North Korean state television announced Sunday that Kim Jong Il Supreme Leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) has died.

North Korean state television announced Sunday that Kim Jong-Il, the Supreme Leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, otherwise known as North Korea has died.

Fox News’ Harris Faulkner reported the news during Geraldo at Large with additional reporting from Geraldo Rivera and foreign correspondent Greg Palkot who were both live from Kuwait.

Jong-il had been the leader of the country since 1994 when his father Kim il-Sung had died of a heart attack at age 82. According to South Korean media, Jong-Il died of “fatigue while on a train ride.”

Palkot announced that Jong-il’s son was preparing to take over the leadership of the country. “Because of the real problems that Jong-il had with his health, he was getting his son ready,” Palkot explained. “We thought it was going to be years in the grooming process for his son. It could still be….It is a significant move. They have to see it as a possibility either for more problems, more chaos, more pulling back by the military that pulls all of the levers there or perhaps some kind of opportunity for a new start with North Korea which the Obama Administration has been struggling with right now,”

Watch Geraldo Rivera announce the breaking news on Fox News below:
He was undeterred by any animus exhibited towards “corporate media” behemoth Fox News last night by Occupy Wall Street protesters during last night’s live report at Zuccotti Park. Producers of his show Geraldo at Large, however, may not be as deserving of accolades, evidenced by the odd decision to tape a live segment dedicated to the Baby Lisa tragedy amidst the protesters, which in hindsight, probably went better than one could reasonably expect.

Geraldo was ostensibly hosting his Sunday night show live from the epicenter of the Occupy Wall Street movement, though he did have some studio help from Fox News headquarters in midtown. While it made sense for the parts of his show that were dedicated to the protest movement, when they came to other subjects — like the sad story of the missing baby from a suburban Kansas City home — the imagery was incongruous at best. Geraldo’s legal and pathology guests put on a brave face, though Dr. Michael Baden looked like he couldn’t get out of there fast enough.

Like any cross-section of the American population, the crowd of protesters at Zuccotti Park is a mixed bag, especially when it comes to visiting television personalities and their production crews. Some welcome the attention, while others welcome the opportunity to mess with a corporate media outlet. This was the case at the end of the segment, when the camera panned to capture the protesters watching the taping, many of whom offered their opinion via a one-finger salute.

The question prompting his response was a fairly innocent inquiry as to what the protester– dressed in a black and white outfit and matching fedora to give the Hipster Cop a run for his money– wanted out of the protests. His response? To “occupy everywhere,” because “a lot of people have been deeply and profoundly fucked by the system.” That’s as far as he got, anyway, before disappearing into the crowd amid shouts of displeasure from both protesters and Geraldo Rivera.

The protesters was immediately whisked away by both the crowd and Fox News handlers, one assumes. Rivera called the stunt “lame” and noted that the protesters had promised no such disruptive language to get on television, and after a commercial break, apologized once again for the language, expressing hope that the mishap would not mean the program would no longer be allowed to broadcast from Zuccotti Park. In between the apologies, however, there are a number of interviews worth catching, including one with a couple of young men in a beard competition (one of them explains the competition, while the other one seems exclusively capable of saying the words “this is preposterous!” over and over).

On Geraldo at Large, Craig Rivera compiled everything in the press about George Anthony– his seeming detachment to his daughter, the fact that he did not notify authorities about a “smell of death” in his car– to attempt to put the puzzle of his role in the death together.

George Anthony has a lot to explain about his behavior before the trial. Rivera had spoken to him before Caylee’s body had been found, and while he did not accuse anyone of knowing where the child was, he did note that he believed his daughter could help authorities. Now that he has taken the witness stand, he has not given any good reason for why he seemed to be in possession of the duct tape allegedly used in the child’s death for most of its existence in the Anthony family, nor for why, after days of a horrid smell coming out of the car, he did not try to call his daughter to see if she and his granddaughter were alright. As for his personal track record, he was found in a motel several months after the investigation began attempting a drug overdose, and his alleged mistress, River Cruz aka Crystal Holloway, has told authorities that she believes Caylee’s death was “an accident that snowballed out of control.”

