aka Bill Murray and Gilda Radner. The original “Nerd Prom” sketch is below.

So who did he screw more, the Democrats or the Republicans? And is this actually a first step towards a White House run?

Lately Congress has started to feel a bit like a game of Ten Little Indians: who’s next. Yesterday’s announcement from Indiana senator Evan Bayh (D) that he would be retiring, amazingly caught just about everyone off guard (and we mean everyone). Bayh, who at 54 is relatively young, is widely considered the only Democrat able to win Indiana (though this time around was expected to be tougher than in years past) and despite not quite making the VP cut in either 2004 or 2008 had a fairly rosy political future by any measure. So what gives?

Last night Chuck Todd told Chris Matthews (video below) that he thought Bayh has just recognized he had reached his career ceiling in the Senate and there was no where else to go, which strikes me as a bit of a weak argument especially considering all the accolades heaped on Ted Kennedy for his lifetime service to the Senate.

Bayh said in his statement yesterday that he “does not love Congress” (honesty? Either way, so much better than I want to spend more time with my family) and that “Congress is not operating as it should…There is too much partisanship and not enough progress — too much narrow ideology and not enough practical problem-solving. Even at a time of enormous challenge, the people’s business is not being done.” He also said that staying in the Senate is “not good enough” and that “I believe I can best contribute to society in another way.” Which sounds awfully similar to Sarah Palin’s remarks when she announced she would not finish out her term as Governor of Alaska. Is Bayh also considering an eventual White House run? By leaving now he’ll be detaching himself from all the nonsense and bad decisions currently dragging Congress down, which could make a run down the line (if not in 2012 than after that) that much easier an unfettered.

By leaving now he is also screwing the Democrats. Big time. Rachel Maddow seems to think that was part of “conserva-dem” Bayh’s plan: “the initial reaction inside the Beltway was that Bayh was giving the party he belonged to, but never seemed to like that much, one last sucker punch on his way out the door.” This is because today is the filing deadline for any Dem who wants to run in the Democratic Senate primary and none of the candidates considering it have nearly enough signatures. Considering Bayh made this decision on Friday the fact he took till today to announce does strike as rather scheming. No primary means the Democratic party of Indiana has to pick a candidate to run. But he has also screwed the Republicans, says Maddow, who had they known he was out of the race might have run a different slate of candidates (ones who could win?) against him. Basically, in one fell swoop Bayh has screwed everyone, everywhere, except maybe himself. Videos below.

While the GOP lurches from here to there trying to settle on both an identity and a leader they can reasonably place their hopes (and cash) on for 2012 it looks like their most popular member may be toying with a whole other sort of going rogue: third party candidacy.

WaPo‘s Chris Cillizza pulled this little nugget from a Friday afternoon interview Palin gave to radio talk show host Lars Larson in which Palin doesn’t flat out reject the idea of a third party candidacy — in this news cycle that’s practically the same embracing it. From The Fix:

Asked by Larson whether she would consider running as a third party candidate, Palin said: “That depends on how things go in the next couple of years.” Larson told the 2008 vice presidential nominee that answer “sounds like a yes” to which she responded: “If the Republican party gets back to that [conservative] base, I think our party is going to be stronger and there’s not going to be a need for a third party, but I’ll play that by ear in these coming months, coming years.” Which, to the Fix’s delicate ears, sounds like Palin leaving the door wide open.

On the one hand this sounds absolutely crazy. Also, the 2012 election season is still two years away, which considering how much the tone has changed in Washington in the last nine months is a lifetime. On the other hand, as Cillizza (and others) have pointed out, there is little to zero chance that Palin will actually get the official GOP nod. However, a third party run could give her exactly the sort of stage she clearly wants, as well as the ability to seriously affect the 2012 election season, and at the end of the day none of the responsibility of governing. So on second thought, maybe not all that crazy.

President Obama continues to make the off-the-record rounds with prominent member of the press. A little over two weeks ago he met with MSNBC anchors Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann among others.

Friday’s list, courtesy of Politico’s Michael Calderone, included: CNN’s David Gergen, Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza, Newsweek’s Jon Meacham and Howard Fineman, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Cynthia Tucker, POLITICO’s Mike Allen, NPR/ Fox’s Mara Liasson, Talking Points Memo’s Josh Marshall and a trio from the New York Times: David Brooks, Andy Rosenthal, and Gail Collins.

Missing in this list, as in lists past, is any prominent member of Fox News. Though it should be noted that Mara Liasson, the national political correspondent for NPR is also a regular contributor to Fox News (Juan Williams also enjoys a similar arrangement with the two news organizations). So is this a halfway step towards some sort of armistice between the White House and Fox? If we suddenly see Bill O’Reilly and Glenn Beck pulling up to the Rose Garden in their best attire, we’ll know a true detente has been reached.

If you are a political journalist — or media hanger-on — chances are you were living out of a suitcase at the 2008 Presidential Conventions, with the Dems nominating Barack Obama in Denver and the GOP nominating John McCain in Minneapolis/St. Paul. Remember those heady days?

Back then, hearing the news of a VP selection by text message made us all giddy; hours of cable news time was spent pondering the hubris of Greek pillars at Invesco Field; Hurricane Gustav was threatening to wipe the whole GOP event off the map; and the country was about to be introduced to a little-known politician who showed enormous promise named Sarah Palin. Wow.

PHOTOGALLERY: 2008 CONVENTIONS

Through it all, a cadre of journos, news execs, pundits in TV makeup, upstart bloggers and jockeying political operatives had gotten used to each other’s faces on the campaign trail, through stops in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, South Carolina, Super Tuesday and more, with their speeches, rallies, debates, spin rooms, hoe-downs, barbecues, fundraisers, black-tie dinners, arugula, waffles, shots of JD, the thrill of final victory and the bitter, bitter pall of defeat. In August-September 2008, it all converged into one Mega-Week (give or take a few days of travel time) as the whole gang plus everyone else who could score some couch space converged on Denver and Minneapolis/St. Paul. It was lots of work but lots of fun — like sleepaway camp for politicos. So – if you’re bored and nostaligic on this sleepy summer long weekend, you’re in luck — I took the best of my 600+ photos from last year and winnowed it down to the very best of the bunch, for some golden Kodak moments featuring any and all of — in no particular order — Joe Scarborough, Joe Klein, Mika Brzezinski, Arianna Huffington, Jake Weisberg, Dana Milbank, Luke Russert, Kevin Madden, Mark Salter, Ana Marie Cox, Jon Klein, Anderson Cooper, Rick Stengel, Mary Katherine Ham, Chuck Todd, Betsy Fischer, Trent Lott, John Roberts, Laura Ingraham, Jonah Goldberg, Patrick Gavin, Rick Klein, Tucker Carlson, Amy Argetsinger, Norah O’Donnell, Pat Buchanan, Ryan Lizza, Joel Stein, Walter Isaacson, Courtney Hazlett, Keli Goff, Chris Cillizza, Mike Isikoff, Alan Cumming, Jason Jones, Samantha Power, Cass Sunstein, Carly Fiorina, Larry Page, Henry Kissinger, Chad Hurley, Jon Hamm, John Dickerson, Obama Girl, Ari Melber, Josh Green, Joan Walsh, Ron Brownstein, Matt Cooper, Fred Armisen, will.i.am, Markos Moulitsas, Chevy Chase, Tammy Haddad, Lynn Sweet, Karen Tumulty, Ben Smith, John Oliver, Karl Rove, David Carr, Kathleen Sebelius, Sammy Hagar, Rahm Emanuel, Katie Couric, Peggy Noonan and various people eating free food at the CNN Grill. Was that just a blatant attempt at showing up in all of your Google alerts? Perhaps. But still, the pics are pretty fun. Check them out here — and happy Labor Day Weekend!

WaPo executive editor Marcus Brauchli has put an end to Mouthpiece Theater, the satirical web series of Post staffers Dana Milbank and Chris Cillizza, Howard Kurtz reported this afternoon.

The straw that broke the camel’s back was a joke in the latest episode of Mouthpiece at Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s expense “that went too far.” Brauchli was under pressure from groups such as Women, Action and the Media, that took offense at Milbank’s none-too-subtle allusion that, if Clinton had been at the Beer Summit, her beer of choice would have been “Mad Bitch” (video here).

Criticism of the show was harsh. “We’d hoped the self-deprecating humor of me and the irreverent humor of Dana would combine to make something funny and interesting and on the news,” Cillizza told Kurtz. “It wound up not working. . . . Ultimately it wasn’t funny.” Retorted Jay Rosen on Twitter, a vocal critic of Mouthpiece: “In @howardkurtz‘s coverage…the fatal misjudgment is clear: Milbank and @TheFix thought they came off as self-deprecating.” Comedians Josh Funk and Andy Cobb ridiculed the show, saying it was “so unfunny [it] might be performance art.”

In a post that ran on Cillizza’s blog, The Fix, he apologized for the show and debriefed his readers on Brauchli’s decision to end Mouthpiece’s run, calling the series an “experiment by the Post in producing original web video content”:

We are in an experimental age of journalism in which many of the old ways of doing business are rapidly being transformed. I have always believed that experimentation — and the willingness to fail — sit at the center of any creative endeavor, and have done my best to bring that mentality to the Fix each and every day.

In an interview with Kurtz, Brauchli said that the Post‘s multimedia editing processes were partly to blame:

“We did not have an effective system for vetting videos and other multimedia content,” Brauchli said, insisting that will change. He said the paper will keep experimenting with new media but that “we need to hold ourselves to our standards to deliver that.”

That, of course, does not account for the faulty judgment which allowed the “Mad Bitch” joke to be aired in the first place.

Cillizza’s post on The Fix apologized for his failed attempt at satire full-stop. “I can only hope that those who have enjoyed reading the Fix, following me on Twitter and Facebook and watching my occasional television appearances can follow the age-old maxim: to err human, to forgive divine,” he wrote.

Between Cillizza’s post on The Fix and Kurtz’s article — which quotes Cillizza, Milbank and Brauchli extensively — the Post is careful to separate out the ill-advised Mouthpiece from the more traditional journalistic work of the two. Baruchli called Cillizza “an enormous talent and someone who is closely followed and admired by a lot of journalists and people in politics” and of Milbank: “Dana writes a terrific, very funny and usually very popular column on Page 2. He’s an equal-opportunity offender, and from time to time everyone’s mad at him.”

Should WaPo have given Mouthpiece a shot? Absolutely – as Cillizza says, experimentation and the willingness to fail are the cornerstones of progress (and, potentially, pageviews). Should they have axed it? Yes – as Rosen tartly pointed out, Mouthpiece was embarrassing and threatened to tarnish Cillizza’s and Milbank’s reputations (not to mention the Post‘s). But even Rosen, über-critic, noted the difference between the a good idea and faulty execution, noting Friday: “People are finding it a challenge to express how bad “Mouthpiece Theatre” with Dana Milbank is… But they should keep at it.” If not this experiment, then hopefully the next.
