Were Prince William and Kate Middleton headed for a rocky road? What did we really think of Bristol on “Dancing With The Stars?” I was joined by Laura Bennett, “Project Runway” designer and author of “Didn’t I Feed You Yesterday?: A Mother’s Guide To Sanity in Stilettos,” and comedian Jamie Kilstein, co-host of Citizen Radio. A sampling:

On the TSA, darkly:

RACHEL SKLAR, EDITOR-AT-LARGE, MEDIATE.COM: I mean, that’s the big question right now, right? And that it feels like the TSA isn’t quite getting that balance right. I mean, there just has to be limits on this. You wonder if the TSA is focusing so much energy on these ridiculous scans and searches of people who clearly are not a danger, then, you know, all those resources are in the wrong place. So, what’s getting through? What are they not focusing on?

On creativity vs. airport security:

The notion of putting something in a cavity isn`t new. It`s not like this just like came up. I mean, it`s certainly been done before in smuggling, has it not?

On a London bishop taking to Facebook to predict the demise of the Wills & Kate marriage:

This story is not like a bishop made a pronouncement on a wedding that has yet to take place. The story is that he posted this to his Facebook page.

On the “Dancing With The Stars” kerfuffle:

Cheating on “Dancing With The Stars” shall not stand!

Also not to be missed: Jamie Kilstein’s epic rant against Sarah Palin via George W. Bush, if just for sheer out-of-left-field raw, visceral emotion. Watch the whole thing below:

Still, as I told Ali Velshi, that does not mean you should rush to trash your employer on social media:

VELSHI: This is not really about laws. This is more about, is it wise in this economy to be trashing your boss on Facebook?

SKLAR: You’ve hit it exactly. There is the legal point, and then there is just good advice. And good advice is, just watch what you say on Facebook, on Twitter, on social networks, because being sued is not fun. Filing a lawsuit is not fun. And being fired and having to do all of those things is not fun. So just avoid it.

VELSHI: Now, from your perspective as a media observer and a media critic, there is something about this whole thing, is that somebody gets fired and then they challenge it. And we want to see how far we can push that envelope. Where do you stand on that side of things? Should this person have had the right to criticize her boss on social media?

SKLAR: Well, clearly, yes. Right? She won the case. And I think that it’s an important ruling, because what it says is that that is public conversation, but it’s in the [protected] realm. It’s like water-cooler conversation, and just like water-cooler conversation in an office…[i]t was on a Facebook wall where other employees jumped in. So it was deemed to be sort of protected workplace conversation. That doesn’t mean that you’re free to say, “My boss is an idiot,” “My boss is ugly,” “My boss is stupid,” “My boss has bad hair.” Those are things that, you know, you push the envelope a little bit. But at the very least, if you must criticize on Facebook – and there’s by no means any reason to believe that non-unionized employees are protected – you might want to make sure you keep it to specific policy considerations.

Then I made fun of Facebook’s statement on the ruling where they say “Just as in your offline life, there are people you want to be more open with than others, which is why Facebook gives you complete control over how you share information.” Oh that’s right, Facebook totally wants us to be super-duper private. For more information on this, Geekosystem has an excellent breakdown. Watch below.

On the menu was the future of both Brett Favre and Lindsay Lohan, the wisdom of getting a tattoo, and crime caught on tape.

Discussing the recently Brett Favre lewd email controversy, the panel pondered the reasons behind the private materials being released and what it would mean for Favre. Hall argued that, even if he doesn’t quite want to retire early, his team might want him to, making “this might be the best thing that happened to the Vikings.” Quickly addressing a series of topics, Hall also got to wish Lohan well (and hope they “release her to pick up her dry cleaning” and not to a photo shoot), laugh at painful tattooing sessions, and note the usefulness of cell phone cameras not just in recording fights, but starting them as well!

The two men seemed to agree on a number of subjects, never moreso than at the end of the segment, where they both felt that everyone is benefitting Behar’s comments, be it Angle, The View, or even Fox News and our little site here.

