On the live show which featured two of Twitter’s co-founders, a selection of well-known twittering guests including Alyssa Milano and Newark mayor Cory Booker, and an audience of live-tweeting types including journalists from The New York Times, Salon and Mediaite, Vaynerchuk said he “threw up a little” listening to guest Martha Stewart describe her use of Twitter as a place where she can “put out what I want to say, what I would like people to know, and then I let them interpret it.” Vaynerchuk argued that such one-way communication largely misses the point of Twitter’s true power as a listening and interacting tool.

It’s a New Yecade! I am going to keep saying that until it catches on. But either way, we’re five days in and everything feels COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. Actually, and weirdly, it sort of does — maybe it’s because of all the decade-end stuff, maybe it’s because Nexus One is going to force us to buy a new phone, maybe it’s because the TSA is about to peep our privates — but “2010″ already looks, well, normal. We already feel SO much more mature than 2009, right? Enough to look back now on the year that was with a little of the perspective we didn’t have while we were still in it (any 2009 wrap-up that didn’t include the phrase “Crotch Bomber” clearly was not complete). Enough to admit some of those things that gave us shame — like secretly loving “Party in The USA” by Miley Cyrus. Which I do. Which I can now freely admit.

I also love that song about a shorty fire burning on the dance floor. Am I alone in this secret love for cheesy Aughts-Pop? I refused to believe it — so I pried it out of a few of your favorite media people, or even some people you don’t much care for. I also asked them who their favorite villain of 2009 was, and what we should blame on the a-a-a-a-a-a-alcohol. Turns out, maybe also this list.

The only lyrics I know from this song are “Mazel tov!” Why? In the name of Yahweh, WHY!?!?!”
— Baratunde Thurston, Comedian & Vigilante Pundit

“If I had shame I would be totally embarrassed to love Kelly Clarkson’s “Already Gone” — but I love it openly and without guilt!!”
— Corynne Steindler, Senior Reporter/Editor, HollywoodLife.com (@corynnes)

“”For Your Entertainment” by Adam Lambert, not really embarrassed to love, but maybe it’s a little embarrassing how much I love it?” – Meghan McCain, Contributor, The Daily Beast (@McCainBLogette)

“I love “Party in the USA,” fyi – you’re not alone!” – Kate Lee, ICM Agent to the Blog-Stars and Beyond

“”She Wolf” by Shakira. It was more the video than the song itself. Yikes.” – Willie Geist, host of “Way Too Early” on MSNBC (@williegeist11)

“Everything from that fake-alternapoprock genre (3OH3!’s “Don’t Trust Me,” Boys Like Girls’ “Love Drunk” etc.)” – Danny Shea, Media Editor, Huffington post

“Bad Romance – GAGA!” – Gary Vaynerchuck, Winelibrary.com impresario and author of “Crush It!”

““Fireflies” by Owl City. I typically don’t like music made on anything that won’t make a sound unless it’s plugged into a computer, but this was one happy little tune in a year of otherwise abject despondency.” - John Roberts, CNN “American Morning” co-anchor

“Glenn Beck’s version of “Revolution.”" – Patrick Gavin, Politico

“It’s every Taylor Swift song from ’09. Also, “Big Ego” by Beyonce and Kanye…” – Matt Lewis, Politics Daily

“I am not ashamed to love Miley’s “Party In The U.S.A.” or the entirety of Taylor Swift’s Fearless album, but maybe I should be.” - Verena von Pfetten, Sr. Editor, Lifestyle and Entertainment , Air America Media

Yes, I know it’s from 2007, but this year every radio station DJ would play it before or after Taylor Swift, chuckling, ‘See? I got them together now!’” – Rob Kutner, Writer, The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien (@ApocalypseHow)

“I hate to admit it, but I actually downloaded Kris Allen’s remake of The Frays remake of Kanye West’s ‘Heartless.’” – Roy Sekoff, Editor, The Huffington Post

‘Ha, “Tik Tok” by Ke$ha although I’ve transcended the embarrassment! Ooh, that “Tonight’s Gonna be a Good NIght” song is pretty great.” - Katie Baker, Mediaite columnist and Awl contributor

“Cobra Starship feat. Leighton Meester, ‘Good Girls Go Bad’” – Caroline McCarthy, The Social Columnist, CNET

“The theme song from Thomas the Tank Engine (not new, but new to me…and VERY catchy, trust me).” John Berman, ABC News Correspondent, who has 3-year-old twin boys.

