NYT Won’t Foot Bill For Staffers’ Haiti Donations

new-york-times-building

How we donate now! Oy. While the country is reaching into their pockets (and cell phones) and donating in record amounts to the Haiti relief effort the New York Times sent out this awkward email yesterday informing its staff it would not be ponying up for their generosity.

Is The World Growing Tired Of Reading About Sarah Palin?

After taking the publishing world by storm with her memoir Going Rogue it may be the book industry has gone a bit sour on Sarah Palin. Apparently a former NBC reporter who was signed to Wiley to pen a book about Palin’s “rise to national prominence as the Republican vice presidential nominee this year, and her subsequent fall from grace” has had his project canceled. Is Palin no longer marketable?

Murdoch And Zuckerman Prefer To Bury Their Future Instead Of The Hatchet

new-york-post-daily-news

The media establishment in New York may frequently feel that the dismantling of their industry has reached what could be described as biblical proportions of the “dogs and cats living together” type. Be that as it may, it apparently is not yet bad enough for the New York Post and the New York Daily News to consider “printing together,” despite the fact such an arrangement would feasibly be to their mutual benefit.

Poll: Which Is The Top Site of 2009?

poll

Last week, Mediaite asked you who was the top online editor of 2009. This time around, we’re recognizing sites which are too vast and ambitious in scope to describe in terms of the work of just one editor. You know the drill, loyal, smart, and attractive readers: below is a list of our nominees for the top site of 2009, including The Business Insider, Ars Technica, and Talking Points Memo. Vote for your favorite, or leave any deserving candidates you think we left out in the comments:

NYT Buyouts Begin, The List Thus Far

The 100 buyouts at the New York Times, announced earlier last month, have begun. Keith Kelly reported the other day that 50 unionized newsroom employees would be taking buyouts and the names have been trickling out since yesterday. Here’s a look at the list thus far.

Panic In D.C.! Bloggers Officially Invited To Cover The President

Just this week the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA), which runs the White House pool has started letting Talking Points Memo, Salon, and the HuffPo in to share the pool duty. A number of establishment people are up in arms about “blurring the line between news and punditry even further.” Should we be worried the inmates are taking over the (clubby) asylum?

The Andrew Sullivan, Sarah Palin, Birther Love Triangle Continues

There has been no love lost between Andrew Sullivan and Sarah Palin to put it mildly. Sullivan has over the last year or so, appeared to lead the so-called Trig-birther charge, calling numerous times for Palin to produce evidence that Trig is actually her son. And today he responds to criticisms aimed at him in Palin’s new memoir Going Rogue.

After “Amicable” $8 Million Split With CNN, What’s Next For Lou Dobbs?

Almost a week after the fact, lots of fascinating details are starting to trickle in about Lou Dobbs‘ departure from CNN. Why did he announce his resignation on Wednesday instead of the more customary Friday? (Bad luck to bow on Friday the 13th.) What sort of severance did he get? (For the headline-impaired among you, that would be $8 million.) The big question: is Dobbs planning on going into politics?

Progressive Blog Jumps Into WH Press Pool, Conservatives Get Splashed

Talking Points Memo — the award-winning political blog with a knack for investigative reporting — is the latest news outlet to join the White House press pool. But some conservatives are upset that a progressive blog like TPM would get that kind of access, especially after the recent battle between Fox News and the White House. “Would anyone seriously suggest that TPM, the Huffington Post and Salon are more objective than Fox News?”

Would Rachel Maddow Be A Good Senator?

video/poll

Hat tip to Politico’s Michael Calderone for digging through the web archives for this Sunday’s much talked-about Meet The Press to find this gem: Mike Murphy and Rachel Maddow going off about a prospective Maddow For Senate campaign.

A poll: do you think Maddow would make a good Senator?

‘Bite Me Jew Boy’ Email Starts War of Words Between NBC and Right-Wing Think Tank

Americans for Limited Government and NBC News have found themselves in a little he said–she said over an email from Dateline producer Jane Stone in response to some ALG media outreach. Do accusations that Stone wrote a message reading ‘Bite me Jew Boy’ from her Blackberry hold water? Or is ALG just desperate for buzz?

Qaddafi/Gadhafi/Gaddafi/Qadhafi Brings His Stand Up Show To The UN: The View From Twitter

Muammar el-Qaddafi/Gadhafi/Gaddafi/Qadhafi addressed the UN today, and his speech was a doozy. And at 90 minutes long perhaps best viewed from Twitter, which courtesy of some well-established media types was distilled it down to its very best parts…with one or two embellishments. It makes for a great read.

Glenn Beck Is The New Rush Limbaugh And Its Effect On America

It’s the question on the minds of many, and it’s certainly worth asking. Whether or not it’s good for America is only an afterthought, but first, the real issue: Is Glenn Beck the new Rush Limbaugh? Politico’s Michael Calderone makes the case in “Glenn Beck vs. Rush Limbaugh” and Time plays up the parallels.

Will A Twitter Report Of Obama Calling Kanye A ‘Jackass’ OTR Ruin Twitter?

President Obama had an outburst last night! Sort of. Alas, it was less Kanye-style than actually about Kanye West — the President was quoted on Twitter referring to him as a “jackass” — but it’s still a headline dominator this morning. Also, it was supposed to be off the record. However, thanks to the beauty of Twitter we all get to enjoy the unedited Obama. But will this mark the end of unedited Twittering for jounos everywhere?

Out with the Old, In with the New: Everyone’s a Photojournalist in DC These Days

This week Politico filed two stories about photojournalists in the nation’s capital that provided (yet another) moment to see how photojournalism has evolved over the last two decades: the retirement of Pulitzer-winning AP veteran Ron Edmonds; and the rising stock of a Hill press assistant-turned-photojournalista Charlotte Sellmyer.
