We talked to Ratigan on Mediaite Office Hours last week about the culpability of the press, the airplane/peanuts analogy and more.

Ratigan said the media was “hugely, tremendously, unbelievably” culpable in allowing the politicians from both sides to continue the direction of the country. “The media is along the project because it’s profitable,” he told us. “As long as I’m playing horse race, who’s up who’s down…How does TV work? I get a big crowd to look at it, I sell ads against that crowd, I get rich – the media company, the host, whatever. The easiest way to draw the crowd is with cheap entertainment: horse racing, screwing off.”

Ratigan also explained this analogy regarding Tuesday’s election, which saw the Republicans take power in the House: “Imagine you’ve got an airplane that’s kind of out of control and everyone on the airplane is arguing about the peanuts.” He expanded on this throughout the interview.

One more (uncensored) note from Ratigan on the current election system:

You know that if you spend a lot of money and you don’t get much, that you’ve got a fucked up system…When you look at this midterm election, to me, was a reflection that this political system, that’s supposed to engage the voter, is so corrupt and so rigged with both gerrymandering, high tech gerrymandering, and redistricting and a primary system that bastardizes the process.

Not exactly a cheery outlook, but certainly something you don’t hear everyday from the typical cablers. But it was sweet because Glenn Beck stopped by to say goodbye. Really!

Since we launched Mediaite, the person we’ve arguably written about the most is Glenn Beck. Sometimes it’s positive, sometimes it’s negative… we even started BeckCrunch.com!

As Glynnis makes her way to her next job, we asked Glenn to tape a goodbye message to her. “Because she’s written some halfway decent or accurate stories about me, I would assume she’s either going to prison or she’s finally getting that medical treatment she’s needed for oh so very long,” said Beck. “Glynnis – we’ll miss you.”

We all will.

We talked to CNN’s Candy Crowley on Mediaite Office Hours yesterday about this, the magnitude of the Nevada Senate race and more.

“Anything that has tea party associated with it is going to be analyzed over and over again,” said Crowley of the Nevada Senate race. “So yes, this looks to be the place where they could make the biggest pick-up. Although, I would argue Alaska is pretty huge too.”

As for the candidates avoiding the press, Crowley said this is nothing new:

Look we see that with President Obama. That there are friendlier places to go than the quote ‘mainstream media’ so they get to pick and choice, because everybody’s had a mea culpa at this point, and it is not all that unusual that people who are new to this are saying, ‘no we’re not going to talk to the media.’

As for the right – “the Tea Party in particular, Republicans in general, tend to think the media swings way left, and they tend not to want to go into that kind of forum, so they now have friendlier forums they can go to,” said Crowley.

She also talked about CNN’s election night plans – and the Matrix! – and that esoteric topic of ‘Will Sarah Palin run in 2012.’ Check out the full interview below:

We talked to Kotb on Office Hours this week about beating cancer, working with Kathie Lee Gifford and more.

“She’s the gift that keeps giving,” said Kotb of her co-host, describing it like you “swallowed a truth pill and just started blurting out what you thought.” The relationship has “developed over time,” but the more she’s gotten to know her “the more you like” her.

Kotb described her career moving from local market to local market, and eventually reporting for NBC News from dangerous war zones. But perhaps her biggest battle was with cancer in 2007. She told a story of a fan she met on the plane who gave her memorable advice. “Don’t hog your journey, it’s not just for you,” he told her. “Think of how many people you could have helped.”

And so she has, including writing this book. She also developed a mentality that helped her get ahead at work – “you can’t scare me.” With that new confidence, she put her name into the hat to land the 4th hour of Today, and the rest is history. “If I hadn’t had gotten sick with cancer I don’t think I would have been working on the show,” she said.

Earlier this week we went to her book party at the NYC townhouse of Donny Deutsch (here’s a pic of the mini-cocktails – all the great food and drinks were from Callahan Catering). In attendance were Matt Lauer, Al Roker, Gifford and her husband Frank Gifford and Jeff Zucker, among others. Zucker is mentioned in the book as someone who was a big proponent of Kotb and the fourth hour of Today – and in her speech Monday night, she joked about writing the book before the show had a chance to be canceled. With Zucker making an exit soon, we asked if she really thought the show could be too.

She says the show is “safe.” “We have strong numbers, we feel good about it,” she said. “Jeff has been a cheerleader for us, which feels great.”

We also asked her about the SNL portrayals of her and her show – and the frequency with which cast members playing her are replaced. “I am getting a little bit of a complex,” she said. “When we first saw the SNL skits I was curious about who was faxing our exact scripts from our show to SNL.”

Schulz has started a campaign to date Kotb – and we asked the Today host what she thinks. Then Bill called in to respond.

“Well I might have to consider it,” said Kotb. “I’ll have to see. I’ve never seen him. I saw the cartoon face he has on his Twitter page, does he look like that?”

With the seed planted, Schulz called in next. “You guys are the best wingmen in the history of wingmen,” he told Mediaite. “My crush on her, which I didn’t think was possible, has grown exponentially, as have other things, because she’s really cute.”

Schulz also explained the backstory:

This whole thing just started because I have way too much time on my hands and I was watching the show and I realized that Kathie Lee was always harping on Hoda’s singlehood. And she’s sort of relentless about it. It wasn’t necessarily mean-spirited but it was bothering me. And I thought she needed a partner in this crazy game we call life. And I would like to be that.

Schulz identified height difference as a potential barrier, although drinking ability (as displayed on the fourth hour of Today) is a plus.

What happens next? We’ll keep you updated – but a date filmed by Today show and Red Eye crews sounds like it should really happen. Meanwhile, it continues playing out on Twitter.

