Feeling the after-effects of a U.S. soldier’s recent shooting rampage that resulted in the death of sixteen Afghan civilians, Marines were ordered to disarm before attending a speech by Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta. Give Geraldo Rivera credit. He was undeterred by any animus exhibited towards “corporate media” behemoth Fox News last night by Occupy Wall Street protesters during last night’s live report at Zuccotti Park. Producers of his show Geraldo at Large, however, may not be as deserving of accolades, evidenced by the odd decision to tape a live segment dedicated to the Baby Lisa tragedy amidst the protesters, which in hindsight, probably went better than one could reasonably expect.

In what appears retrospectively to be an inevitability, Geraldo Rivera‘s broadcast live from Zuccotti Park had its first “live” moment tonight, as a protester dropped an f-bomb after shouting at Rivera, “my goal is to occupy everywhere!” The question prompting his response was a fairly innocent inquiry as to what the protester– dressed in a black and white outfit and matching fedora to give the Hipster Cop a run for his money– wanted out of the protests.

Geraldo Rivera knows a thing or two about Libya and Muammar Gaddafi, having covered their collective story for almost two decades. So it was somewhat predictable for Fox and Friends to invite him to the “curvy couch” to discuss yesterday’s news of Gaddafi’s death. What was somewhat surprising for long time viewers of the Fox News morning program, was Rivera’s championing of President Obama’s record on foreign policy.

The ongoing Occupy Wall Street protests continue to produce compelling viral video clips, many of which are related to Fox News. The latest such clip, in which a rainbow-hatted man dumps a bag of powder on Geraldo Rivera, functions as something of a Rorschach test, depending on how the viewer feels about the Occupy movement, Fox News, or Geraldo Rivera. It gets a little weird when those prejudices mix.

Remember Court TV and the national obsession with high profile trials? For about a decade from O.J. Simpson to Scott Peterson and Natalee Holloway the country seemed to have an insatiable appetite for soap opera like details that slowly and painstakingly emerged day in and day out in courtrooms and from investigations around the country. Courthouses regularly became tent cities with media encampments at high profile trials. Some judges and lawyers (and witnesses ie. Kato Kaelin) became more recognizable than most movie stars. Sometimes, the cases addressed important issues like in the trial of Oklahoma City bomber Timothy Mcveigh or assisted suicide doctor Jack Kevorkian or most obviously, Bush v. Gore. Others were far more frivolous like Anna Nicole Smith‘s lawsuit or a random celebrity drunk driving or drug case. Multiple daily cable news shows hosted by the likes of Geraldo Rivera, Greta Van Susteren, Nancy Grace (and me) covered the minutiae with analysis and debate from lawyers and participants.

Fox News weekend host Geraldo Rivera went to Zucotti Park this weekend to report on the Occupy Wall Street protest movement that has been going on for a number weeks and host his eponymous show remotely. During a segment dedicated to the populist protest movement and in the following segment, and while interviewing Cornell West and Tavis Smiley, the surrounding protestors began chanting “Fox News Lies.”

Fans of The Five can throw their hands in the air (perhaps even waving them like they just don’t care) and rejoice to the news that Fox News has announced that the 5pm panel show has become a permanent fixture on the cable news dial, thus increasing the chances that we will one day see the Bob Beckel/Eric Bolling fist fight we’re all so eagerly awaiting.

On tonight’s edition of The O’Reilly Factor, Bill O’Reilly and Geraldo Rivera debated Mayor Michael Bloomberg‘s decision to leave first responders and members of the clergy out of a 9/11 memorial on the World Trade Center site this Sunday. Taking a broader perspective of the national dialogue on 9/11, Geraldo referred to Ground Zero as “the most over-politicized, the most bitterly-partisan piece of real estate on earth.”