To start, though, they discussed last night’s Daily Show. While many have argued the wisdom of Obama appearing on a comedy show, Hall pointed out that Obama needed “a win” and to be “in a room with a lot of fans” and that that’s just what he got. Smith then played a number of the more contentious moments from the interview and they judged how well the president handled Jon Stewart’s sharper questions.

After that (and a glorious segue featuring a loving shot of our beautifully designed home page), the conversation moved to Behar vs. Angle. Smith reminded viewers that he was actually there for the incident and that Behar wasn’t angry (which was one of Megyn Kelly’s arguments yesterday) but was “laughing like a hyena.” A hyena? If there was ever a statement that would satisfy both Behar fans and haters, it’s the one above.

Smith then wondered “who got to” Behar in causing her to make today’s apology. Perhaps, as Hall alluded to, she realized how much she was helping, not hurting, the woman she was throwing “terms of endearment” at.

Check out the clip from Fox News below.

While Emme’s main concern was the lack of editorial filter that allowed such a hateful post to be put up, Sklar rightfully points out that the biggest problem with the post is its stunning lack of research and facts. That said, they both agree that at the very least, it’s allowed for a much-needed dialogue.

The anger against her has only strengthened now that she’s called Sharron Angle a “bitch” two days in a row. Earlier today, Mediaite’s own Steve Krakauer had the unenviable task of defending Behar to Megyn Kelly on America Live.

Krakauer agreed with Kelly that Behar can say things that Angle can’t because she is a comedian, not a political candidate, and therefore has more leeway. He also made the point of comparing her to Dennis Miller, who frequently gets away with saying some edgy things on Fox (perhaps a better example would have been the folks over at Red Eye).

I spent most of the segment being fascinated by the other guest on the panel, Sonja Eddings Brown of the conservative women’s group The Kitchen Cabinet. While Eddings Brown did make some wise points about Behar helping Angle’s cause (she called the View host “the best player on our team”), she also tried her best to politicize the topic at hand (at one point, Kelly had to point out that liberal women are, in fact, women too) and discuss the rise of conservative woman as a political force. She also took a weird potshot at the National Organization of Women, whom she apparently likes to call the “National Organization of a Few Women.”

Whatever the panel’s disagreements, they all came together in support of Krakauer’s final point; that after Angle wins her race, she should totally go on The View. Absolutely.

“We are in a transition period,” Hall tells Applegate and fellow panelist, civil rights attorney Norman Siegel, “There is no question that the media is changing to be more opinion media.” Siegel offers that the grave mistake on NPR’s part was pulling the trigger too early and hampering free speech on a comment that was, ultimately, a tolerant one: “people have to understand that [this is] what free speech is about… that’s what a free marketplace of ideas is,” and, without it, “in the long run, we all lose.”

Asked about the relative peace between Goldberg and O’Reilly, Hall noted that “the decision by NPR to fire Juan Williams has united a country that was previously divided,” and, as wonderful a service as this is, it’s already starting to seem that the NPR officials “probably regret that they reacted in such a rash, uninformed way.”

Last week, on The View, Behar joked that NY gubernatorial Tea Party candidate Paladino, who had a child out of wedlock (while he was wedlocked to his wife), could win the election “if all his illegitimate children vote.” Oof, Paladino and his people did not like that one. The response from Paladino campaign manager Michael Caputo:

Joy Behar should be absolutely ashamed of herself for referring to Carl’s daughter as illegitimate. She’s a child and does not deserve that kind of treatment from a woman who should know better. That’s catty, it’s pissy and strikes of something that someone would say when suffering from a sudden hot flash. The only person here who’s illegitimate is Joy Behar’s hairstylist. Joy is off Carl Paladino’s Christmas card list.

That was last Monday. And apparently it worked, because Joy Behar proceeded to talk Paladino on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Turns out Joy Behar is a fan of Carl Paladino not being a fan of Joy Behar not being a fan of Carl Paladino. Here she is with Bill Maher last Tuesday, sounding very upset about being left off the Christmas card list:

BEHAR: Now this other guy, Carl Paladino, what do you know about him? He sent some really racist e-mails ahead. He forwarded these hideous, hideous — I read Bob Herbert today. It’s unbelievable stuff.