Visiting Geraldo Rivera tonight, Trump insisted that, hope as he may that President Obama was American, “we shouldn’t have to be talking about the word hope.”

Asked about his comments on The View over the phone, Trump said, once again, that “the fact is that we haven’t seen his birth certificate,” arguing that the short-form certificate the President showed was “some document” that didn’t confirm anything. “I always give my credentials,” he told Rivera, “I like to give credentials. I’m a really smart guy. I’ve always been a really smart guy,” noting that he had god to “one of the best” schools in the world, apropos of nothing. Given all these facts about how smart he was, he told Rivera an anecdote of his day at the office. “I asked to see my birth certificate,” he narrated, and within minutes, it magically appeared.

Besides the absence of a birth certificate, Trump argued that the President “spent a lot of money to keep this out of print,” and that “he could end the whole controversy” simply by showing the document. Rivera, somewhat stunned, brought up George W. Bush‘s birth certificate, and asked whether Trump had seen it. “No, but I’m sure he has one,” Trump replied. He also noted that some of his conservative friends had tried to swerve him away from the birther issue, to which he repeated replied, “why not?”

This, of course, comes after several media appearances where The Donald has questioned the President’s citizenship, and comes in light of a birther renaissance that seems to have begun earlier this month with Trump and Sean Hannity. If Trump’s objective here is to out-crazy the rest of the 2012 GOP field– a field that currently includes but is not limited to Rep. Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain– we’re in for quite the election season.

It began like a scene out of Jimmy Fallon‘s wildest dreams: a mustache face-off between Fox News’ top upper lips, Geraldo Rivera and John Stossel. The pair dueled (showed off their facial hair simultaneously on camera) for a good cause: prostate cancer awareness. And contrary to Fallon’s prediction, the two mustaches got along swimmingly! Their owners, however, did have a point of contention: government funding of disease research, the very thing their hair was meant to promote.

Over the weekend, Rivera took a break from the week’s news to champion a noble cause: “No-Shave November,” in which men let their beards grow to help promote early detection of prostate cancer and call for further government funding. Stossel showed up to promote the cause; however, he had a bone to pick with lobbyists and activists who work only in support of certain diseases. “Tt’s a disgusting part of our political system that if you have a lobby, if you’re trendy, you get the research money,” Stossel argued, noting that diseases like diabetes are often underfunded to the benefit of illnesses like AIDS or breast cancer simply because their activists aren’t as loud.

Rivera, for his part, complimented breast cancer activists as “having their act together,” and suggested instead that those who are more interested in other diseases should do the same. To this Stossel agreed, and noted it was “good that we can help even that out.”

Except the way they were going about this “evening out”– calling for more early detection– is what Stossel would call a “scam,” noting that often this involves doctors using “unnecessary” and “controversial” tests in an attempt to avoid lawsuits or spend insurance money. Yes: John Stossel is so anti-establishment, that he can promote and bash a charitable cause simultaneously.

Rivera told the story of his face-to-face meeting with Mark Zuckerberg, and revealed how the 26-year-old billionaire “absolutely freaked out” for some reason.

Rivera had David Kirkpatrick as a guest to talk about his book, The Facebook Effect to talk about how true the movie actually was – 40% was his percentage. Then, Geraldo brought in his own story. Apparently he attended the press conference when Zuckerberg announced the 100 million dollar donation to the Newark public school system. He asked a question, and Zuckerberg gave a “very forthcoming and sincere” answer. But then he was invited backstage by Mayor Cory Booker, and things got weird.

He absolutely freaked out when he saw me. I thought he was going to jump into the arms of his handlers. I extended my hand to shake his hand and its the first time ever someone refused to shake my hand, and ran out of the room.

Kirkpatrick followed up, “He wouldn’t shake your hand?” “He refused to shake my hand and he ran out of the room,” said Geraldo. “He wouldn’t even look at me.”