Runner up: Scarlett Johannson & Pete York “The Realtor.’” – Leslie Sanchez, CNN Commentator

“The Glee Cast! I sing their songs at the top of my lungs and actually think I sound okay.” - Jill Chappell, CNN Producer

“Soulja Boy — Turn My Swag On. Perfect hype music for a night out or facing down a series of impossible deadlines.” – Jenna Wortham, New York Time tech writer

“I don’t believe in guilty pleasures, so I’m proud to admit that I loved almost everything the Beelzebubs sang on ‘The Sing-Off,’ especially ‘Magical Mystery Tour.’” - Tommy Christopher, Mediaite columnist

“The mashup of Creed’s “With Arms Wide Open” and Biggie’s “Juicy.” If you don’t know, now you know, Jesus.” – Foster Kamer, Gawker Weekend Editor

“Tik Tok, Ke$ha. Duh.” – Jonathan Wald, former CNBC macher and Big Man on Twitter

(Answer: No. No it doesn’t.) But obviously I’m totally embarrassed for anyone who loves any Black Eyed Peas song, or even for anyone who can listen to an entire BEP song without wanting to chop off body parts. (Their own or other people’s.)” – Andy Levy, “Red Eye” half-time anchor

‘”Empire state of mind”. There was no other song that permeated the city’s nightlife more this year, than that song. So much so that it became passe and annoying to anyone with standards by August. However, I still get tingles and ‘inspired” by it even after its over stayed its welcome.” – Seth Herzog, Comedian

“I have no idea how to answer these, except to say that I’ve been listening to a lot of Tom Waits lately, so I’ll go with his sentimental “House Where Nobody Lives” — a nice holiday song about love and family.” – Howard Fineman, Senior Washington Correspondent, Newsweek & MSNBC analyst

He also, though, faced hurting either his credibility or bottom line – and stuck to the free shipping guarantee, leading him to tweet, “The CFO is not happy.”

We couldn’t resist asking Vaynerchuk about this highly unusual chain of events, none of which would have been possible without the rise of social media. He admitted to Mediaite that the free shipping idea was “95%” spur of the moment, but also emphasized that all his ideas are at least partly premeditated: “I brainstorm all the time with myself and say, ‘Well, what if one day this happens?’”

The financial effect is about what one would expect – shipping for the year is serious money. “We lost over $900 already today, and 80% [of customers] don’t even have their [free shipping] codes yet. This is going to get ugly,” Vaynerchuk said, though ever the optimist, he sees the silver lining: “This is a new venture…I’m excited about it and this will build a following.”

All business matters, though, took a backseat to the game. This is a pretty good summation of the general state of his tweets during and after the Jets-Colts game, as is this postgame reaction. And this one, from later Sunday night. Or this one. Or this one, from Monday morning. You get the idea, but to paint a clearer picture, this was Vaynerchuk’s response when we asked if he’d change anything about Sunday: “NO CHANCE.”

I use Twitter a lot, but I was not among the very first to see the new Lists feature. I can now, though. And what I find much more interesting than actually using the feature myself is the fact that I woke up this morning to find that I was on dozens of other people’s lists.

Even though the irony is that Twitter introduced lists about a year after I stopped wanting such a feature, I do think there is some value in having other people put me on their lists. Braggadocio. Oh yes, braggadocio. I’m talking about the incredible hubris that comes from knowing I’m on Ezra Butler‘s list of people he’d take a rubber bullet for, the chutzpah of telling everyone that luminary Tim O’Reilly‘s list of Government 2.0 people includes me among its few members, and the extra swagger in my step that comes from the radiant energy of being on professor Jay Rosen‘s list of the best mindcasters he knows. I always knew I was awesome, but now I can prove it.

I’m joking a bit, of course. But when getting retweeted has been boiled down to a science (“Adding ‘please’ increases retweets by 12.3%!“), every maven is in search of a social media metric that shows who has “authority.” Being on someone’s Twitter list is a difficult thing to game because it’s about organic usefulness to a community. I recently read Gary Vaynerchuk’s inspiring book Crush It, and to me, Twitter lists have the potential to be a metric that measures how generous you are to the communities you’re a member of.

So forget about counting your number of followers, or how many retweets you get, or the many “Follow Friday” mentions you land – Those metrics have been blown out for a long time now. The new high fidelity for my vanity is the Twitter list.

Do you have a question, comment or complaint about anything concerning Mediaite? Well if you do, today is a real chance to make your voice heard. We will be holding our Mediaite Office Hours at 3pmET.

Vaynerchuk, the host of the hugely popular wine web show, Wine Library TV, is the author of “Crush It!“, out next week and currently ranked #810 on Amazon.com. McDonald is the author of “Last Man Standing,” about JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon, currently #302 on Amazon. And Sax is the author of “Save The Deli,” out later this month, currently #369 on Amazon. Follow Vaynerchuk (you probably already do) on Twitter here, and Sax here. Sax will be in studio – as will another guest, Spud from Inside Cable News.

Glynnis MacNicol, Steve Krakauer and Rachel Sklar host the live-streamed call-in show, and others in the Mediaite team, like, Colby Hall and our fantastic interns, will appear periodically, as well as special guests.

