Author and self-described “deranged millionaire” John Hodgman paid a visit to Rachel Maddow‘s show to discuss his new book, whether his mustache is real (it is, poor guy), and the Occupy Wall Street movement.

On Tuesday night’s Daily Show, Jon Stewart talked with John Hodgman about how the wealthy are under attack in America. “We millionaires and billionaires should be celebrated for the inspiration we provide,” Hodgman said. “We embody the American dream that if you work hard and make sacrifices all people can be part of the 1%.” “You know that is mathematically impossible,” Stewart argued. “Or maybe you’re just not working hard enough.” Hodgman countered.

One of the strangest phenomenons of recent years has been the advent of book trailers. Without the advantage that, say, movies have (like actual visual elements that can be edited together), even books with famous authors frequently end up with trailers that just look like some intern wandered around with a Flip Camera for an hour. That’s why it’s heartening to see the brand new genre produce a work that seems like it took a little more thought than choosing a font size.

Barely an hour after a (now-downgraded 5.8) earthquake hit the East Coast, the internet began congratulating its own sparkling wit by publishing Top Earthquake Tweets lists. While this is a decidedly narcissistic exercise, some of them are actually pretty funny. To much fanfare and celebration, Countdown host Keith Olbermann joined White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs and NBC Chief White House Correspondent Chuck Todd in the fraternity of formerly reluctant Twitter users. He kicked off his brave new era of social networking by sending out his first tweet live, on his show.

Of course, this isn’t Keith’s first brush with Twitter, but we’ll get to that after you watch that historic first tweet, witnessed by uber-geek John Hodgeman.

Here comes the fall book season — which means here come the websites, blog posts, Twitter feeds and viral videos that have become necessary counterparts to the excerpts, readings, interviews and lectures that were once the only way of promoting a new book. These days, having a built-in audience is essential to making not only waves but sales — so authors better be able to tap into that.
