Basically, Eichner headed to the Super Bowl to ask tons of fans about what really matters; Madonna. That’s funny enough but the grand finale, where he actually gets on the field at the end of the game to interview athletes having the best moment of their life about an aging pop singer is incredible.

Oh yeah, and he also asks a cheerleader where he can score some coke. That’s funny too.

Really there’s not much to say here. Basically, Gervais was mocking of O’Brien’s network, TBS, and claiming that the only reason someone would be that high on the dial would be to find porn. So then he gave those people a little treat. And fun was had by all.

Honestly, if Gervais just makes his entire Golden Globe monologue* a series of silly faces and close ups of his hairy chest, we wouldn’t be particularly disappointed. It would still be funnier than anything the Oscars pulled off this year…

*We’re totally going to be covering the Globes this Sunday so, y’know, get excited!

You see, while comedian David Cross was talking up the second season of his IFC series The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret, he did something amazing; he gave the greatest set up to a clip in the history of the talk show.

It’s just wonderfully helpful and exhaustive. An example of perfect clip set uppery.

Side note: This clip is particularly funny to me as it almost perfectly echoes a conversation in my apartment this weekend when we tried to watch the premiere and remember what on earth happened last season. After 30 minutes of discussion, we still couldn’t figure out why Todd’s assistant now had Jon Hamm as a butler. Thank God for Wikipedia!

“It’s Jon Stewart!” O’Brien exclaimed when he looked out into the crowd and found the fake news anchor enjoying the show, showing off an obviously fake ticket to the show. “I won these in a baked ticket contest,” he joked, adding that O’Brien was missed in New York. While the pleasantries were appreciated, O’Brien had an important reminder for Stewart: “Shouldn’t you be doing The Daily Show right now?” Which made Stewart dart off out of the crowd, running to be on time for his own show.

With an empty seat, O’Brien calls in one of the people on the standby line, who happens to be Stephen Colbert, who walks in to cheers and brandishes a fake ticket of his own. “Found it on the sidewalk!” he joked. “People are just throwing them away, huh?” O’Brien had the same reminder for Colbert (“Don’t you have a show to do?”) but Colbert didn’t seem concerned. “I’ve got like 18 minutes, plenty of time,” Colbert noted. When notified he actually had 17 and not 18 minutes, however, he ran away, panicked.

Scott was walked down the aisle by Bravo host Andy Cohen, to a song I couldn’t quite hear over his jacket.

The couple, joined by their friends and family, recited their own vows under a very autumnal orange and gold floral chuppah that perfectly complimented Conan’s hair.

There is no need to rehash the drama that unfolded over the last two years that saw Conan replace Jay Leno, only to have then be replaced by Leno. And there have been many stories (and a documentary film) that have explored the depths of O’Brien’s emotional roller coaster engendered by that period. So maybe O’Brien has entered a healing phase, evidenced by his return to the scene of his start in Late Night television.

That’s why everyone reading this post can totally name five Pussycat Dolls songs off the top of their head. Easy! And she was talking about becoming a host of The X Factor! How could that not be fascinating enough to keep your attention!

Really, this whole thing is so offensive. Clearly Scherzinger should switch over to hosting The Voice where artist’s are respected for their talent!

The Wall Street Journal has delved deeply into the ratings for TBS’s highly hyped Conan, the return of the red-headed former Tonight Show host to late night, and WSJ concludes it’s a flop. “In the nine months since Conan‘s debut, TBS has canceled its only other late-night show, George Lopez‘s Lopez Tonight, and viewership of Conan has tumbled, by about 60% since its high-profile debut last fall,” writes the paper’s Lauren A.E. Schuker. TBS’s pricey Conan O’Brien experiment is flopping—and is about to get even more expensive.”

The cable network swooped in to snatch the disgruntled host after the epic collapse of his long-term relationship with NBC, paying the star more than $12 million a year to bring his act to TBS as the “building block” of a revival of the network. The late-night comedy block that included Lopez has recently ended, but Schuker reports TBS hasn’t given up on getting its money’s worth out of O’Brien:

“Conan personifies the smart funny tone that we want TBS to have,” Said Steve Koonin president of Time Warner’s Turner Entertainment Networks, which includes TBS, noting that “Conan” earned several Emmy nominations this year. “His program is the signature show of our line-up and the centerpiece of our network.”