So what’s up, Mark? If only Geraldo was on Facebook (he’s not), you could friend each other and make up.

Here’s the video, from Fox News:
For many who find their holiday time diminished due to the recession, Michelle Obama‘s vacation to southern Spain has seemed inappropriate, and on last night’s Geraldo at Large, Democratic Fox News political analyst Kirsten Powers condemned the trip as “absolutely tone-deaf,” and noted that she couldn’t “believe that she has done it.”

Opening the segment, Geraldo Rivera gave some stats on the kind of money the First Lady is dropping in Andalucía and noted that, while he was a fan of the Michelle Obama’s, he was uncomfortable with the trip. Republican strategist Noelle Nikpour weighed in, noting that, while she is a Republican and, thus, expected to take the position, she still wondered what Obama’s “carbon footprint going over there” was and criticized her for not visiting the Gulf of Mexico, instead. But it was Powers who gave the more surprising comment, noting that, while she doesn’t “think it’s anybody’s business whether they spend his birthday together or not,” the Spain trip was just all-around bad optics:

“Most Americans are just not going to relate to going to Spain with however many friends she has with her… staying at this exclusive hotel, spending all this money, and it is extremely tone-deaf. Politically, it is absolutely tone-deaf. I can’t even believe that she has done it, frankly. It is not what people do in their first term.”

FNC’s Geraldo Rivera found a way to further the story this weekend – an exclusive interview with Violet Kowal, the possible former porn star who said she had an affair with Gibson.

Rivera introduced Kowal by saying she “tells us she is not a porn star as some allege, Violet is a fitness model,” and describing the “torrid, tumultuous, secret affair” she claims. After getting the description of whether the affair was a “booty call” or if they “going steady” (really, Geraldo uses those terms), he asked about the offensive, violent Gibson we’ve heard in this last week:

Rivera: Did you personally see the dark side of Mel Gibson.
Kowal: He never hit me but after the media find out about our relationship he got very abusive. he called me up screaming at me, and threatening. He said that he would make me suffer.

As this week begins, we’ll see if RadarOnline.com has more of the Gibson story to leak out, or whether the five tapes will be the conclusion. If so, cable news outlets (like Geraldo’s show) will have to find new characters to continue the story in the second week. Of course, the tapes do speak for themselves – nothing says more about the situation than hearing Gibson in his own, damning words.

Here’s the Kowal exclusive:

Geraldo Rivera got his shot at interviewing Greene this week – and the results, and subsequent analysis, furthered the odd story.

It’s a little strange to see the “exclusive” tag used for the interview, considering we’ve seen Greene tangle with FNC’s Shepard Smith, CNN’s Don Lemon, MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann and Time Magazine, at least. But the phone interview was called “exclusive,” and consisted mainly of Greene using the word “issues” more than two dozen times.

What Greene was not willing to talk about was that felony porn charge, even as Rivera promised a “sympathetic ear.” (Side note: why?) “How do you not respond when someone says you’re a pornographer or this or that?” asked Geraldo. “Those things are ridiculous,” said Greene.

After the interview, Geraldo hosted a panel that included Ann Coulter and Vic Rawl‘s (the guy who lost to Greene) campaign manager, Walter Ludwig, to recap and essentially bash all things Greene. “He’s so bad,” said Geraldo. “I mean, I almost feel sorry for him.”

Presumably, there are some advisers now in charge of the decisions Greene makes (at the very least, we know there is that lawyer who is handling the felony situation). Maybe it’s time someone tell Alvin to keep quiet for a while – if this is really happening, he’s got some time to practice before he meets the press, or, say, debates Sen. Jim DeMint, before November.

Keeping the flames burning are last night’s Geraldo at Large panel, where host Kimberly Guilfoyle wondered about the White House’s “sinister” intentions and Ann Coulter offered as proof of improprieties the fact that the job was not given.

On a panel with Fox News political analyst Juan Williams and former White House counsel David Rivkin, Guilfoyle made it clear that she is not buying the claim that nothing inappropriate happened, and that she suspects perhaps White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel of being the guilty party:

“I think that’s kind of a ruse, this whole thing about Bill Clinton… this is just a distraction, throw Bill Clinton across the screen here, ok? So people are chasing after Bubba gone run amok, and, in the meantime, the story is perhaps Rahm Emanuel. Because right now what they’re suggesting isn’t going to get Clinton in any trouble for offering some kind of paid position, the fact pattern doesn’t match up with what Sestak is saying, so perhaps an investigation is warranted.”

Juan Williams’ initial response is “what are you talking about?”, though he later adds that he sees inconsistencies in Sestak’s claims, but that, in the end, it’s just politics as usual. Which triggers Ann Coulter to respond: “The fact that it’s business as usual does not work with criminal prosecutors any better than it worked with your mother. ‘Oh, everybody does it, Mommy!’ That is not a defense to a crime. The other thing that has happened since the the job was offered is, the job was not given,” she continued, and Sestak did not do what he was supposedly asked to. She argued that if the job was being offered in good faith, there was no evidence it should not have been given.

Turns out that, besides biting the hand that feeds, Williams was actively promoting these stereotypes last September when he called Barack Obama an “Indonesian Muslim turned welfare thug” on his blog.

Williams appeared on Geraldo at Large on Saturday to discuss the tea partiers along with guest Mike Huckabee and took all his anger at the mainstream media out on host Geraldo Rivera, who was taken by surprise and seemed to be holding back nervous laughter for most of the segment. Williams’ biggest gripe with Rivera was that he had been spinning tea party footage to make protesters seem racist and off-the-charts insane, taking some very personal swipes at the host that had nothing to do with tea party coverage.

It’s pretty easy to go on TV and bully a discredited tabloid hound like Geraldo Rivera around– even if he couldn’t even handle doing that without a misinterpretation of the legacy of William Randolph Hearst. Perhaps that’s precisely why Williams went on the program– to avoid what happened to him in September when he took his schtick to Anderson Cooper 360º and was held accountable for some nasty racist comments he had made online, namely that Obama was an “Indonesian Muslim turned welfare thug” and “racist-in-chief” (Anderson Cooper was generous to him– he left out the fact that, in the same post, Williams refers to Obama as “Barry Soetoro,” a name conspiracy theorists claim Obama used to get financial aid as a foreign student in school).

Williams did not only fail to retract the remarks, but defended them by saying that “that’s how Obama’s acting!” Insult turned into injury when Williams was submitted to James Carville‘s maniacal laughter at his comments for several minutes.

He’s not going to be able to wiggle out of the racist label with those comments and, in retrospect, his treatment of Rivera– who is not only a minority but worked for several years in his youth with radical Puerto Rican separatist groups– seems suspect. He smiles politely at Carville, who is literally laughing at him in his face, and yet explodes with rage at an anchor on a station that is almost universally seen as sympathetic to his movement.

The racism label that continues to haunt the Tea Party movement will remain– whatever the truth may be about their beliefs– as long as people like Williams continue to be in charge of the media relations wing of their campaign, and the fact that they let Williams back on TV after the CNN incident to berate one of the few minority cable news hosts on TV is a sign that they may need more help cleaning up their act than they are willing to admit.

Rivera begins the segment by asking Williams about misconceptions about his organization in the media, to which Williams, without missing a beat, replied that “as long as you keep helping them with hit pieces like the one you just ran” the misconceptions would continue. Clarifying that the tea party is a “human rights movement,” he continued to bash the host:

“nutwads who march around the woods with guns and years’ worth of food in their backpack are not part of us, but you keep sending them our way and we keep doing our best to disown them.”

“You seem to be attacking me,” Rivera finally astutely noted. That prompted Williams to actually attack Rivera, personally: “you’re Geraldo Rivera; William Randolph Hearst winces at some of the work you do.”

Ouch. Also, wrong: Hearst is widely recognized as America’s first yellow journalist and would have probably loved the Al Capone vault special.

This exchange was probably most awkward for Mike Huckabee, who is sitting there silently the whole time and later given the responsibility of hastily taking control of the conversation away from Williams.

