In our weekly recap of movement in the Power Grid, we run down all of the big shifts and their current event causes. This week, we weigh White House Correspondent Jake Tapper's facial hair, Sumner Redstone's financial woes and People magazine's huge photo exclusive to see how they affected our leader board.

When you’re a television reporter, you make news any way you can — then, you see how it affects your Power Grid ranking. ABC White House Correspondent Jake Tapper has a friendly rivalry with his NBC contemporary Chuck Todd, and in the heat of the baseball playoffs facial hair is on the line. That’s right — two of the most important TV journalists have made a bet: “Jake wagered Chuck that if the Philadelphia Phillies win the National League Championship, Todd must shave his goatee, and if the L.A. Dodgers win, Tapper must grow one.”

Maybe that’s why Tapper jumped from #5 to #2 among TV Reporters? Todd sits right behind him at #3, while Andrea Mitchell occupies the top spot. In harder news, Tapper also took a turn Sunday on This Week with White House Senior Adviser David Axelrod, contributing to his #3 rank in TV airtime and huge number of Twitter followers.

Meanwhile, People magazine managing editor Larry Hackett went from #17 to #3 among Magazine Editors thanks to a huge number of online visits and some newsstand buzz as they became the first publication to run current photos of Jaycee Dugard after she was held captive for 18 years. Hackett appeared on Today with Matt Lauer and called Dugard’s cover “radiant.” It’s just another case of a huge exclusive gamble paying off in recognition and subsequent influence.

Elsewhere on the Grid, blogger Andrew Sullivan made a huge leap from #29 to #7 in his secondary category — as a TV Pundit — with increased appearances based on President Obama’s speech on gay rights to the HRC. Sullivan, as we reported, was none too pleased with the president’s level of action. Behind him, Peggy Noonan made progress, moving from #62 to #14 among pundits, with a lot of blog buzz based on her spot as a Harvard guest lecturer and many television appearances to speak out against Obama.

The Media Moguls section also had a noticeable shake-up this week, as Viacom majority owner Sumner Redstone moved from #8 to #4, making news for selling off his non-voter company shares, attempting to raise almost $1 billion to pay off outstanding debts. Such a move is an example of the age old “any press is good press” model, because despite Redstone’s financial struggles, any mogul does well to stay in the news.

Check out the rest of the rankings here.

It may come as a surprise to learn that Jon Meacham is the number one Magazine Editor given that Newsweek is going through a rather dramatic repositioning and redesign - an exercise not typically taken by a healthy magazine. So why is he number one?

According to the Power Grid, Newsweek‘s Jon Meacham is the most powerful Magazine Editor in all the land. This may come as some surprise given that the title he oversees, Newsweek, is going through a rather dramatic repositioning and redesign – an exercise not typically taken by a healthy magazine. But in this advertising climate, “healthy magazine” is a term rarely heard these days. But why is Meacham number one? And what else is there to be learned from the Power Grid?

It would be very hard to argue that Newsweek is the magazine of the moment, but Jon Meacham is number one on the list for one very good reason – the publicity around their re-launch has been quite effective. Since the Power Grid combines Online Buzz (with traditional metrics like circulation and web traffic), we can only surmise that a lot of people are Googling the Newsweek Editor. Combine that with robust online traffic for Newsweek.com, a slew of television appearances, and a Pulitzer Prize for his biography of Andrew Jackson, American Lion, and Meacham Mania suddenly makes sense.

What else can we learn from this category of the Power Grid? It makes sense to see stalwarts Anna Wintour and Graydon Carter on the list. But it is sort of shocking that they are ranked third and seventh respectively. One can only wonder how high they’d be on this list if their digital strategy wasn’t state of the art, 1998.

Also, could the rumors of Time Inc.’s death have been greatly exaggerated? Okay, no one has been predicting their global demise, but there are some limping members of the herd that seem pretty vulnerable right now. But three (!) of the top five editors are running magazines at Time Inc: People Powerhouse is represented by Larry Hackett at number two, Sports Illustrated’s Terry McDonnell comes in at four, and Time magazine’s managing editor Rick Stengel comes in at five.

What explains this? Online unique vistors sets them (and other Time Inc. titles) apart from many of the other magazines on the list. It turns out that the strategy of having a robust web offering wasn’t such a bad idea. Keep in mind that the revenue from these sites still represent pennies to the dollars of print ads, and sadly, that isn’t likely to dramatically change for some time. But at least they have the Power Grid.
