Dr. Phil recently sat down with Casey Anthony's parents, Cindy and George, in order to try to gain some sort of insight into what they were thinking leading up to their daughter's trial. How, Phil wanted to know, does one go from having a supposedly happy, healthy childhood to reportedly burying one's own daughter in the dirt instead of reporting her death? He shared one bombshell with HLN's Joy Behar.

Apparently, Anthony's mother believes her daughter's actions may be the result of a brain tumor. She reveals Casey suffered a seizure in 2007, and another about a year and a half later. Dr. Phil followed up by asking whether any medical tests were done on Anthony that may have revealed the existence of a tumor. The answer? "Not then."

Well, how’s that for a headline? Allow us to clarify…

Dan Abrams, whom you might recognize as the founder of this very site, visited the Dr. Phil Show to promote his latest book, Man Down. He was joined by a fellow male (Boo!), comedian Kirk Fox, and two female comedians, Kate Rigg and Kathleen Madigan, in order to test a theory often associated with the fairer sex: Women, it seems, have a higher threshold for pain. Or do we?

Abrams wisely sat out on an experiment involving waxing (possibly because he’s been there, done that), but did participate in a test to determine who could hold his or her hand in a jug of ice water the longest. Both Abrams and Rigg looked mighty uncomfortable during the task

“I’m admitting… I’m in significant pain,” said Abrams, clutching his chair while his opponent coolly studied her nails.

So who was able to hold out longest? Watch the video to find out:

Well, rest easy gentle readers: We have an update for you.

Williams, the homeless man whose life was changed after a video of him speaking in his radio-friendly voice made rounds online and on TV (inspiring many, prompting job offers and cultivating, for some reason, the ire of Vicki Lawrence), recently checked himself into a rehab facility following an altercation with his daughter and the revelation that he was abusing alcohol. He’s since checked himself out of rehab and has entered a sober living community.

He recently appeared on CBS’ Early Show to discuss where he is in terms of his recovery – he called entering rehab a “rushed decision” and said he “felt scripted” while at the facility – as well as the ways his instant fame affected him. \Check out video of the interview, via CBS.

As TV viewers and blog readers monitored his progress closely, Williams admitted that he has had to struggle with alcoholism and drug use – habits that saw Williams losing his job and growing estranged from his family. As Gossip Cop reports, Williams was finally reunited with several members of his family on Dr. Phil’s daytime show. After taping the segment, Williams and his daughter, Janey, entered into an altercation. He was then invited back on the show, where he revealed that he is still drinking.

Dr. Phil then urged Williams – off-camera – to seek help for his addiction.

Sure, a cynic might argue that King was able to get so many people to pay tribute to him because he never went tough on anyone, but either way, there aren’t many well-known figures in any walk of life who could have inspired as much goodwill as King did tonight. Easy target for mocking though he might be, he’s an icon all the same.

For King’s final speech on his final show, the clearly emotional host said he was “without words.” He said he “never thought [the show] would last this long,” but thanked everyone associated with the show, and of course, the viewers, for making it happen. He reminded those viewers he’s not going away, saying he’ll still have a relationship with CNN, will do radio work, and will “be around baseball.” He closed by saying, “Instead of goodbye, how about ‘so long.’”

It’s clear King has just as hard a time imagining himself out of broadcasting as anyone else….and indeed, can’t stay out of it. It was also clear, though, that tonight was the end of an era, and judging by the litany of well-known faces that showed up, King was far from the only one to notice. Video of his final speech, via CNN, below.

In what may be one of the most awkward names since the launch of Mediaite.com, Mediaite has learned that Jay McGraw, son of Dr. Phil, is preparing to launch Rumorfix.com, a site whose mission sounds eerily similar to our cousin site GossipCop.com (Mediaite founder Dan Abrams also co-founded Gossip Cop). Mcgraw has teamed up with television producer Richard Ayoub to create the site which they call the “anti-tabloid.”

In just over a year, Gossip Cop has become a top destination for celebrities and public figures looking to correct the record on inaccurate gossip and has been the only major site devoted to calling out the tabloids and gossip web sites who don’t care to, well, check facts. Demi Moore, Tori Spelling, Jessica Simpson, Lindsay Lohan and Kim Kardashian are among dozens of stars, who have publicly thanked Gossip Cop for its work “busting bad dish.”

In addition to a solid star following, Gossip Cop has done well in establishing itself in the very crowded field of celebrity gossip sites, thus far gaining well over 1 million unique visitors per month. So it’s not necessarily a surprise that imitators would sprout up but editor and Gossip Cop co-founder Michael Lewittes says he welcomes any newcomers to the game: “If they post accurate info, and I don’t have to spend my time policing them, then I’m here with open arms.”

Mediaite learned of Rumor Fix’s imminent launch from a reader who so eloquently wrote “dude you know someone is trying to rip Gossip Cop off? Right?” The site may have been inspired by one of Gossip Cop’s big fans, Dr. Phil’s own wife Robin who just six weeks ago, tweeted, “i love gossipcop.com….only prints the truth!

In what can only be described as odd choice, an example of the sort of stories that Rumor Fix intends on publishing includes a timeline of the divorce between Dr.Phil and his wife. This raises the quesion: Is son Jay looking to exploit the alleged scandals and media coverage of Dr. Phil? The post is titled “History of a Rumor: The McGraw Divorce,” and reads as follows:

Tabloids love reporting on the personal lives of celebrity couples. Since 2007, Globe and National Enquirer have printed several reports on the imminent fate of one couple’s relationship. Fortunately for that couple, and unfortunately for those tabloids, none of the stories about jealousy, arguing, affairs and tell-all books have panned out.

Although gossip rags want you to believe that Dr. Phil, and wife, Robyn, are headed for divorce, the couple has shown time and time again that it’s best not to believe everything you read.

To get an idea of how long these rumors have been plauging the McGraws, check out our timeline below.

Top cop Lewittes added “They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. And I guess I’m flattered, but I also know that very few people go into a deli craving imitation meat.”

While Rumorfix.com currently says “coming soon,” there are more stories up already that look and sound awfully similar to stories Gossip Cop has covered. But if the Cop says its legal, then who are we to judge.

Forbes released its annual list of the 100 most powerful celebrities today, and look! Some of your favorite media moguls, TV hosts, and radio personalities made the cut. Here at Mediaite, we rank these folks against each other on the regular with our trusty Power Grid. Granted, the numbers on the two lists differ with Forbes’ inclusion of other types of celebrities (like Britney Spears, coming in at #6 – nice comeback, girl!) but let’s take a look at how they compare, shall we?

Oprah WinfreyForbes rank: #1

PG rank: #1 among TV anchors/hosts, #3 among media moguls

Ms. Winfrey might be leaving her talk show after 25 years – no more Oprah’s Favorite Things?! – but that didn’t stop her from snatching the top spot on the Forbes list from last year’s most powerful celeb Angelina Jolie, now #18. She’s adding frequent Oprah guest Nate Berkus to her star-making Harpo production company soon, and following that up with the launch of her very own network. In summary, Oprah owns you, and the Forbes list.

Rush LimbaughForbes rank: #19

PG rank: #2 among radio hosts

Limbaugh, Forbes‘ highest-ranked radio personality, is second only to Glenn Beck in the Power Grid. His $58.5 million income over the course of the past year, paired with amped-up media coverage surrounding his health and recent wedding, thrust him to the front of the rankings.

Dr. Phil McGrawForbes rank: #21

PG rank: #8 among TV anchors/hosts

Nate Berkus should probably keep his eye on the career of Dr. Phil, Oprah’s original spin-off guinea pig. He raked in $80 million last year from his show and side projects, making him the most successful person (besides the Queen herself) to profit from that cash-colored Oprah mojo.

Ellen DegeneresForbes rank: #23

PG rank: #9 among TV anchors/hosts

Ellen is still lagging behind a good portion of her peers in the Power Grid ranking of TV hosts, but as the face of CoverGirl, American Express, Vitamin Water, American Idol, AND her own record label, the funny lady is dancing her way all the way to the bank.

David LettermanForbes rank: #24

PG rank: #10 among TV anchors/hosts

Media attention surrounding a scandal (read: an exposed affair and a related extortion case) bumped Letterman to such a prominent position on the Forbes list this year. But things seem to be smoothing out for the late night host, and he has his $45 million revenue from the past year to comfort him.

Jay LenoForbes rank: #34

PG rank: #3 among TV anchors/hosts

Letterman’s longtime rival saw his fair share of scandal last year too, putting Conan O’brien out of a job after he failed to garner ratings for his new show. Back in his old time slot, Leno regained his viewership, and his pockets are plenty full to make him one of the more powerful celebrities out there.

Howard SternForbes rank: #39

PG rank: #12 among radio hosts

The shock jock isn’t the highest ranked radio host in the Power Grid (not even beating out Dr. Laura), but his deal with Sirius Radio is still feeding his bank account to the tune of $100 million annually. With his contract running out at the end of this year, only time will tell where he’ll place in 2011.

