The repercussions of comedian Gilbert Gottfried‘s insensitive tweets regarding the recent string of disasters in Japan seem to have no end. Almost immediately after, Gottfried lost his job as voice of the Aflac duck. And now, in what has been described as “the f***ing most terrifying video on CNN.com” there exists a video of aspirational voice over artists looking to replace Gottfried as the voice of the Aflac duck.

Dr. Jay Lehr of the Heartland Institute and Dr. Arjan Makhuani joined host Bill Hemmer on Fox News this morning for what turned out to be a spirited debate over nuclear power safety in light of the current situation in Japan. Lehr suggested that the news frenzy over the damaged nuclear reactor was an overreaction by the media. Makhuani’s position was that the health risks that come from leaked radiation is well documented and that the situation was still dangerous. Then things got ugly.

There is growing concern over the stability of Japanese Nuclear power plants after the disastrous earthquake and tsunami from last weekend, and many Western journalists are left to report on breaking news by deciphering through a foreign language. So, its not surprising that some mistakes get made along the way. Case in point? The apparent identification of a Japanese nightclub in the district of Shibuya called “Eggman” as a Nuclear power plant. Can’t win em all.

There have been a number of heart-warming reunion stories amidst the tragedy of the Japan earthquake. The real-time capture of unfolding raw emotion of such reunions typically makes for terrific cable news segments — the happy ending that everyone loves to see, especially in the context of such calamities. Sadly though, sometimes the strange calculus of bringing missing family members doesn’t always add up to compelling television, especially when satellite delay makes for extremely disjointed dialog. Case in point? The following reunion featured on CNN.

Instability from the Japanese earthquake and tsunami continues to grow today, with the third explosion in an as many days at the Fukushima Nuclear plant. In the past two days there have been explosions in reactors number 1 and 3, and today reactor number 2 suffered an explosion. With growing concerns over the information being shared by a tight-lipped Japanese nuclear agency that is overseeing the clean-up and an expanding evacuation zone keeping media at a safe distance, it is hard to discern the real story coming from the troubled region of Japan.

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews is the latest media personality (deservedly or not) to draw ire for a display of insensitivity regarding Japan’s still-unfolding earthquake/tsunami/nuclear crisis. The knock on the Hardball host is best summed up by Newsbusters’ headline, “Chris Matthews Sees Japan Earthquake an ‘Opportunity’ for Obama to Remind People He Was Born in Hawaii.”

The aftermath of Friday’s massive earthquake in Japan has led to what may even be an even larger worry. The Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant in eastern Japan has been out of control since the quake hit, emitting 1,000 times the normal level of radiation and threatening to melt down completely. An explosion rocked the debilitated plant yesterday, raising concerns of a possible meltdown. Now video of a second explosion at the power plant has hit the Internet, and while its uncertain the scale of disaster at this point, this can’t be good news.

Anderson Cooper has made a career out of risking his life to gather news, and rarely has the CNN anchor appeared as rattled as he did tonight reporting from Japan. Discussing the possible meltdown ongoing at Fukushima’s Dai-Ichi plant with nuclear expert Jim Walsh, Cooper received the news of a new hydrogen explosion on the same complex. Upon hearing the news, Cooper turned to his crew, asked where the wind was blowing, and, in a moment of visible frailty, asked if it was time for him to go.

Rachel Maddow admits she’s not a nuclear physicist, but she has a pretty good grasp of what is going on in Japan right now. On last night’s show, she went into detail on how a nuclear power plant actually works, and how it is, to her, a “very expensive way of boiling water.” It’s a little more complicated than that, but that’s why she enlisted the help of an actual nuclear physicist to explain how, if at all, Japan could avoid a nuclear disaster.

With the situation in Fukushima, Japan evolving rapidly, it’s difficult to keep up the nuclear power plant’s status straight when reports of the system’s cooling arrive simultaneously with video of the plant exploding, but conflicting reports are noting both that the explosion did not occur in the reactor’s core, but that radioactive elements were found outside of it.

Add to that what appears to be a non-radiation emitting explosion occurring overnight from the overheating, and yet another 6.4 magnitude quake.

Like all huge events, some of the early reports on the Japanese earthquake and the resulting fall out have proven to be inaccurate. In some cases this is good (it’s possible the widely-reported figure of 88,000 missing might be too high) while in the case of America’s west coast, it may not be. This morning, the BBC quoted White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley who said the fact that the waves passed through Hawaii without serious damage was “encouraging” for the rest of the US. Unfortunately, it appears that Oregon’s coasts have been hit quite hard by the reverberations from, as Fox News’ Shepard Smith put it, “an earthquake half a world away.”

The massive earthquake and tsunami is an enormous story currently unfolding in Japan, and as news and information comes in to Western news bureaus, its not uncommon at moments like this for news anchors to get blasted for reporting something that later is proven to not be exactly right. But that doesn’t appear to be the case with CNN’s Rosemary Church, who has been vilified for making a Godzilla joke by a Twittersphere, even though she never seemed to say anything of the sort. At the top of his hastily-scheduled news conference on energy policy, President Obama delivered remarks on the tragic, still-unfolding earthquake in Japan. He spoke about how the thoughts and prayers of the American people are with the people of Japan, and the steps that are being taken to protect American territories affected by tsunami waves that originated from the quake.

Just a few hours ago, Japan was hit with an 8.9 magnitude earthquake, one of the largest in the country’s recorded history. Americans are just waking up to learn that last night an 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit northern Japan on Friday, which triggered tsunamis and sent a massive body of water that caused devastation in the Northeastern coastal regions of Japan.