According to his new book, American Freak Show, Willie Geist found a lot of them: Tiger Woods, Sarah Palin, Levi Johnston, Blago, Lindsay Lohan and many more.

We talked to Geist about his new book last week during Office Hours. The book kicks off with the text for the 2013 Inaugural Address Sarah Palin will make after she is elected President (it takes place at a WWE event – no word if Linda McMahon is in attendance):

Hey Katie Couric, you wanted to know what I read? Well I’m President now, so look real close here, see if you can read this, biaaaaaatch! (thrust middle finger in the air to wild cheers) The Mama Grizzly is President!

That’s just a portion of it, but gives you an idea what to expect from the book. And in case you were worried it wasn’t fair and balanced, there is a biting chapter involving an email exchange between Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton when she was on the campaign trail in 2008. Let’s just say it doesn’t exactly paint a beautiful image of their marriage.

Then there was a chapter based on the final episode of a hypothetical season of The Bachelorette. The final two contestants? Mark Sanford…and Eliot Spitzer. “This was well before he launched into his cable news career,” Geist told us on Office Hours. “It’s not a terribly flattering chapter.”

Geist said this thought crossed his mind as the book was already done and Spitzer was crossing over to cable news:

Is Eliot Spitzer going to MSNBC, is he going to CNN? I have nothing against him personally I’m merely writing about some things that happened in the public sphere. But in the back of my mind I’m going, ‘Dear God, don’t let him go to MSNBC!’ I don’t know how I’m going to explain this one. So I’m happy on many levels that Eliot Spitzer ended up at CNN. I wish him nothing but the best.

As for how he thought Parker Spitzer went last week, Geist is holding off judgment. “Working in TV, I’m terribly sensitive to people who are doing their show for the first time,” he said.

But Van Susteren also revealed how she helped give new CNN host Eliot Spitzer his start on TV.

Before Van Susteren began her now nine-year career at Fox News, she spent almost as much time at CNN. And as she watched Parker Spitzer this week, she recalled how she first met Spitzer.

I know Eliot because Eliot got his start on TV about 1995, 1996. Before he was state attorney general, he used to be a frequent guest on CNN’s Burden Of Proof as a former federal prosecutor. And of course, I was one of the co-hosts. So I’ve known Eliot for almost 15-20 years.

Van Susteren also is familiar with Kathleen Parker, who she spent time with while traveling around the Middle East with then First Lady Laura Bush. As for a review, “In cable news a show doesn’t develop its identity, in terms of what its going to be, probably three for five six months, because it really is a work in progress…While I like them very much, I certainly hope that they never beat us.”

Of CNN as a whole, Van Susteren said, “They’re desperate. They’re in constant flux.”

Van Susteren also talked about her two recent interviews with Allred. “The process should be fair,” she said of the California race. “There shouldn’t be some of this gamesmanship, and Gloria is inserting herself into it, in a very volatile issue having to do with the Latino vote.”

As for politics, we asked Greta about Palin. “I think the media makes a big mistake taking a swipe at Sarah Palin,” she said, while calling her “as qualified as any other potential candidate I’ve seen.”

Finally, Joe Biden got a shout-out as well. “The man is experienced, and he certainly is capable of doing the job,” said Van Susteren.

But we also asked for his take on ABC’s hiring of his colleague Christiane Amanpour for the This Week job, and while he wished her luck, he raised some concerns others have voiced recently.

ABC News staffers have talked anonymously about their concerns over the hiring, and columnists like Tom Shales have aggressively disagreed with the choice.

King’s comments were surprising for how candid he was in his assessment. While calling her a friend and colleague, he said “I wish her the best.” But:

There are a lot of questions. Christiane does not have a lot of experience covering American politics and so how does she fit in on ABC on Sunday morning? I’ll leave that to them to figure out. It is an interesting pick, it is an unorthodox choice, I think that’s just self-evident…I’ll watch how it plays out with everyone else.

More: “It’s an interesting choice for them, they really decided to go in a new direction. We’ll see how it plays out. And I would tell everybody out there, put her on your DVR and watch Candy Crowley on State of the Union.”

Raising the idea that Amanpour “does not have a lot of experience covering American politics,” is not necessarily a new storyline, but it certainly seems to show a sense by a former Sunday morning host that Amanpour can not handle the current format of This Week (as a D.C./political-focused show). That may not come into play – there could be a total revamp with an international focus. But hearing King’s take highlights the shock (and a bit of doubt) many in the industry have over the choice, even as they love Amanpour and respect her work.

We also asked King about ratings for the show, and he pointed to three weeks or three months down the road before he’d really pay attention to what they say. But after one week – TVNewser has a look at where he stands: The first week is down from the same week last year (when Lou Dobbs was host) but up from the week prior when Wolf Blitzer was anchor.

She’s also a fellow University of Rhode Island graduate, and I didn’t know that when I went to the University of Rhode Island. I met Christiane when I worked for the Associated Press sand she worked for CNN back in the very first Persian Gulf War. We were both over in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, for several, many months during the war back then. She’s a friend as well as a colleague, soon to be former colleague. I wish her the best. There are a lot of questions. Christiane does not have a lot of experience covering American politics and so how does she fit in on ABC on Sunday morning? I’ll leave that to them to figure out. It is an interesting pick, it is an unorthodox choice, I think that’s just self-evident. That’s not any special analysis from John King. I’ll watch how it plays out with everyone else. Shes a friend, a dear friend, I wish her the best, and I have no bad feelings toward ABC. It’s an interesting choice for them, they really decided to go in a new direction. We’ll see how it plays out. And I would tell everybody out there, put her on your DVR and watch Candy Crowley on State of the Union.
