Meryl! Clooney! Oprah! Why The Best Actor and Actress Tributes Is A Great New Oscar Tradition

Screen shot 2010-03-08 at 11.26.29 AM video

Rather than re-showing clips that we’d already seen, each nominee was fêted by a special colleague, speaking effusively of his or her talent and ability and, in the case of Helen Mirren, overwhelming hotness. If you’re the type of person who likes wedding speeches (and I do), chances are you loved it (and I did).

While our counterparts at Mediaite have been dutifully liveblogging every last moment of this year’s 82nd Annual Academy Awards, we at Styleite gave up before the show even started; we were in it for the red carpet, clearly. Thankfully, this year’s pre-show fashion fest served up no shortage of sartorial sins, rewarding risks, and, predictably, the usual snoozefest offenders.

Golden Globes 2010: The Highlights

Picture 2

Last night’s 67th annual Golden Globe awards marked the official start to this year’s awards season and also provided the first clue as to what we can expect at the Oscars (hint: longevity. Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges, and James Cameron all picked up awards last night). As usual the night provided its fair share of glittering stars, fashions hits and fashion ‘what was your stylist thinking’, teary speeches, funny speeches, good jokes, and a fantastic Martin Scorsese retrospective. You can read and watch all of Mediaite’s coverage here and here.

Meryl Streep Wins Golden Globe For Julie And Julia

Picture 1 video

Is it possible to ever get tired of Meryl Streep? Apparently not. Streep beat out herself and this year to nab the Golden Globe for ‘Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy Or Musical’ for her role as Julia Child in the movie Julie and Julia. Streep, who always somehow manages [...]

Kennedy Center Honors: Jon Stewart Honors The Boss; Plus De Niro, Mel, Obama & More (VIDEO)

Last night CBS broadcast this year’s Kennedy Center Honors, held earlier this month, and it was a pretty lovely affair as Mel Brooks, Robert DeNiro, Bruce Springsteen, Dave Brubeck and Grace Bumbry were honored for their incredible contributions to arts and culture. It was an exceptionally star-studded affair, too — not only on stage but [...]

George Stephanopoulos’ GMA Growing Pains, Part One

George Stephanopoulos has been the anchor of a network morning show for a little more than a week now, and he’s settling into his new role.

But inevitably, there will be growing pains. Like today, when he named the wrong celebrity who’s engaged to Meryl Streep‘s daughter.

Dowd On Wintour: What A Difference Three Years Makes

Three years ago Maureen Dowd wrote a much talked about, much passed around column defending Anna Wintour and Meryl Streep‘s portrayal of her in the just-released Devil Wears Prada. The column was sharp, incisive, full of wit, and relevant. In short: Dowd at her best. In short, everything this past Sunday’s column about Wintour’s portrayal in the upcoming documentary was not.

5QQ – Nora Ephron

Nora Ephron is what’s known in the business as a quadruple threat: writer, director, blogger and chef. Somehow she manages to pull all of those together in her latest film, Julie & Julia —which she directed and for which she wrote the screenplay, about a cook, a blogger, and blogging about cooking. Okay that’s putting [...]