Coulter and Sharpton talking race politics? What could go wrong!

To sum up Ann Coulter’s take: She love Michael Steele so much, and claims that the reason he’s being attacked by so many things is because he’s effective. In Coulter’s esteem “he’s attacked for the same reason Rush Limbaugh is, Sarah Palin is, I am, it’s because he is so great. He is is being held to a different standard by Democrats because they are trying to trick republicans into dumping the black head of the RNC who is doing a magnificent job.”

To sum up Al Sharpton’s take: He doesn’t see Steele being held to a different standard by Republicans or Americans because he’s black. He did not like Steele saying that Obama is being held to a different standard either. But, Sharpton added that “it is a social reality that you have a slimmer margin of error.”

The players? John Edwards, Rielle Hunter, Elizabeth Edwards and Andrew Young (former staffer to the Edwards presidential campaign.) Yesterday, Geraldo Rivera interviewed Young about the existence of the so called steamy sex tape, a video of which follows.

In the clip, Young lays all the blame of the conspiracy surrounding Edwards and Hunter’s child with John Edwards, pushing back from allegations that he was the “mastermind” behind duping the media into believing that he, in fact, was the father of the child.

Responding to a general prompt about the emergency response — did we do more to help Haiti than disaster victims in the U.S.? — Coulter segued sloppily into her own criticism: “Can we get to the shame and embarrassment of Bill Clinton being involved in this bipartisan effort?”

Why not, she is told reluctantly, as the viewing audience either collectively sighed or became enraged at the mere mention of the former president’s name. The other two women on the panel chuckled.

“It’s not like there aren’t other ex-Democratic presidents out there,” Coulter said. “As long as there aren’t any Jews in Haiti I think Jimmy Carter would be just fine. He would be better than The Horny Hick,” she continued as Coulter’s counterparts stifled more laughter.

“He’s a national embarrassment and to force poor ex-president Bush, as if he hasn’t suffered enough, to be hanging around with Bill Clinton…” ranted Coulter. Unsurprisingly, she found no support on the program, and unsurprisingly, the following clip will be everywhere in a matter of hours. She’s as ridiculous as she is impossible to ignore.
Sunday morning on Geraldo At Large, a particularly boisterous panel, featuring Rivera, Ann Coulter, Judge Jeanine Pirro and comedian Joe Piscopo, took on the issue of the recently announced 9/11 terror trials to take place in New York City. But who made the best TV showing?

Once you’ve heard from those directly involved, it’s time to turn the issue over to the screaming heads. Sunday morning on Geraldo At Large, a particularly boisterous panel, featuring Rivera, Ann Coulter, Judge Jeanine Pirro and comedian Joe Piscopo, took on the issue of the recently announced 9/11 terror trials to take place in New York City.

With a “tsunami of reaction” flooding in since the federal government’s decision to try Khalid Sheik Mohammed and his alleged co-conspirators on U.S. soil, in federal court, Rivera sees justice that will “reverberate” throughout the world. His emotional appeal and search for a symbolic victory seem noble, and play well on TV despite the lack of a legal basis. But on Fox News’ Sunday lineup, he’s outnumbered. ”I suspect, Ann, that you’re not very happy with my position on this particular issue,” Rivera began.

“A lot rides on this for Obama,” Coulter said, stating that either the Obama administration gets a conviction and looks like a “macho studs” or “they blame everything on the Bush administration.” At this point, she’s on auto-pilot as she derrides the “crazy liberal base of the left,” specifically frequent targets MSNBC and MoveOn.org. Never quite stating a position, Coulter’s airtime is limited, leaving her a less imposing panel member than usual, but it’s clear that she believes that a war act deserves a military tribunal, despite Rivera’s point that most of the murdered were civilians.

And Coulter is none too fond of the trial’s planned locale: “We’re in New York…,” she noted, scoffing at the well-known bastion of sin also known as the island of Manhattan.

