Whenever Bill Maher has a certified Republican on his panel, the conversation usually gets heated quickly, and yesterday was no exception. In fact, yesterday he had Republican Rep. Darrell Issa, the chair of the House Investigations Committee, on the program, and got to ask him about that bizarre “In God We Trust” vote, demanding, rhetorically, “and you wonder why Congress’s approval rating is at 8%?”

Jon Stewart took Congress to task for focusing its efforts on voting for keeping “In God We Trust” as our national motto instead of, say, working to create jobs. Stewart questioned why the motto was being voted on in the first — were other, alternative mottos being considered? If so, Stewart has a few suggestions.

President Obama spoke this morning during an appearance at Georgetown Waterfront Park, bringing attention and support for his jobs plan known as the American Jobs Act. Most notably during his speech, the president mocked Congress for wasting precious time on resolutions about commemorative baseball coins and “reaffirming that ‘In God We Trust’ is our motto?’” making reference to last night’s House vote that passed with a vote of 369-9.

Finally, the Republican-run Congress will do what the Democrats couldn’t; make new jobs. A powerful bill is set to be voted on by the full House after being passed by the Judiciary Committee last week. This legislation will reaffirm “In God we trust” as our national motto and support slapping the slogan on the side of all federal buildings. So, yes, unemployed people who formerly made building signs for a living, you’re gravy train just came in. As for the rest of you…well, I bet the army’s hiring.

No surprise: when Sarah Palin presented a theory hinting that the phrase “In God We Trust” had been moved to the edge of $1 coins out of Democratic malice, she was met with ridicule on the liberal blogosphere.

Actual surprise: Fox News got in on the action as well.