What do you think — where do they come up with these people? Go ahead.

MAHER: Joy, he was in the construction business. That’s his excuse. ‘I was in the construction business.’

BEHAR: Yes.

MAHER: ‘Of course we’re going to send racist e-mail. As a woman have you ever walked by a construction site? Of course you’re going to be accosted with all sorts of horrible things coming out of the mouths of construction people.’ And his other thing is, ‘Yes — I admit it — bad judgment.’ So here you have a guy running in New York State, which is supposed to be one of the most sophisticated states in the nation saying, “I’m in the construction business and I use bad judgment. Vote for me. These are my qualifications to be the governor of the second largest, most populist state in the country.” It’s just insane.

BEHAR: I mean, you know, I got into a big tiff with him the other day because I said he could if all of his illegitimate children voted for him and I got this really nasty response. This is what &mash; from his people. “That’s catty. It’s pissy and strikes of something that someone would say when suffering from a sudden hot flash. Joy is off Carl Paladino’s Christmas card list.”

Can you believe these idiots are actually turning on me, a comedian, for a comment like that?

MAHER: And to play the hot flash card, Joy.

BEHAR: So wrong.

So wrong, indeed. Meanwhile, it seems that exclusion from the Paladino Christmas card list is the go-to punishment for anti-Paladinites — Caputo also warned Paladino-nemesis Fred Dicker of the New York Post that he, too, was off the list. Naughty! Speaking of, Behar also discussed Paladino with actress Linda Blair, who can be pretty scary in her own right, plus wrestler Mick Foley, who may be an awesome humanitarian but whom you probably don’t want to see angry. Oh, and also with Bravo’s Andy Cohen — who can sic some Real Housewives on you, need I say more — and me. I can be very scary, too. RAWR. Our fun segment from Thursday night’s show below.

But now the background of one of the two bylined co-authors, William Arkin, has come into question.

Dana Priest, the other co-author, has a long background in investigative journalism, but Arkin wrote a blog for the Washington Post which looked into the intelligence community. He’s been described as an “activist” and not a “journalist” and in 2002 made comments that made it sound like he was blaming America for 9/11. More recently in 2007, he was the star of an O’Reilly Factor ambush after he described American soldiers as “mercenaries” and spoke out against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan (watch it here).

But – here’s the big question: does it really matter? Arkin has never hidden his opinions, but at the same time, he knows the material extremely well. Plus, he is just one of the more than dozen contributors to this massive two-year project – one that even its critics believe is more hype than scandal.

This was the topic of a panel discussion I was part of during Megyn Kelly‘s America Live today. I believe the Washington Post reporting is fair and Arkin’s well-known political beliefs don’t change that. Also, the Post has been clear that government agencies saw the reports before they were published, and parts they objected to were removed, eliminating any security threats as well.

What do you think?

Here’s the panel today:

But he didn’t ask Holder about the Black Panther/DOJ case. Should he have?

I was on America Live with Megyn Kelly this afternoon to weigh in. While Schieffer didn’t ask Holder about it – and should have – none of the Sunday shows brought up the topic during any interview, including FOX News Sunday. In fact, as Kelly points out, the only person in the administration who has been asked about the story is Press Secretary Robert Gibbs – because our White House correspondent Tommy Christopher asked him.

Also, Kelly raised the possibility of two options – either Scheiffer “doesn’t care about the story” or CBS agreed to guidelines before the interview. I believe the first one, and a CBS source tells Mediaite he doubts any deal was in place before the interview.

Check it out, and weigh in in the comments – we’ll continue to follow who’s covering the story as more news comes out this week (a letter is supposed to be sent Wednesday of this week to the DOJ from the bipartisan panel reviewing the case);

Using this Michael Triplett Mediaite column, “Givhan Denies Sexism in Scolding Kagan for Not Sitting Like a Lady,” as a jumping off point, Megyn Kelly and Steve Krakauer debated the issue.

I confess I did a mini-squeal in the green room when I saw her onscreen. Why? This is why.
p.p.s. For the record, judges in Canada do not wear wigs.

