“President Obama is destroying tens of thousands of American jobs and shipping American energy security to the Chinese,” Boehner exclaimed. “There’s really no other way to put it. The President is selling out American jobs for politics. The President was given the authority to block this project only and only if he believed it was not in the national interest of the United States. It’s not in the national interest to create tens of thousands of jobs here in America with private investment? The President has said he’ll do anything he can to create jobs, today, that promise was broken.”

RELATED: Report: Obama Administration To Reject Keystone XL Pipeline

President Obama defended himself in a statement saying Republican’s hurried deadline on the issue forced him to make the decision.

“The rushed and arbitrary deadline insisted on by Congressional Republicans prevented a full assessment of the pipeline’s impact, especially the health and safety of the American people, as well as our environment,” Obama wrote. “I’m disappointed that Republicans in Congress forced this decision, but it does not change my Administration’s commitment to American-made energy that creates jobs and reduces our dependence on oil.”

"20,000 jobs is important except if it comes to polluting the snail darter!" Gallagher exclaimed. Are you kidding?”

“Do you want children to have drinking water that’s polluted?” Colmes fired back at the conservative radio host.

“It’s offending these greenies! These kooks who are very important to the Obama re-election chances,” Gallagher exclaimed. “So this is a brilliant timing on his part. Let’s wait until after the election, we’ll deal with all of this later, but in the meantime, as Megyn points out, 20,000 jobs may be sacrificed in the name of political expediency.”

“The fact is that everything the president does by his detractors will be looked upon as some kind of political maneuver ,” Colmes observed. “You have to consider the fact that this would harm the environment and they’re now talking about re-routeing it, finding another place to go, another pipeline to use, and this may be just delayed, not permanently canceled.”

The Obama Administration earlier explained the delay reasoning that “this permit decision could affect the health and safety of the American people as well as the environment, and because a number of concerns have been raised through a public process we should take the time to ensure that all questions are properly addressed and all the potential impacts are properly understood.”

It will be interesting to see if Gallagher’s snarky trashing of environmentalists will become the standard bearer of pro-pollution talking points on the cable news shows.

“I do not believe in a cap and trade program,” Romney added. “By the way, they do not call it America warming, they call it global warming. So the idea of America spending massive amounts, trillions of dollars to somehow stop global warming is not a great idea. It loses jobs for Americans and ultimately it won’t be successful, because industries that are energy intensive will just get up and go somewhere else. So it doesn’t make any sense at all.”

The green blogosphere assailed the former Massachusetts governor for flip-flopping positions on the issue, calling out Romney for changing positons yet again on climate change. ThinkProgress’s Brad Johnson noted that Romney made a completely opposite statement in June: “I believe that humans contribute to that,” Romney said. “I don’t know how much our contribution is to that, because I know that there have been periods of greater heat and warmth in the past but I believe we contribute to that. And so I think it’s important for us to reduce our emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases.”

Grist’s Christopher Mims also slammed Romney. “If there’s one thing Mitt Romney’s good at, it’s turning directly into whatever political winds are blowing through the Republican base.”

While 97% of climate scientists agree that human activity is causing climate change, Romney perhaps read a recent Reuters poll that showed 43% of Republicans (and 49% of tea party members) believe global warming is the result of natural causes.

The video released online highlights a Wall Street Journal article that said Romney hired one of the state’s most prominent environmentalists and his state was the first to set carbon dioxide emission caps on power plants. A chyron pops up that reads “Romney implemented job killing carbon caps”, behind an ominous music track.

The centerpiece of the ad is audio of Romney saying in his commitment to fighting dirty coal plants, “I will not create jobs or hold jobs that kill people, and that plant, that plant kills people.” The ad then asks “Sound Familiar?” and features Obama’s much-maligned quote saying “under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket.”

The gloves are coming off for Perry who is struggling to regain momentum in the race and this video spotlights his new attack line against Romney: that he’s too pro-environment to be the Republican nominee.

Electra was in town doing charity work for an environmental organization, and Hannity took the opportunity to have her on the show and ask: is beauty really only skin deep?

Electra is participating in an environmental campaign called “Deforest Yourself, Reforest the World,” sponsored by Phillips Norelco and featuring events such as Electra shaving men’s chests for money. Electra brought Hannity a razor as a present– “you’re going to have some fun in your bathroom,” she told him– and repeatedly answered questions about the environment with come-ons like “you’re so romantic” and “I’m going to have fantasies.” She did specify, though, that she did not consider herself an environmentalist and only plants trees because “it’s a nice thing to do.” As for the great question of whether inner beauty exists, Electra gave a bold, if not unpredictable, answer.

Public Service announcements have come a long way since Smokey the Bear sternly assigned us all with the task of preventing forest fires and Woodsy the Owl asked us to “Give a hoot, don’t pollute!”

Nowadays, the trend is toward edgy, “Look at me!”-type spots designed more to generate buzz than to deliver a message. This is exemplified by two new environmental spots (via AdFreak) that are so wrong, they’re just…wrong.

The first is a UK spot for PlaneStupid.com that aims to showcase the environmental impact of air travel in weirdly metaphoric terms. The spot is somewhat graphic, and like September’s WWF ad, disturbingly evocative of 9/11:

Since they’re not based in the US, perhaps Plane Stupid can be forgiven the 9/11 imagery, although their logo and their donation pitch don’t help any: (emphasis mine)

We won’t pretend sponsoring us makes up for taking a weekend break in Prague, or flying to the Copenhagen conference. But we promise that we won’t spend it on fancy chairs for our office. To tell the truth, we don’t even have an office. All we have is a burning desire to stop domestic flights and a spectacular plan… which we can’t afford on our own.

I contacted PlaneStupid.com for comment, and I’m awaiting their reponse.

The second spot, a parody of SC Johnson’s “Scrubbing Bubbles,” is from the makers of Method soap, and it’s supposed to make you support ingredient labeling of cleaning products. The clip is funny and disturbing at the same time, creepily making its point. On the other hand, I guarantee you’ll spend part of your day singing the parody jingle, and the rest of your day trying to get the Bill O’Reilly-esque catchphrase “Use the loofah” out of your head.

A Shine-tastic job!!!

While the ad is certainly memorable, the cause attached seems more designed to deliver the message that Method is awesome and everyone else sucks. I’m sorry, but I don’t see ingredient labeling as having much of an impact.Anyone who cares enough probably already uses greener products, and I don’t see the average American looking at a label and saying, “Dialkyldimethylammonium methyl sulfate? Eff that!!!”

The PSA’s of old had only 30 to 60 seconds to make their point, whereas today, all you need is an attention-getting hook to get people to your website. Perhaps it’s just as well. Poor old Woodsy Owl would probably be branded a Marxist socialist freak today, and wind up as a plate of hot wings.
