In what was both a surprising and not-really-that-surprising moment, Bill Maher defended the outspoken Hank Williams Jr., who was suspended permanently from ESPN after his controversial remarks comparing President Obama to Adolf Hitler. ESPN is owned by ABC, the network that fired Maher after he made his infamous 9/11 comments.

On Fox Business this morning, Don Imus criticized the backlash over Hank Williams Jr’s controversial comments. “Hank’s getting a bum rap on this. The folks at Fox and Fiends didn’t help him by throwing him right under the bus!”

It seems that, in politics or pop culture, whenever a person wants to make a point about how evil someone or something is, all he has to do is evoke the name of one unsavory mustachioed historical figure: Tom Selleck Adolf Hitler. And, frankly, it just seems lazy. Chris Matthews agrees and so, while on a break from gleefully doodling mustaches onto Michele Bachmann photos, the Hardball host called out Democratic Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown for evoking both Hitler and Stalin.

Earlier today, Mediaite’s Matt Schneider compiled a rather damning list of examples of Keith Olbermann making Nazi references There were probably more than a handful of readers who saw the piece and immediately thought, “Well what about Glenn Beck?” It’s a fair point, especially in light of Beck’s own outrage at Nazi comparisons. But it’s also important not to pretend that this happens equally on both sides.

After a week of good behavior brought on by the presence of “Tea Party Person” Dana Loesch, Real Time with Bill Maher returned to “Teabagger”-baiting with a renewed gusto. Besides returning to the free and frequent use of the Liptonian metaphor, Real Time panelist Rob Reiner deployed a guest bogeyman that’s also popular with the Tea Party: Hitler.

Oof. Is it ever really a good idea to fight crazy with crazy? In an attempt to express his displeasure over Glenn Beck‘s plan to hold his ‘Restoring Honor’ rally at the Lincoln Memorial on August, 28th, the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s ‘I Have A Dream’ speech, talk radio host Bill Press made this unfortunate and over-the-top comparison.

One has to wonder if the current role of YouTube in politics is merely to reveal to the world the utter crazy factor of our elected officials. Here is the latest…because what’s a Congressional session these days without a Hitler reference? Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert decided to put his time on the floor to good use this week by reading out loud “respected conservative columnist” Thomas Sowell‘s editorial which compares, among other things, the BP escrow fund to something Hitler would have done.

Yesterday, brought us media pundits stumbling through basic citizenship questions, today brings us John McCain nemesis J.D. Hayworth stumbling through basic U.S. history questions…sort of. Hayworth is making some headlines for telling an audience member at local GOP gathering that technically speaking the U.S. never declared war in Nazi Germany. Cue collective gasp (and a lot of Texas textbook jokes). But does he have any wiggle room?

Robert Gibbs’ answer to David Corn of Mother Jones’ last question at Friday’s briefing is getting considerable attention from the right. Corn asked Gibbs about House Republican leader John Boehner’s declaration that the House health care bill was the “greatest threat to freedom” he’s ever seen. Gibbs’ response was worth a slight chuckle, but they ignore his larger point.

Conservative provocateur Ann Coulter continues to spew rhetoric that gets her attention, regardless of how ridiculous the statement. After viewing a clip of Barack Obama describing an exchange with an unnamed foreign leader who was confused about how the health care debate could possibly lead to Hitler posters, Coulter then made clear her position on the hateful posters.

Everyone was stunned at the tactlessness of the World Wildlife Fund ad depicting an apocalyptic September 11th scene, but that’s practically “Time to Make the Donuts” compared with this new print ad/video combo that compares AIDS to Hitler. The copy on the ad reads “AIDS is a Mass Murderer” in ominous all caps under a groping mid-coitus Hitler and includes the demand “Protect Yourself!” before linking to Aids-is-a-Mass-Murderer.com.