Specifically what I said was: “You can see where this is going…likely straight to Rush Limbaugh’s radio show.” Turns out I was right.

On his radio show yesterday Rush did indeed mention the story. Not only that he mentioned Mediaite.

During his time in the Senate and while running for president, Obama received a total of $77,051 from the oil giant and is the top recipient of BP PAC and individual money over the past 20 years.” Barack Hussein Obama, mmm, mmm, mmm. And there’s a website out there called Mediaite, and on their posting of this story: “You can see where this is going… likely straight to Rush Limbaugh’s radio show!” I didn’t make it the lead ’cause I didn’t want these guys to be a hundred percent correct. [Emphasis mine.]

Yes, well, we all have our 100% days (and not). Regardless: Hi Rush! Thanks for reading. Audio below.

There was revelation (Oprah’s mom won’t tell her who her biological father is), skepticism (while Kelley concluded reluctantly that there was no evidence to support the claim that Oprah and BFF Gayle King were secret lesbian lovebirds, Musto still couldn’t quite let go), shock (onetime paramour John Tesh fled from Oprah’s side in the middle of the night), and more shock (Oprah once ate two pecan pies in one sitting?). Well, I can sorta see how that could happen if you were hungry and the pies were there and you were there and the pies were good and no one else was there and you were still hungry or if not hungry exactly you didn’t really want to stop eating and anyway why should you with no one there to see and judge and steal your pie. Oh, stop judging. Pie is delicious.

Or something. Please note that we are two Canadians. Then we discussed whether the National Enquirer ought to have gotten the Pulitzer Prize for breaking the John Edwards scandal. It was a very fun segment, probably a lot more fun than listening to the music of John Tesh.

Age: 25

Hometown: Westfield, NJ

Educational background (including major): Syracuse University, Broadcast Journalism major

Personal journalistic hero/model/inspiration: Woodward and Bernstein? But really, Cal Ripken Jr.

Current blog traffic (and, rate of traffic increase, if it applies): Approximately one million unique visitors and more than four million page views per month. (Ed: Steve cited Feb numbers here; our March numbers improved on this rather significantly.)

Number of posts a week: 35-40

Biggest scoop/hit (describe, including measure of impact): We were the first blog to notice and write about the NBC Cafeteria Black History Month “fried chicken” menu. The post translated to a lot of page views, but bigger was the impact – that night Wanda Sykes was joking about it on Jay Leno, and it was covered throughout TV news. (See here.)

Personal favorite line/phrase in any recent post of yours: Headline to the John Mayer/Playboy interview post: “John Mayer’s Penis Is A Racist Wonderland”

Biggest rival in blog world: Oh we’re all about the love at Mediaite! Well we enjoy some friendly competition with Gawker, the Huffington Post and more.

First blog other than your own you check every morning (feel free to elaborate): Well of course there’s the rest of the Abrams Media family – Geekosystem, Styleite (launching Monday!) – and right now, keeping an eye on Twitter is the best way to stay up on the day’s biggest stories.

Favorite sparring partner (subject you’ve written about and gotten into a tangle with; please describe): For whatever reason, MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann has taken to bashing Mediaite a few times on his prime time show. We can take it though. (See here and here.)

How do you stay sane/decompress after 12/16/whatever-hour days (or whatever) staring at a computer: Although I write about TV for a living, I wish I could say I did something other than watch TV to decompress. Instead, there’s a lot of bad TV I watch (and occasionally write about) like Jersey Shore and Real World, go to the gym, and grab the occasional drink or six.

Ultimate career goal: To be the next Conan O’Brien (so…unemployed?). No, I would love to have a role in getting young people excited about news, politics and current events.