Having arrived on the campaign trail amid a thunder of media coverage and the instant status of “top tier” candidate, Texas Gov. Rick Perry can now add late night comics to the group of people who’ve elevated the Republican presidential candidate–in this case to prime joke material. On TBS’ Conan, Conan O’Brien opened his monologue with a discussion of the Perry campaign, observing that Perry “distanced himself from George W. Bush” by saying that he’d gone to Texas A&M, while Bush went to Yale. “In other words, Rick Perry’s idea of instilling confidence is to say ‘don’t worry, I’m not as smart as George W. Bush.’”

Conan also discussed the comments made about Perry by former president Bill Clinton, who described Perry as a “good looking rascal,” suggesting Clinton might be in search of a “new wingman.” O’Brien also revealed that Mitt Romney is a robot.

Forget four years, that’d be hell in four seconds.

The story goes like this; Griffin was in Washington DC and riding an elevator when Bachmann and a staffer got on. The staffer pulled out a camera and began taping in case there was any good footage for their website. Griffin took the chance to ask the candidate if she’d support her attempt to get Don’t Ask Don’t Tell repealed and, shockingly, Bachmann said no. So Griffin then asked if Bachmann was born a bigot or became one, to which Bachmann replied, “That’s a good question. I’ll have to get back to you.”

Griffin seemed to think this was a ridiculous response although clearly it just proves that Bachmann knows it’s wise not to get in fights with jokesters who have a huge gay following. That’s fantastic. It means, were she to get elected, we’ll never go to war with shirtless Vladimir Putin.

Really though, the best part of this clip is that you can imagine Sarah Palin watching the TV and getting furious. “What is this?! Kathy Griffin used to make fun of me! Of meeeeee! Quick, driver! Get the bus and drive me to the Bravo network!”

TBS has canceled Lopez Tonight, the late night show hosted by George Lopez. In a statement, the network says the final episode will air tomorrow: “TBS has reached the difficult decision not to order a third season of Lopez Tonight,” TBS said in the statement. “Thursday will be the final episode of the show. We are proud to have partnered with George Lopez, who is an immensely talented comedian and entertainer. TBS has valued its partnership with George and appreciates all of his work on behalf of the network, both on and off the air.”

Variety reported in May that TBS had informed Lopez the future of Lopez Tonight was in question, largely due to sinking ratings:

The ratings for Lopez’s show have been dropping this year despite having Conan O’Brien come in last November as a lead-in. Though “Conan” bumped “Tonight” to midnight, TBS hoped Lopez would get increased visibility in the later timeslot thanks to O’Brien.

But after a brief increase in late 2010, “Tonight” is dropping across key demos. In total viewers it’s dipped from an average of 810,000 in the final quarter of last year to 544,000 in the second quarter of this year to date.

“Conan” ratings are also down compared with its launch numbers. After averaging nearly 1.95 million total viewers in the fourth quarter last year, it has dropped to 1.09 million in the second quarter of this year to date.

On Monday night’s Conan, CNN’s Piers Morgan made a public apology over the whole dustup involving Paul McCartney‘s ex, Heather Mills, and her claims that a reporter working for a newspaper then edited by Morgan hacked her phone. “I introduced her to Paul McCartney,” Morgan revealed, telling Conan that Mills and McCartney attended an event organized by Morgan’s paper, the Daily Mirror. “I actually introduced them…and that one decision by me cost Paul McCartney fifty million dollars.” Morgan suggested Mills ought to be thanking him for the cash, and then made his mea culpa. “I do want to apologize, but to Paul, for introducing him to Heather.”

Morgan says McCartney now claims someone has hacked his phone, and “I suspect it was Heather Mills,” noting that in the couple’s divorce papers, McCartney makes reference to Mills hacking into his phone and passing along information to British newspapers.

How did this one escape the all-seeing eyes of Mediaite? Somehow the Republican Party has unveiled a 2011 “campaign ad” in Spanish, and we’re seeing it for the first time on Conan O’Brien‘s late night show. But hey, it’s been a busy few weeks. At any rate, if this ad is to be believed as a genuine message by the Republican Party–and we have our doubts–the GOP needs to work on its accent. A lot. As Conan explains, the “Get Your Own Patatas” ad comes in response to a slick Spanish language ad produced by the Democrats.

The ad–featuring a man, a table covered in “patatas” and Uncle Sam–may be fake, but somehow, that “Get Your Own Patatas” line is starting to have a nice ring to it.

This week’s headline-grabbing Paris Hilton interview by ABC’s Dan Harris got most of the attention for the reality star’s decision to walk out mid-chat rather than address Harris’ question–has your “moment” passed? But as Conan O’Brien discovered, there was an equally significant revelation in the interview–that Hilton’s on-camera voice is, basically, a put-on. In a clip aired on Conan Thursday night, Hilton ditches the baby voice and breathy whine and reveals–for the first time on camera–her real voice. And, well, it’s probably best that she sticks with the baby talk.

Ever the cool kids in class, the gang at Conan have found the funny in a subject You’ll Just Never See On Leno. In case you haven’t been swept up in the uproar over Apple’s latest version of its massively popular video editing software Final Cut Pro, Conan O’Brien set it up for you: “Apple just released a new version of their famous editing software Final Cut Pro, but apparently it’s so different from the last version of Final Cut, video and film editors all over Hollywood are having a hard time adjusting to it.” Ah, but not the whizbang editors at Conan! They love Final Cut Pro X!

The Conan editors went so far as to use the new software to produce a “video statement” supporting Apple–a video riddled with mistakes, screwups and problems that anyone who’s ever tried to use Final Cut will immediately find painfully funny.

A discussion of healthy ways to add years to your life got mildly–and entertainingly derailed–on CONAN last night when CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta asked Conan O’Brien about his sex life: “Are you having regular sex?” Apparently, having “regular sex” is good for you, as is limiting your coffee intake and making sure you floss daily (flossing? why’s it always got to be flossing?) But 30 Rock‘s Tina Fey, sitting next to Gupta, immediately jumped on the adjective “regular.”

“What’s your definition of ‘regular?’ Regular style?” asked Fey, as O’Brien launched into a very funny bit–and, of course, called Dr. Gupta “a pervert.” Don’t feel too bad for him, though, Gupta’s headed to Hawaii (for work…right) to continue his work the with CNN Fit Nation 2011 team of regular folks trying to get healthier. They’ll take part in a triathlon on Thursday.

The sidekick’s sidekick in question was none other than Jimmy Pardo, the stand up, podcast host, and Conan‘s own warm-up guy. Standing at his own podium slightly behind Richter’s own, Pardo did a tremendous job of laughing heartily at every word that came out of Richter’s mouth and staring coldly whenever Conan tried to talk. O’Brien balked, claiming that a good sidekick isn’t just a guy “fake laughing at every lame joke the host says.”

“Oh, it isn’t?” responded Richter.

The suicide “rule” boils down to something like this: we don’t cover suicides (unless they’re visual, interesting, or we find some other compelling argument for doing so.)

How, then, do journalism’s very loose “rules” guide coverage of Charlie Sheen, a troubled and very rich actor arguably in the middle of a slow-motion suicide attempt fueled, as Mediaite’s Tommy Christopher has argued, by wall-to-wall media coverage, from TMZ to 20/20? Not covering the story is clearly not an option, with flagship network programs like Good Morning America and TODAY fighting for fresh material from Sheen, and devoting significant airtime to telling the story. When CNN’s Piers Morgan got Sheen for a live, hour-long interview, it became Morgan’s all-time highest rated show since his launch in January.

If Sheen is not, as he believes, “fine” and “healthy,” but rather, like HLN’s Dr. Drew Pinsky believes, in “acute mania, and that’s a psychiatric emergency,” is it a story?