Glenn BeckForbes rank: #43

PG rank: #1 among radio hosts, #6 among TV anchors/hosts

Like Oprah and Ellen, Beck has his eyes on an empire: his radio and Fox News shows, books, magazine, and subscription-based website are just the beginning. Everyone is wondering who will be the next Oprah – is it Glenn Beck?

Ryan SeacrestForbes rank: #44

PG rank: #2 among TV anchors/hosts

Seacrest has his fingers in a lot of pies, but there’s only one thing you need to know to explain why he is such a powerful man: he produces Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Thank you, Ryan.

Conan O’brienForbes rank: #51

PG rank: #4 among TV anchors/hosts

Conan was ousted from prime late night real estate, but that didn’t stop him from making the Forbes list. He just barely misses the halfway mark, but not to worry – he’s still ranked fourth in the Power Grid thanks to recent media coverage (all press is good press, right?) and his fan-favorite Twitter. With a new show scheduled to premiere this fall on TBS, that fiery pompadour will be standing tall again in no time

He knows how to key in on the one subject that will allow his patient to open up the emotional floodgates and really let use. Last night, he used this ability while guesting on the Late Show. He smartly brought up the one thing guaranteed to get an entertaining rant out of David Letterman, everyone’s favorite squeaky-voiced punching bag, Jay Leno. As the Huffington Post reported, Letterman did not disappoint.

After the good doctor asked him how he got through World War II (late night talk show edition), Letterman made clear what anyone watching could tell: he absolutely loved it.

“Letterman: I loved it. I thought it was very exciting.

Dr. Phil: You were like ‘Why don’t you get over and kick the s**t out of each other. And I’ll stay here and do my show.’

Letterman: Yeah, it was great. It was great fun. And I love Jay summing the whole thing up. ‘Yeah, we both got screwed.’ And I said, wait a minute, Jay. You both got screwed but you’re the one who ended up with a show. How did you get screwed?”

Letterman was, of course, referring to a recent interview Leno gave with Joy Behar, as well as his basic attitude that he was just as much a victim of the whole affair as Conan O’Brien. However, no matter what shots Letterman got out, the real star of this segment was Dr. Phil. Not because of anything he said really, just because he was smart enough to bring up Leno in the first place. Why else would anyone care about an interview with Dr. Phil? Now clips of the talk will be posted on every blog on the internet. And he even tried to eat his cake too, defending Jay once Dave was through his rant. Letterman would have none of it though.

“Dr. Phil: [Leno] got a bum rap in this deal. I think he got a bum rap.

Letterman: He got everything he deserved.”

Politico’s Carol Lee chronicled today the increasing desire among Washington elites to stop being told what to do. Apparently President Obama has struck a negative cord with his constant advice on eating, saving money and protecting the environment. In fact, his badgering has become so irritating, trite, and ubiquitous that Lee calls him a “very powerful Dr. Phil.”

“Obama is full of scolding. He shames members of Congress for partisanship. He maligns lobbyists for their influence. He shuns politics even as he advises Democrats how to keep their jobs,” she explains. Yet all of this is within his scope of commentary. Lee takes greater issue with the micromanaging side of our Commander in Chief:

He’s prodded people to get off the couch, eat healthier and exercise more. He’s even suggested Americans buy stocks, U.S.-made cars and <a href="http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0210/32430.html"target="_blank">energy-efficient light bulbs, while cautioning them not to max out their credit cards.

Lee stops short of calling the President a bully, ascribing a certain good will to his constant meddling, though she lets the Republicans fill in the blanks for her. Georgia Congressman Tom Price takes the whole “nurturing mother” paradigm from <a href="http://www.wwcd.org/issues/Lakoff.html#NURTURE"target="_blank">Lakoff‘s liberal metaphor to Orwell‘s: “They want to tell you exactly how to eat, where to live, what light bulbs to purchase, what car to purchase, what house to purchase — down to the minute detail.”

Instead of taking care of the Soviets, he’s telling people to “Just Say No.” And there is a good reason for this that Lee overlooks: unlike most of his predecessors, being a good father is one of the most prominent parts of the Obama identity and was central to the victory of his campaign. The Obama campaign succeeded on the “hope” and “change” talking points because it was specifically centered on the children and the future, rather than the past. One of the most important moments in the 2008 campaign was <a href="http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/06/obamas_speech_on_fatherhood.html"target="_blank">his Father’s Day speech addressing the problem of one-parent households in the African-American community.