Ali very kindly pointed out that I was a hardy Canadian — like him! — and we all scoffed at weather wimps. I also got to give a shout-out to Geekosystem, Mediaite’s sister site. Aw. Here’s the video:

Here was my take on Google Buzz:

SKLAR: It’s a little early to know whether this is just another thing that we don’t need or the thing we didn’t know we needed. At first I found it annoying and wondered what the use was, but I admit I’ve started finding it useful. There are a lot of sharing features. People already sharing links, stuff coming in from their RSS via Google Reader. You can integrate your Twitter stream, which is a point that Google actually made in their press conference. You can geotag stuff, so where you post from can be visible…I mean there a lot of possibilities. And I think what will be really interesting is when they open up the API, which they are planning to do by May, according to Geekosystem, which is where I get my geek information from, it’s Mediaite’s sister site. The said they’re going to open up the API by may so that other developers can come in and use the service to create their own private application.

VELSHI: Which has been a big success for Facebook.

Quest made the point that each of these various web apps had begun with “a unique selling point, and then the others decided they had to steal their clones” — but then boggled my mind by asking me a question that I thought we were done with ages ago:

QUEST: What I question and I question Rachel is, there was one phrase that people always talk about never use with social media, what is the social usefulness.

SKLAR: Are you serious? It’s incredibly useful for exchanging information and seeing trends. Just for, frankly, for being social. It’s an incredibly useful system of communication. It’s changing everything. That’s the short answer!

QUEST: I can see that. I Twitter and I love to Twitter. I can understand it with a small group of friends, but do you always want to know who you went to school with and what they’re doing now? Do you really care?

SKLAR: It’s all information. Like I always like to say, it’s just a platform and it’s what you do with that platform. It’s not just for what I had for lunch. It’s, “This is an interesting article,” “You were talking about this yesterday and here is an update,” “These are photos you might find interesting,” “This event happened, did anybody else experience it?” It’s crowdsourcing. It’s not just one way or two way communication, it’s all way communication.

Richard Quest is a smart guy who clearly gets it, which is why I was so flabbergasted at the question. There is just no excuse for questioning the value of social media because you don’t care what someone had for lunch anymore. Seriously. We’ve now been through Iran, Motrin Moms, Miracle on the Hudson and Tiger Woods to name just a few examples off the top of my head where social media played a major role in information-sharing, media coverage and, in certain cases, decisions made as a direct result. No one questions the use of paper because sometimes people print idiotic things. It’s enough already. p.s. Richard, I just had soup for lunch. Yum!

With The Wrap’s Ray Richmond and the Baltimore Sun‘s David Zurawik.

From the transcript:

SKLAR: I would hardly call Jay Leno naive. He certainly knew — he had the biggest range of options of anyone here. He had five years to figure out what he wanted to do. What he decided to do was stay at NBC while Conan took over and have a sort of shadow government set up and wait in the wings until who knows what happened. And in the meantime, he also negotiated a bigger poison pill penalty for his own cancellation. So, I wouldn’t call…

KURTZ: And by the way, Conan O’Brien had a poison pill penalty. If he was taken off “The Tonight Show,” he had to be paid $45 million.

SKLAR: The reason he had the poison pill penalty — the reason he had that penalty was to ensure that NBC would not do this. The whole reason he had that was to give Conan comfort that NBC would actually go through with their promise because NBC wanted to keep Conan from exploring his own range of options.

KURTZ: Right.

SKLAR: So that’s the reason for Conan’s poison pill.

Joy spoke first with Bill Carter of the New York Times, pretty much the go-to expert on all things late night thanks to his seminal — and still relevant! — book The Late Shift. Following Carter’s comments (he thinks NBC and Leno will be just fine, by the way), Joy discussed the brou-ha-ha with her panel, which consisted of me, Rachelle Carson of “Living With Ed” (her show with husband Ed Begley) and comedian-actor-musician-pop-culture-expert Hal Sparks, who made me crack up on the air with a lube joke. Well done, Hal. Lube jokes are never rendered obsolete by breaking news stories.

p.s. We also talk about Tiger. That’s where the lube comes in.

Luckily, it wasn’t “The List U Don’t Want To Be On” (Danny Glover got that honor on show #1). Instead, it was about the Conan/Leno late night story.