Author and journalism professor Jeff Jarvis watched Morgan’s interview and concluded the host was borderline enabling Sheen, reflecting on his own early days as a reporter when he was admonished for suggesting a story on a “colorful,” but clearly mentally ill local man. Was the CNN interview any different? “If we ruled out people who are mentally unstable or somewhat psychologically challenged, there would be a lot fewer people on the air and in newspapers,” argues Jonathan Wald, executive producer of Piers Morgan Tonight.

Wald suggests that a blanket “rule” prohibiting the interviewing of people clearly suffering from delusions would mean a lot less coverage of newsmaking dictators, like Muammar Gaddafi (who CNN’s Kyra Phillips playfully matched up with Charlie Sheen in a segment asking whether Sheen was Gaddafi’s “brother from another mother.“)

Of course one reason why media shies away from suicide as a rule is that covering it thoughtfully would require talking about mental illness, which is a drag. It’s a lot easier to explain things away in more simplistic fashion. In a set of guidelines for journalists assembled by the Florida-based Poynter Institute, Cindi Deutschman-Ruiz suggested that suicide presents an opportunity to inform audiences about mental illness, mentioning a chef’s suicide that was reported as happening after he got a bad review:

When the media focus mainly on a bad review received by a renowned chef in Europe prior to his suicide, we overlook a serious depression he had for a long time before his death and squander an opportunity to talk about depression and its potential role in suicide.

In the Dallas Morning News, editor Michael Landauer argues that coverage of what’s happening to Charlie Sheen can serve a good purpose:

Is he sick? Yes, clearly — although I don’t know enough to diagnose what’s wrong. And I feel for his family. But the sad truth is that there are thousands and thousands of families dealing with situations like this, and highlighting this breakdown, taking people inside it, might actually help some people.

It’s interesting to see how ABC cut the interview in with clips from past interviews where he was clean and sober and of a sound mind. That seems to have unraveled. You can almost picture Sheen talking with Oprah a year from now talking about how messed up he was.

But precious few stories about Charlie Sheen come from a place of education on the ravages of mental illness and the stigma that surrounds them. Instead, it’s far easier to brush off claims of illness, and run with a simpler story. On Conan Tuesday night, Piers Morgan shared how he pitched the live hour to Charlie Sheen, saying “you’re sounding like you’re crazy, where I don’t think you are.” To Morgan, the entire Sheen episode boils down to “a man’s right to party.” Morgan, on his CNN program, described Sheen in exclusively positive terms, including “legendary Hollywood Hellraiser.” It’s okay, you see, because this is a guy in the middle of a massive party, not a television star in the middle of a manic episode in need of help.

Jarvis has argued that the media have crossed the ethical line with the neverending coverage of Sheen’s every bizarre word:

Is what Sheen says in his haze of insanity or drugs newsworthy? I don’t think so. I think it’s exploitation.

Perhaps the best “rule” for covering Charlie Sheen comes from author Tod Maffin, who believes Sheen is in the middle of a dangerous manic episode that could end very badly. He suggests a simple guideline: “If you wouldn’t make fun of someone with cancer, you shouldn’t be poking fun at Charlie Sheen.”

Cancer? Now there’s another worthy topic that makes journalists queasy. Charlie Sheen’s on Twitter, you say? Gold.

Ah, that was mean. He’s probably been jealous of Colbert over that for years. I apologize.

Across all of late night, broadcast and cable, ‘The Daily Show’ finished the month as the #1 late night show among Persons 18-34, Men 18-34 and Men 18-24.”

Huh, the show only won with men alone and men and women together? Well, I guess women just suck at watching The Daily Show. Looks like I’ve got the first chapter of my book response to Mediate founder Dan Abrams’ book Man Down which I’m tentatively calling “Whoa-Man: Why Us Dudes Are Still Totes Awesome.” It’s going to be amazing.

Anyway, Comedy Central also trumpeted the success of both The Daily Show and The Colbert Report’s websites, claiming that they were the top two late night show sites when ranked in “Total Visits, Total Unique Visitors, Men 18-34 Unique Visitors and Total Minutes during January 2011.” This is impressive considering that watching TV on your computer is clearly the wave of the future. However, this is still the present so who cares, am I right?