Our call-in number is (347) 632-8956. Also, we’re using Skype now, so you can video chat in to our username – Mediaite. We’d love to hear your thoughts.

Watch us live here on this page at 3pmET, or check it out at <a href="http://www.livestream.com/mediaite"target="_blank">www.livestream.com/mediaite.

Here comes the fall book season — which means here come the websites, blog posts, Twitter feeds and viral videos that have become necessary counterparts to the excerpts, readings, interviews and lectures that were once the only way of promoting a new book. These days, having a built-in audience is essential to making not only waves but sales — so authors better be able to tap into that.

Someone like Gary Vaynerchuk is a good example, whose book, Crush It, comes out next month. Vaynerchuk has been crushing it on promotion since day one, tweeting it out as a hashtag (#crushit) and making “crush it” part of the content he delivers to his extremely faithful online audience.

THE FIVE PEOPLE YOU TWEET IN HEAVEN
THE SOCIAL MEDIA SOMMELIER

Another good example: The usually behind-the-scenes David Javerbaum‘s recent video about his new book, What to Expect When You’re Expected: A Fetus’s Guide to the First Three Trimesters. You might know Javerbaum as a Tony-nominated Broadway lyricist, but it’s more likely that you know him from his comedy work: The Daily Show, where he has spent years as both head writer and then executive producer; America: The Book for which he was also of the three principal authors; and Stephen Colbert‘s A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All, for which he was the lyricist.

Javerbaum is usually behind-the-scenes (did you even know that was him above? It is), but when a book hits the shelves it’s time to get out there. And so, here he is, starring in a new video on YouTube promoting the book. It’s already got a respectable 1,940 views — but probably not from people Googling “Daily Show Writer” and “baby book.” Here’s where the help of friends comes in — I found this via John Hodgman‘s Twitter feed (at over 80K followers, that’ll get you nicely RT’d), and no doubt the video will start to make the comedy rounds soon.

Will it make that much difference to sales? Who knows? Either way, not doing it is no longer an option. Video below.

Outside of the rapidly growing but still relatively cultish world of social media, he’s some crazy wine guy people may have seen on The Today Show, Ellen, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, or, most recently, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Inside that world, depending on whom you ask, he’s either a rock star or the new media version of P.T. Barnum. Gary Vaynerchuk expanded his parents’ wine store from a small shop in Jersey into a $65 million dollar business by creating WineLibrary.tv, where he has become a major new media personality with his energy-filled video podcasts, frequent conference appearances and chatty Twitter stream.

Vaynerchuk isn’t deterred by critics, like Gawker who called him a “wine loving Twitter twerp.” I spoke with Vaynerchuk who said the proof is in the numbers: “How can anyone think a person that built a 65 million dollar business be full of shit?” Leveraging his lifetime of experience, from flipping baseball cards for thousands of dollars as a kid to running a multi-million dollar wine and new media empire, he’s now trying to position himself as a brand consultant with his new venture, VaynerMedia.

VaynerMedia brings his brother, A.J. Vaynerchuk, who has been a sounding board for Gary, up front and slightly off center as Gary’s official right hand man. Gary, the proud big brother, gushed about what A.J. brings to the table “He has been with me hand and hand along the way of WLTV, interned at Rev3 (Kevin Rose, good friend of Vaynerchuck and founder of Digg is also founder of web video network, Revision3) and been my right hand man for 5 years. He’s spend more time in the trenches than most. He’s got passion and hustle and enormous skills to execute and follow up.”

So how does this brand consulting fit into new media? The web is in a strange transition period where corporations are beginning to buy into the idea that a closer connection to their customers through blogs or sites like Twitter and Facebook is a valuable commodity. So-called self-appointed social media experts are all too happy to take their money in exchange for the same thing most teenagers could explain to you in the course of an afternoon. The real value of these folks is their reach, his includes over half a million twitter followers and a video viewership of over 80,000 downloads a day. He’s branded ”Vaynerchuk” and his twitter handle “@GaryVee” into names synonymous with wine and new media. When you have an audience the size of Vaynerchuk’s, you can market your megaphone for big bucks.

Vaynerchuk is quick to point out that while he offers a large following and a uniquely experienced résumé in new media, his new venture will provide consulting on multiple platforms, including television and print: “The typical client is coming to us for strategy for sure, I have always been good at that. Also for education, and, more important, how to tell ‘The Story’ – the story they want out there, and for a slap in the face of the reality of the marketplace. It’s about asking questions and giving answers.” Gary intentionally punctuates “The Story” because he sees it as a vital part of how companies relate to customers.