Rivera remained confident, but emotional, saying that the “sissy muderin’ pig Khalid Sheik Mohammed” has confessed “out his tushy” since he was captured, making a conviction a sure thing.

Judge Pirro, meanwhile, made the strongest, most convincing case in the short panel format, arguing that it is clear from the start that these suspects have been treated unconstitutionally and argues that there’s no reason to give them rights now, for fear of a judge throwing out the case. “This is insanity! We are affording Constitutional rights to war criminals,” she said. Her legal background and rhetorical passion made her the clear panel leader, even with Rivera’s patriotic, New York-centric appeals.

Piscopo provided the comic relief, recommending a Sopranos-style end for the suspected terrorists. “What happened to good old fashioned covert action?” he asked. Check out the whole dialogue in the clip below:

Sarah Palin can rest assured that at least somebody is willing to stand up for her and her family to the embarrassing comments that are fueling Levi Johnston’s stay in the spotlight (most recently, his remarks that Palin regularly called her youngest son Trig her ‘retarded baby‘).

And last night on Geraldo at Large it was Ann Coulter and Geraldo Rivera himself who were sticking up for Palin while discussing how the media’s coverage of Johnston — most recently on the CBS Early Show — has been terribly overblown.

Johnston, who Rivera called a “fly in Palin’s ointment,” has also managed to prolong media attention by milking his upcoming Playgirl photoshoot, and in addition to maintaining a steady flow of juicy anecdotes about his time living in the Palin household.

“I think it does not tell us anything about Sarah Palin,” said Ann Coulter on Fox with Geraldo, arguing that Johnston is no longer newsworthy because he has nothing valuable to reveal about Palin. “She moved her daughter to another school to keep her away from this white trash idiot.”

Geraldo punctuated Coulter’s white trash remark by mentioning that “his mom is now in jail [for] selling Oxycontin.”

Coulter also challenged Johnston’s trustworthisness, saying “Wow, you don’t get a lot of fact-checking from these lies he’s telling from the mainstream media.”

The segment ended with a laugh, however, when Rivera read a statement from Palin, denouncing Johnston’s decision to pose for Playgirl, saying “those who would sell their body for money reflect a desperate need for attention. And then immediately upon finishing the statement, Geraldo posted a picture of his own Playgirl cover — ”Probing. Pushy. Perfectionist.”

Halderman‘s lawyer wants you to believe, as he made a few the first of likely to be many media appearances, dropping references to Letterman’s ‘manipulation’ and giving a vague defense argument preview.

Gerald Shargel was interviewed by Geraldo Rivera on Fox News last night, and Ann Curry on the Today show today. And the tale he’s beginning to weave is sounding like one fantastic 48 Hours Mystery episode – of which Halderman was a longtime, Emmy award winning producer.

“It’s not only a question of having sexual affairs – that might be a big yawn, this is 21st century America,” said Shargel to Rivera. “But that’s not the issue; I think the larger issue at the trial, will be, who did he have the affair with?” Wait, I thought we knew who he had the affair with? And how does who he had the affair with have anything to do with extortion? Stay tuned.

“Specific criminal intent, that’s an element to a crime,” he said in the FNC interview. “And, I’m saying that Joe Halderman did not have specific criminal intent. More on that later. I’m not identifying any defenses, but as time goes on, I may be back.”

I have no idea what that means, but I’ll stay tuned after the commercial break to see what the hell he’s talking about!

Curry, who billed the interview as Halderman’s “first chance to be heard” despite the fact that he was on FNC the night before, had a bit of a contentious exchange. But the best quote from Shargel was this – about Letterman’s “side” being public already. “David Letterman didn’t give his side of the story. David Letterman gave what he wanted the public to know,” said Shargel. We’ll have to run this by the boss, Dan Abrams, but wasn’t Letterman’s 10-minute speech his “side of the story?”

There was more though:

He wanted to get out ahead of the story and that’s exactly what he did. he’s a master at manipulating audiences. that’s what he does for a living. so to think that David Letterman gave the entire story and there’s nothing more to be said is simply wrong.