Sanchez explained the “list” concept in <a href="http://ricksanchez.blogs.cnn.com/2010/01/16/so-what-is-ricks-list/"target="_blank">an introduction post on his blog:

What “Rick’s List” does is give us the opportunity to compartmentalize stories and people. My Twitter page, twitter.com/ricksanchezcnn, gives you access to the biggest stories of the day and the relevant, newsworthy tweets or comments related to those stories. You can read the list for yourself or watch each day as I choose the comments that stand out. It may be the White House clarifying a quote, a senator criticizing a policy decision, a celebrity making a shocking admission, or even a Twitpic showing the first visuals of a breaking news story as it happens.

The list that Sanchez grabbed from today is <a href="http://twitter.com/ricksanchezcnn/tv"target="_blank">his TV list – which <a href="http://www.twitter.com/rachelsklar"target="_blank">Rachel Sklar and I are part of. “These guys in the entertainment business are wanting us to know exactly what’s going on with these wars,” said Sanchez during the show.

There were many smart people who gazed into the crystal ball a few years back and not only saw nothing, but doubled down on the Titanic (R.I.P. Portfolio). Smarter people, however, looked around at what was happening and bet on the future. This is the only model that will work in 2010 – because the future is here. The 2008 election was a giant distraction (did anything else happen that year?) but in 2009 all sorts of trends emerged, and diverged and/or converged. (Clearly, we’re on the verge.) Anyhow, it was with all of the above in mind that I made a few predictions about the New Yecade* for The Daily Beast today.

Check out what I have to say about Mash-Up Media, The Power of Niche, Undernews 2.0, and my personal favorite, To Hell With SEO! (yes yes this and this and this, but what SEO-slave puts “Yecade” in a headline?). Plus thoughts on bylines, brands and Boxee. Also, I am deadly serious about my last one, Grownups, You Need the Kids… and Kids, You Need the Grownups, which I’ve excerpted in part:

It’s true, and I’m tired of your bickering. Grownups, you’ve been in this business for decades, but the ground is shifting under your feet and if you don’t grab on to some smart 22-year-old, you’re screwed. Why? Because that 22-year-old grew up on the Internet while you were spending all your time working in some other quaint old-timey medium. So stop pulling rank and just say, “help me.” They will. And to you young punks who think you run this world—there actually are rules in this Wild West. Quaint old-fashioned conventions like transparency, attribution, confirmation, and accountability will matter just as much in 2010, maybe more now that the Internet is multiplying around us like Mickey’s broom in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. And if you don’t get that reference, ask a grownup.

And then…I picked a side. So: am I a kid or a grownup? It’s a New Yecade – I can be anything I want. I just gotta be careful of how I use that hat. See below.

Part I:
Here we talk about the White House vs. Fox battle royale from a few weeks back, whether it was acceptable for Glenn Beck to call President Obama a racist, what happened to Van Jones, and whether Fox News is biased in their coverage (I said yes it was, citing their Tea Party coverage as an example).

Part II:
Here we talk about a favorite topic of mine, women in media and politics, and I revisit my coverage of Hillary Clinton from early and mid 2008, and how it took a while before people in media acknowledged that yes, fine, there were aspects of her coverage that were sexist (“When I hear her voice I cross my legs involuntarily” “She reminds me of a first wife in probate court” etc.)

Here we discussed the Stupak Amendment and how the Health Care Debate became The Abortion Debate. I contend that abortion=health care, based on it being, you know, a surgical procedure. Menin asked me if I would have voted no on the whole health care bill over it, which was a tough question (and I am still not sure what I would have done, there were so many factors at play). I also call out Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga.) for his ridiculous and insulting “I object” stunt. Oh and I use the phrase “Abortion Candy Store.”

Part IV:
Rachel Maddow, Jane Velez-Mitchell, (possibly/presumably) Anderson Cooper: Does it matter if a TV host is gay? Are we past it yet? And, what standard are they being held to? We also talk about the nexus of comedy, media and politics and how to balance the fun stuff/pageviews (cough Megan Fox) with the serious and important stuff (what I call peas vs. ice cream).

How nice of Julie and her team to welcome me for such a great interview. Julie Menin’s Give and Take airs on WNBC’s new 24-hour news channel, New York Nonstop on Sundays at 7pm Eastern.
