Minutes after we predicted that George Soros‘ comments at a meeting with progressive donors would fuel speculation about a 2012 Democratic primary challenge to President Obama, Countdown host Keith Olbermann interviewed HuffPo’s Sam Stein, and asked him just that. While both Stein and columnist E.J. Dionne successively threw cold water on the  suggestion, Countdown’s producers labeled the segment “If Not Obama…?”

Last night the O’Reilly Factor picked up the Hillary Clinton for President drumbeat. In a ‘Talking Points Commentary’ Monica Crowley highlighted a list of ways Hillary could feasibly make a run for the Oval Office in 2012. Crowley thinks that among other things Hillary knows that the nation is suffering from “buyer’s remorse” when it comes to President Obama and will “want to make it up to her.”

The rehabilitation of Hillary Clinton has been interesting to watch, and will likely get more so if this is any indication. An op-ed in today’s Wall St. Journal by Pete DuPont is making the case that Hillary Clinton could launch a formidable campaign against incumbent President Barack Obama in 2012.

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin‘s “Mama Grizzlies” ad, and subsequent PACtivity, have pundits buzzing about a potential Palin presidential bid. At today’s White House briefing, I asked Robert Gibbs about the ad, and the prospect of a run against Palin in 2012. While Gibbs initially said the President hadn’t seen the ad, and that 2012 would “sort itself out,” he then waded back into the question before moving on, saying that this is a debate the White House is anxious to have.

Is it possible that Sarah Palin’s new job as a Fox News analyst is working against her? There’s been much chatter lately that as a possible 2012 presidential candidate her position at the cable giant is inappropriate and gives her an unfair advantage. In fact, it may be the opposite.

Lately Congress has started to feel a bit like a game of Ten Little Indians: who’s next. Yesterday’s announcement from Indiana senator Evan Bayh (D) that he would be retiring, amazingly caught just about everyone off guard. So who did he screw more, the Democrats or the Republicans? And is this actually a first step towards a White House run?

“I do think that one thing that is going to be tougher now with Sarah Palin playing such an active role [on Fox News] is the slogan ‘fair and balanced.’ What does that mean, when the two leading Republican candidates, according to polls, Mike Huckabee and Sarah Palin, are both on your network regularly?”

While the GOP lurches from here to there trying to settle on both an identity and a leader they can reasonably place their hopes (and cash) on for 2012 it looks like their most popular member may be toying with a whole other sort of going rogue: third party candidacy.

Andrew Sullivan is leaving the Right. Officially. Sullivan penned a longish post yesterday noting numerous reasons why he doesn’t feel he can align himself with the party anymore.