On Twitter, he can sometimes seem nonsensical, using the hashtag #crushit (the title of his forthcoming book, “Crush It!: Why NOW Is the Time to Cash In on Your Passion“). He regularly blasts out tweets in a style that reads like daily affirmations from Tony Robbins (“If i had one wish for today…it would be that people opened their eyes and saw that they can #crushit and do what they want for a LIVING!”), or, alternatively, directs people to his videos or ventures. If you were to e-mail Gary, you would receive an auto-reply back that leads you to one of his videos where he sincerely explains how overwhelmed with e-mail he is and how you can best get your message in front of him. In Gary’s defense, he’s surprisingly diligent about replying to each and every person who seeks out his attention; it’s part of what he preaches, that every single person in your audience matters.

Vaynerchuk is a great example of new media clout scoring old media dollars: The “Crushit” book deal with HarperStudio was actually a ten-book deal, announced in the Wall Street Journal, with a price tag that would make the most blue-chip of journalists happy: A cool million. With Vaynerchuk’s built-in audience and place atop the new media pantheon, great PR was a given.

But even social media gurus can stumble now and then. The newly created VaynerMedia sent out a poorly written mass e-mail, a B2B pitch for the recipients to interview him regarding his upcoming book. Some background: In the world of new media marketers, who all claim they’re more ‘authentic’ than the next guy, sending a mass e-mail is the equivalent of leaving a bag of excrement at their doorstep and lighting it on fire. Gary’s target was a relatively small group of “influencers” who each think they’re a special snowflake. Feeling disrespected by the mass pitch, he achieved the opposite effect he intended, and the influencers took it to their blogs. John Cass, of “Social Media Today” (where he boasts to being among “the web’s best thinkers on social media and web 2.0″) couldn’t resist the opportunity to roast Vaynerchuk. Cass wrote:

“Basically, the publicist just told me that he sent out the same email to a large number of people. He’s telling me he just sent me a form pitch letter! And the reason it’s okay to do that is because Gary’s famous, and he might be able to send me some traffic.”

Vaynerchuk’s strategy for dealing with any kind of negative feedback is to kill the critic with kindness. Because he’s constantly monitoring any mention of his name online, Cass’ criticism shot up like a bat signal, causing Vaynerchuk to spring into action and leave a comment of apology on Cass’ blog. With this sort of hands-on interaction, you would be hard-pressed to find someone he’s had a disagreement with that wasn’t at least disarmed by his charm even if he wasn’t able to change his or her mind. There was little fallout on twitter and among the blogosphere and it served as yet another example of Vaynerchuk’s ability to spin it into a mea culpa and a lesson of what not to do in an interview on Blog Talk Radio.

So – did any of this negative feedback blow back on Vaynerchuk? According to Vaynerchuk, “the best part of consulting is if you suck, you don’t get rehired or word of mouth (buries you.) I am in the business of moving the needle, not getting Twitter friends. I build businesses. I am not here to become cool, I am here to build brands and tell stories.” Part of moving that needle is having the platform he has, and while he says he’s not in the business of getting Twitter friends, a good portion of his business is having a massive audience waiting to hear and propagate his next pitch.

In my interactions with Vaynerchuk, he seems driven, enthusiastic, and sincere. He’s willing to be called out and seeks out conversations with people who might not ‘get’ what he’s trying to do. The constant self-promotion is what turns some people off. He appeals to the hyper-driven, ambitious ladder-climbers in social media and drives some people who are suspicious of marketing types of any kind up a wall. (That said, a Google search for “I hate Gary Vaynerchuk” turns up only positive hits. So he must be doing something right.) He wants to help you take your passion, be it collecting Smurf figurines or talking about the Knicks, into a business. It sounds like a familiar pitch, something out of a late night infomercial; he’s yet to prove he can do it for someone other than his own family’s wine business.

Drunk off the success of his wine blog, he’s out to prove he can do just that. Stumbling out of the gate with his recent promotional efforts, in classic GaryVee fashion, he uses events like this as a lesson in his video podcasts, which doesn’t involve wine at all, but plays like the more modern version of Dicky Fox. Those videos have led to him being booked to speak as the keynote at multiple business conferences, a positive sign for corporate clients outside the wine space. It shows Gary understands selling and marketing beyond red, white or rose. Perhaps those are all the credentials he needs. Which is good, because as far as formal corporate experience goes, he doesn’t have much more; VaynerMedia partner A.J. Vaynerchuk may have graduated from Boston University with a degree in advertising, but that was in May.

But those are the old rules, and Vaynerchuk made his mark in a new world. He pushes “authenticity” and “transparency” at a time when they are two of the industry’s hottest buzzwards. He also pushes hard work – and has the track record to show for it. More than that, he’s proven that he’s adaptable – he’s a good listener and he’s willing to admit mistakes – and learn from them. Will corporate America look at this kid from New Jersey and be willing to do the same? He’s got about 65 million dollars worth of reasons why they should.