His emphasis on “good living” and positive leadership in the most abstract sense prevented the campaign from veering in a negative direction by focusing away from the Bush administration and towards an administration of good role models, parents, and mentors. Whether they succeeded in this goal is up for interpretation, but to chastise Obama for being consistent in his political personality and emphasizing his role as a moral as well as executive leader is a fruitless path for the Republicans to take.

Today is the last day of Movember. That’s right, Movember. Don’t look for it on your caledar, mofo, unless you belong to some weird pagan sect that can’t spell. No, Movember is so named because it’s a MOVEment, about MOustaches. If you’ve noticed your gentlemen friends sprouting wantonly on their upper lips, well, that may be why. Here, we’ll let Thrillist explain:

By now you most likely know the essence of Movember: that magical month in which folks all over the world grow moustaches for charity, be they jaunty, distinguished, menacing, filthy, magnificent, wispy, or “other”.
raise some sweet cash for prostate and testicular cancer research.

The charity is Movember, and the sweet cash has been raised by sites across the internet all month, notably by our friends at Asylum (“Grow a Mustache, Punch Cancer in the Mouth“) and HuffPo (“Why I Grew A Mustache – And Why You Should Care“). That last one was written by a fellow named Ari Herzog, and you can see what he looks like with a fuzzy upper lip (and donate to his team!) here. To donate to team Asylum’s mustaches you can go here; or to put them over the top at the last minute, go to Mustaches vs. Cancer and donate here. Because as they say: “No red states, no blue states… just mustaches.” Indeed.

Well, I can’t grow a mustache and I’m glad of that, but I certainly can donate, so I just did, ’cause a gal’s gotta put her money where her moustache is. I can also show solidarity with the movement in other ways. See above. And, I can also use it as an excuse to celebrate the bountiful, glorious, luxuriant and luscious mustaches that abound in the media world — so that is exactly what I have done below. Click on the image to see not only the name of the mustachioed gent in question, but also my pithy commentary. There are hidden gems like songs and jokes and salty wet kisses from a hairy, hairy face. OK I’m lying, you can’t get that from the Internet. Yet.

The power of Oprah Winfrey is such that while news Winfrey would be ending her talk show in 2011 was not really a shock to anyone, the idea of turning on the TV at 4pm and not finding Oprah on her couch may take some time to absorb. The Oprah Winfrey Show has been in syndication since 1986 meaning, among other things, that at least half my office has not known television without Oprah, and that the other half (including myself) does not remember after school television without Oprah. Even if you weren’t the biggest fan, she was just always there.

Oprah will inevitably be remembered in totality and not for specific highlights — she is so far reaching, and now so much a part of the American psyche, that it’s hard to think of a place she hasn’t had some sort of ripple effect on (though perhaps at this moment in time it will be book publishing that will miss her presence most). With that said, here’s a look at the top ten Oprah moments of the last 23 years, which were harder to come by than you might think mostly due to the fact YouTube has only been around for the last four of those years. Nevertheless! Here are some outstanding highlights.

Reports surfaced today of a very strange lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court against Dr. Phil McGraw, two producers and another doctor. The lawsuit includes many claims, but most notable are false imprisonment, practicing with out a license and indecent exposure.

The article at People.com reports:

Shirley Rae Dieu, 56, of Irvine, Calif., claims she was seeking therapy from Dr. Phil in his Hollywood office in 2007 when she allegedly was held captive and “forced to be in the same room with a completely live naked man while he exposed his entire naked body, genitals and all,” according to her filing.

Representatives for McGraw did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Dieu further alleges she was deprived of sleep and food, “brainwashed” and “subjected to edited tapings depicting her as a different personality other than her own.” On Oct. 9, 2007, she claims Dr. Phil touched her left breast during a therapy session.

GossipCop has already shot down a number of claims:

Gossip Cop has learned that the allegation, part of papers she filed yesterday in the L.A. County Superior Court, is “completely ridiculous,” according to a source close to the talk show host. And that shouldn’t be too hard to prove, because a statement sent to Gossip Cop by the Dr. Phil show states, “Dr. Phil is never alone in the House with any of these guests and all of his interactions are captured on video and/or audio tape.”

Interestingly, Dieu tried to file some claims nine months ago with the Los Angeles Police Department, and the breast-touching allegation was not included. Her contentions were investigated back then, and the City Attorney decided not to pursue the case.

Another claim Gossip Cop can shoot down which Dieu alleged in her court papers is that she “was blocked by the staff to prevent her from leaving.”
A source close to Dr. Phil tells Gossip Cop, she was “never imprisoned,” and, in fact, when Dieu said she wanted to leave the house, far from blocking her access, the show arranged to have a car take Dieu from the Hollywood house to her home in Orange County.
