Spider-Man Musical Leaves Critics in Precarious Position

SPIDERMAN-MUSICAL

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has taken its share of criticism and ridicule as its suffered from several setbacks and pushed back its opening several times. The play got some good news this week with some high-profile endorsements as the show continues its previews, and word of a new finale. All of these delays have left reporters, who are seeing the show between now and the scheduled March 15 opening, in a strange spot. What can they reveal about the much-anticipated, extremely expensive production? Here, a rundown of how some writers are handling the long wait for opening night, and how delays are making them part of the story:

National Snowstorm: How’s The Weather Affecting Your Region?

SnowBeech

From the Northeast to the Northwest, the country is cleaning up and dealing with snow today. Florida is the lone exception, as it remains snow-free. Concerns over nasty commutes and dangerous roads have people worried, and newspaper editorials this morning captured the fear, anger, and good will that Americans are experiencing in the face of the [...]

Worker Rescued After Being Swept One And A Half Miles Down Sewer Tunnel

Manhole

Have you been watching the Chilean mine rescue and thinking, “Yeah, this is a miracle and a remarkable triumph of the human will to survive but it’s still missing something”? Then I have a story for you. Especially if that missing component you’ve been sensing is the lack of incredibly disgusting raw sewage. In Kansas yesterday, a 27 year old contract worker was swept down a man hole and through a mile and a half of sewer tunnels before he was finally rescued ninety minutes later.

Mainstream Media Quiet On Missouri Farmer Who Called Democrats “Parasites”

Producer or Parasite Trailer

On Monday, the Kansas City Star reported that a Missouri farmer had painted the side of a 45 foot-long semi-truck trailer with the contentious banner “Are you a Producer or Parasite, Democrats – Party of Parasites” and placed the trailer on his property near busy highway U.S. 71. The farmer, David Jungerman, is protesting people (Democrats, apparently) who don’t pay taxes and instead “always have their hand out for whatever the government will give them.”

F-Bomb Round-Up: How The Media Quoted The Unquotable, Joe Biden

nypost_biden video

Joe Biden just handed the media an easy comic relief story (and a gaffe), but with the great power to entertain also comes the great responsibility not to offend. So how did the mainstream media chose to report the story without using Biden’s off-color adjective for the health care bill law? We went with the euphemistic “f-bomb;” for all you psycho- linguistics majors out there, here’s what the rest of the media did:

Twit-Storm: Olbermann Vs Beck Over TV Critic’s Tweet

video

Twitter is now steering the media conversation in an unimaginable way, with insider gossip and PR lines dictating the direction of the ongoing attacks from Keith Olbermann. Two of the current stars of their respective networks, Olbermann and Glenn Beck were bound to clash, and it took a tweet from the Kansas City Star‘s Aaron Barnhart to get the controversy started. It started last week – and is still going on.

Glenn Greenwald Responds to Joe Klein and Mediaite on Email Leak

I wrote a piece of commentary about Joe Klein’s flame war with Glenn Greenwald yesterday in which I conceded Klein’s point about Greenwald’s publication of off-the-record emails. I also pointed out that Klein’s understanding of email confidentiality is shakier than a detoxing jackhammer operator. Rather than expressing appreciation for this turn of the tables, Greenwald had some reservations about the piece.

Klein Blasts Greenwald for Email Ethics; Pot and Kettle Outraged

An online feud is heating up between Time’s Joe Klein and Salon’s Glenn Greenwald. Although the bad blood reaches back a stretch, at issue now is Greenwald’s publication of Klein’s off-the-record emails to the “Journolist.” Klein slammed Greenwald on Time’s Swampland blog: (h/t HuffPo)

After Scathing Blog Exposé, Tactless Kansas City Journo Faces Bleak Job Search

With the decline of “traditional” journalism, established media figures have seen their salaries deflate and potential promotions disappear. Fearing a total collapse, many journalists have swapped decade-long careers for entry-level positions in other industries. Regrettably, the Kansas City Star‘s Mike Hendricks took a pompous tone in a job inquiry email and has since felt the true wrath of the internet.

Gibbs-erish: Seven Gaffes by Obama’s Press Secretary

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs seems like a nice enough guy. He has a sense of humor about his work, he maintains a friendly banter with reporters, and he was even the goalie of the North Carolina State Wolfpack soccer team. But Gibbs largely gets a free pass from the media for his many blunders. How does he do it?

Today’s Worst News Ledes: 7/24/09

News reporters like to catch readers’ attention with a few zingy lines at the start of an article. Sometimes, these so-called “ledes” go horribly wrong. Here we highlight some of the biggest offenders:
